View Full Version : day light savings
just woundering how mums and dads in nws would feel about daylight savings starting 4wks earlier. we all know how hard it can be getting little ones of to bed when its not dark.
I loooooooooooooove Daylight Savings.
We have blinds and curtains, so we'll cope. Or we will just go to bed later and get up later.

Why are they bringing it forward? I haven't heard of that. I hate daylight savings, it's nothing but a pain in the ***. If people want to have an extra hour of daylight, they can get out of bed an hour early and let the rest of us sleep.
It stuffs up my kids sleeping patterns and by the time it's time to change the clocks again, they have only just adjusted.
Not to mention that it is already cold enough in the mornings when it starts in October, now they want us to start 4wks early?? Come on!!! Where I live, it doesn't start to warm up until November.

I love daylight savings.:smiliedance: Extend it please.... I love longer days!! That's one thing I disliked in Queensland - no daylight savings.

It's funny how the cows in NSW, Vic, Tas, NZ and the UK seem to cope. ;)
I like having it light for later, but it really does throw myself, DH and the kids out of whack, you end up staying up later because its light for longer, but then still have to get up at the same time for kids school, work etc. So all in all, no I dont really like it, I dont think a bit of extra light at the end of each day really compensates for everything else, and bringing it forward 4 weeks is even worse!

I love love love daylight savings - I think it should be all year round!!!
We do most of our partying in the evenings and it is much nicer to do it in natural light!!
I don't have any trouble with the girls - we do the same routine at the same time and only have issues for the first week or so until we all get used to it.

OH! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE daylight savings!!!!! I miss it soooooooooo much!!!!!
I can't wait until we can finally get it up here in QLD.
I'd be all for it starting 4 weeks earlier too.
I can't stand being woken up at 4.30 am when it's full daylight & then it being dark at 7.30pm. Seems silly to me!
I grew up both in southern Aust & in the USA, always had daylight savings. It just seems like summer to me having those evening BBQs when the suns still out. I miss that.
I was living in Sydney in 2000 when they brought daylight savings forward for the Olympics & it was the best summer ever!! I remember saying then that they should permanently have daylight savings starting in Sept.

how does daylight savings affect cows ? anyone know?
FourAngelKisses
15-07-2006, 12:45
It doesn't affect them at all.....though they would tend to head to the milking shed an hour early.

how does daylight savings affect cows ? anyone know?
I think it affects the farmers more than the cows. Something about having to get up earlier to milk them??? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, its the farmers it affects. Cows can't read the time so they just head off at the usual time!
Poor old cow cocky gets up an hour earlier according to the clock, but its actually the same time he has always got up.

The argument the Qld farmers have always used is that is the cows who get confused with the result that it affects milk production!!!!
Its odd how so many other cows in other countries manage!!:detective:
I suspect the farmers think we will fall for that, when in truth its them that don't like it.

in the paper it said the only reason it wasnt starting this yr in vic was coz it would cost too much to re-print transport timetables and airline timetables/tickets etc..

I love daylight savings!
I gets dark here so early without it!!!!
We will have to get block out curtains for Olivers room though. Because he knows its BED TIME when its dark outside and quiet(er) in the house. During the day the blinds are open, and its noisy, so we definately need to have the room dark or it wont work!
Nah, we Qld'ers just dont want to replace our curtains cos they will fade if we have daylight savings
(BTW, I AM joking! :D )

we dont even get daylight savings over here at all:banghead:
i grew up in sydney with daylight savings so it was kind of weird to move here at the age of 12 and not have it anymore......
id love it if we had it here:rolleyes:

It's much better for washing. Now I bring my washing in and it's still wet.

Yeah, but that's because it's winter and it's not as hot outside.

 Really?
In summer the washing still dries if you hang it out a bit later.
No need for sarcasm.
Sorry, but as a North Qlder (sunny Townsville) I am glad we don't have it, there is more than enough sun up here in summer! (it's still light at 7:30pm as it is! and being so hot, the only time the temp drops is when the sun goes down)
FourAngelKisses

Sorry, I was joking not being sarcastic.
I hang mine out at night and bring it in at night so that I don't have to wrestle a spinning clothesline in hot weather while trying to swat flies at the same time.
I agree Kelli, even down here in NSW, there is still plenty of light at around 7:30, we don't need more. Makes it too hard to get the kids to go to bed at 8 when the sun is blaring through their curtains....which are blockout ones.
I thought people would know what I was talking about because we're talking about how long it stays sunny for not how hot it is.
Some say that evil spirits get into your washing if you hang it out at night coz that's when they come out and fly around.
Spooky and silly.
But I still haven't done it since.

Convincing my five year old to go to bed when the sun is still shining....:banghead: (...but mum the suns still up!)

Lol... I heard (from here, and I PM'd her about it and she never got back to me) that it can cause something bad to do with your bones...
I don't hang it out at night because I get paranoid about people stealing them, or spiders and things crawling in them (which can happen during the day, but shh!).
Not to mention the bat sh*t!!! LOL

DS2 goes to bed at 6:30, which means in summer, he will be going to bed about 3-3.5hrs before the sun. Charming!!
I find birds poop on mine during the day.

But which would you prefer having a bit of trouble getting the kids to bed or the kids up at 4am in the morning?

They don't get up at 4am though.....I think I am misunderstanding what you mean though? The sun does come through the window in the room where DS2 sleeps, but he sleeps through anything. However, DS1 gets up at 5-5:30 each day, he will be back to getting up at 4-4:30 for about the 4-5mths following it starting. Thankfully he stays in bed until I get up at 7 though.

I love in SA and I hate daylight savings. I don't see the point of it. Why extend the daylight to 9-10pm in Summer when it is 35 degrees outside, but make it get dark at 5pm in Winter? If they just cut it out all together, we would save money on electicity (won't need to use heaters/aircons as much) and we wouldn't have to get our kids into a new pattern twice a year.
The time on a clock dosen't change the total hours of daylight on any particular day  Just plan your day to get up an hour earlier/later.

Can I ask why they are changing it in the first place?

I guess i'm lucky that my kids will sleep as late as i let them - usually 7:30 - 8am! Doesn't matter when the sun comes up. But when my DD is running around at night and the suns up, that's a different story :banghead:
And I guess i am an idiot, cause i would still vote against it - can someone please point out the advantages? (remembering i live in sunny north qld - i don't need an extra hour of sunlight)

Yep, I'm all for daylight saving in winter (nothing worse than taking the kids to school at 9 when it is still below zero degrees) but I can't stand it in summer.

I'm in QLD, so I don't really mind if NSW goes on Daylight Savings early or not.
I'm glad we don't have it here - hang over from being made to go to bed while it was still "day" as a kid in Victoria I guess (Holidays with Grandparents).
What really ticks me off is that people keep suggesting that we have another referendem to vote on it. Why? We had one (and a trial year), the people said no. As I'm sure most of the toddler mums here will understand, its not ok to jsut keep asking and asking and asking and asking for something until you get it! :o
Unless they were going to have another on in a few years time to see if people want to change it back?
It's already daylight until 7-9pm in QLD, depending on where you live. When it's been 40 degrees all day, who wants until 8 - 10pm for the sun to go down?
They don't get up at 4am though.....I think I am misunderstanding what you mean though? .
Sorry what I ment was that in QLD where we have no daylight saving it gets light much earler which means my kids are awake at 4am :( In other states with day light saving it is still dark this early and instead is light when you are putting your children to bed.
So I guess it is a choise of having problems getting the kids to bed or having the problem of them getting up too early.
For me I would much rather put up with the trouble getting them to bed then have them wake so early.
Kelli79 - I think the best advantage of daylight saving is that working parents get extra daylight hours to play outside with their kids. I grew up in NSW and one of my fondest memories growing up was playing backyard cricket after dinner with my parents during summer.
