* this thread has been approved by BubHub administration*

I work for the GTAV (Geography Teachers Association of Victoria)

One of our associates has returned from a teaching stint in Fiji.

Many of the women in the village where she taught suffer from a fungal dermatitis.

We are seeking donations of second hand bra's until the end of November.

All sizes, all colors, all shapes, from underwire or crop top to maternity - just in a usable condition.

They can be sent to;

Attn: Kate/Libby
GTAV
PO Box 2066
Camberwell Vic 3124

Thankyou very much for any assistance.

Please note; please do NOT send any money - we are not registered to receive any cash donations.

I have some I could send. Mine would be particularly beneficial on account of if they were strung between two trees they could also be used as hammocks! :o:laughing:

I could probably equip a whole village what with the size 12, size 14, size 16 AND size 18 bras I have packed away in various boxes. As if I'll ever fit into the smaller ones ever again :p

Mid November really, we need to get them boxed ready for shipment - so end of next week is fine.

I figure women world wide enjoy pretty things , so a few frills and a bit of lace n satin is nice

Send it anyhow, they'll all be sorted before they're shipped, and there's a lovely much older lady at work who's adding a stitch or two here n there ;)

Hi, I've gathered about 12 bras between my mum and myself and I've got my sister sorting out hers today. Just wondering, why exactly do they need them?

I mean, is it because they've lost everything in the recent disaster or is it something to do with the fungal condition mentioned? I'm a bit confused - but more than happy to help! Just wanted to clarify the reason behind the donations because I'm about to send round an internal email here at work to drum up some more support :)

Thanks,
Emily

It's to do with a fungal infection.

The people in the village are quite poor and bra's are seen as a luxury item.

As the teacher is a women - we also see it as a way to support the women (no pun intended :p), but it is driven by the health issue that these women face.

Thankyou very much.

Ah, ok. I think I get it. So they have (presumably) itchy, flakey skin on their chest, exacebated by the heat, sweating etc and wearing a bra keeps the skin from touching and making the condition worse? Does that sound right?

Just wanted to make sure I have all the facts because I work in women's health and I just know someone is going to ask me for all the background info - my co-workers are a curious bunch!

Thanks WorkingClassMum

so far as I understand - it's more under the breast and upto the armpit :o - I didn't ask for too many details.

Also, if the women have ever have a bra - it's generally only ever one at a time - the bra just gets worn and worn, or it's only ever worn when the get dressed up for best wear.

Libby says the best treatment method so far seems to be to encourage the wearing of bra's, but their poverty means that it's just not that simple.

Ok, that makes sense. Didn't mean to make you uncomfortable by going into all the gory details - but I was genuinely interested and I'm sure my co-workers will be!

Thanks again :)
