View Full Version : Baby proofing the house!
So... I havent baby proofed at all, we moved in when DS was around 10 weeks. I started thinking about baby proofing the other day, DS is only 4.5 months but time is flying by, he will be crawling in no time! I went to the chemist and totally got overwhelmed by everything. Whose done it already? Any tips?? What do we need/not need? I have NO idea where to start. Maybe Ill just bubble wrap the whole house... :detective:

its scary stuff all the things they can kill themselves with !!!
My baby today was pulling on an extension cord my DH left plugged in at the kitchen. It was next to the electric frypan. As she pulled on the cord from the floor, the frypan nearly fell on her head!
I am with you.. bubblewrap the whole house. :D
ha ha bubblewrap the baby!!!
I was all panicky too and now DS has been crawling for about 6 weeks and we have only done the bare minimum.
- safety plug stopper things in all the electrical points
- childproof latches on the two lower cupboard doors with chemicals in them (one in the kitchen with dishwashing detergent and one in the laundry)
- removed anything really dangerous from reach.
But that's it! DS has free range of the house (under my supervision) and yes, he pulls books out of the bookshelf and he will probably smack his head on the edge of the coffee table etc but we figure this is his way of learning how the world works :D When he starts pulling himself up we'll probably review everything again.
I have a safety gate that was given to me and it's still leaning against the garage wall so am glad we didn't buy this one. I reckon the musts are the plugs for the electrical sockets, and anything else is what you feel you need at the time.
Have fun!!!

i did not "baby proof" the house its not possible
my daughter is now 8 she has done more damage to herself at school in the playground than any home
just cover off the basics power points and chemicals and do what you need at the time
teach about the world as you go and review if needed
and maybe for your own piece of mind do a first aid class if something terrible should ever happen you then will know what to do

The only things I am going to do for DD are to buy a small safety gate for the kitchen so she cant burn herself on the oven i'f it's on. All cupboards have locks cos of DS lol.
I also want to get a bigger gate for the front lounge which is the play room, so I can lock her in there with DS :devil6: plus it's carpeted in there, not in the family, so will be better for her to crawl.
I haven't started 'baby-proofing' yet, but I've certainly been thinking about stuff since I got pregnant. I've moved things like the medicines from the kitchen to our ensuite, and bought plastic tubs with clip-lock lids for the laundry as I don't have cupboards in there (yet).
I do want a baby gate, but this is for the protection of our Greyhound (who has just had a leg removed because of bone cancer). Lol! I can just see K crawling over and giving her a thump. And trying to eat her dinners! Hahahaha...
But apart from locking the cupboards with the cleaning stuff in them and plug thingies... Not much.
A friend of mine cleared the bottom drawer out and put some of bubs things in it. That's 'his' drawer and she reckons he never bothers with anything else because he knows he's allowed to go in that one.

Buy a playpen and put everything valuble in it.
I'm not able to put cupboard locks on the cupboards because they don't work, so i have tired the ones with the breakables and chemicals up with freezer bags, everything else is DD domain, any room we don't want her in we shut the door, but she has toys in almost every cupboard, she just plays in them and doesn't bother with the cupboard tired up.. We can even leave them untired.. But i'm padantic witht the being mtired because i just don't trust her enough to no she wont get curious.
ive put a lock on dfs beer cabinet, he brews his own beer! and i only did that coz i seen my 3yr old nephew drinking his beer! OOPS!!! Otherwise Cassie has full run of the house! (well will when she can crawl) she has a toy room and i have nothing valuable in the places she can reach!
The easiest way I found to figure out what needs to be done is to have my girlfriend over with her little girl who was crawling and is now walking. It was like a test run, I made a list of everything that she started to get into. And I tell ya, they are like magnets to trouble! If it's something that can hurt them, they will find it.
We've already put some protective corners on our coffee table because of our friends little girl and we'll also do power points and a gate for the kitchen and move all chemicals or put latches on doors/drawers we don't want him getting into.
