MOrning All..
I have been told that you need to give 2 weeks notice to your lecturer or tutor if you are to bring your child in to a class with you, if there is no other care option.
In the past I have been stuck at home with my baby girl and missed out on classes because of my mum who was looking after her couldnt make it over , which left me with the fear of having an unsettled child at uni and everyone else staring at me!!
:O Id rather stay home and get the lec notes off the website anyways !! Im curious to know whether anyone else has been stuck in that situation where they have taken babys or kids into class with them and whether they got in trouble or negative reactions for doing so! ?
Cheers

I nwated too, but my lecturer said I coudn't bring in the bubs. I've had to leave my degree, even though I only had 3 subjects left.
i once had to go into uni with DS1 when he was about 12months, I had a tutorial and an assignment had to be handed in at the beginning. we weren't going to stay just hand it on and go.
The look on the tutors face was priceless when he walked in and DS was sitting there waiting  He was a very conservative tax lawyer!
But I have heard of a girl in our year at uni bringing a new born and breastfeeding during tutes and lectures. we often had slightly older children sitting with their parents when they had a day off school etc.
I have previously taken my first bub to uni with me when he was newborn to 3months. There was never a problem he either slept through the lecture or I put him on the breast and he'd quietly feed.
I currently attend uni now and quite a few mums have had to bring in their kids with them (uni during school holidays, care givers sick etc) there are never any problems there either and our lecturers have said many times if you get stuck bring them. However the standard rule of curtesty applies - under no circumstances do you let your child interupt someone elses learning. So if your toddler is running around the lecture theatre, baby screaming or pre-schooler whining for snacks -- then you cut your losses and take them out of the class room. :)
on the subject of uni childcare centres - ours is full and has a 2+ year waiting list... they wouldn't even let me put my name down for an odd day.
And at the other end of the spectrum.... as the daughters of two academics my sister and I spent many a school holiday sitting up the back of lecture rooms
Uni childcare is ridiculous. I know there are 3 childcare centres located on my campus but they are all stuffed to the brim (mostly with the children of lecturers and other workers at the uni) and have a waiting list of about a year. Perhaps things are better where you are, if so take advantage of it! They often offer childcare for set times and days (Friday afternoons only, for instance) so that you can just leave the kids there during lectures and tutorials.
If not, contact your lecturer/tutor directly and ask them if it's okay to bring your child into classes with you, stating the reasons you might need to do so from time to time. Most are really quite accommodating. Out of consideration to classmates, it would be kinder if you did what Lut's classmate did: sit close to the door, if the child becomes unsettled, walk out of the room to settle them and return when they are quiet again.
There was one woman in my lectures who had her baby and didn't take those precautions - she let the child cry for a while before going out and, because she chose to sit at the back, she disrupted the class all the time. The lecturer ignored it as best she could. The rest of us rolled our eyes a lot.

I go to uni at Griffith Uni in brisbane
the childcare for my uni isnt actually on campus or even remotely close to it!!(Nathan campus) I think the childcare is for the gold coast campus students or from interstate students or even the staff that cant get thier children in anywhere else. to tell u the truth I havent really looked into it that much. my daughter now goes to a daycare near my home
When my daughter was getting looked after though, and when she was about 4 months old I was still BFeeding her on a regular basis. when Id go to uni, i had to go express my breastmilk every so often coz my boobs would get sooo full and sore!!! one day I actually lactated and despite having 3 breastpads inside my bra i still leaked onto my tshirt!! how embarrassing!!!! :banghead:  that was in the middle of a lecture ...of all the places!!!
but.. alot of other students who I have met said they would love to meet my daughter and see her hang out with her mum and mates at uni!!! hey i might even get extra points on my assignments for having a lil one to look after aswell as a 3000 word essay!!
;) thanks for all your feedback

I have never heard of the 2 week rule! Surely just the rules of common courtesy apply, although I must admit I wasn't game to take dd into classes, luckily a friend of mine minded her when she was 4mths old for a few hours so I could go to a tute before I got her into childcare.
