View Full Version : When to stop giving a dummy
Hi
I was just wondering when the best time is to stop giving a dummy?
I think my son wakes up during the night because he wants his dummy. He falls a sleep with his dummy and he will wake up a few times but with a dummy he useally goes back to sleep. I'm hoping that when he doesn't have his dummy anymore he will sleep through the night.
Does anyone have any experience with this???
Thanks,
Nifty

I got rid of the dummy at around the 6 month mark with both kids (DD just before and DS just after)
It took a few long settles and a bit of cuddling to sleep (I am currently weaning DS off being cuddled to sleep but as he is BF and has been falling asleep on the boob it is a bit tricky)
I found that this timefram worked for me and I didn't have any problems getting rid of it (I think I have heard an "expert" say that before 7-8 months is easier as they don't rememeber it as much).
Good luck with your dummy removal!:goodvibes:
i assume it's not going to be easy to get my 9 month old to fall a sleep without a dummy. My other son never had a dummy and loved going to sleep.
I'm thinking about starting with his morning sleeps. Do you think this is a good idea or will it undo all of my work in the evening?
Thanks for your reply

With both my 2 I started with the middle of the night feeds when they had mostly BF to sleep anyway then with DD I did the day sleeps and finally the night time sleep and with DS I had sort of stopped the night time dummying then just went totally cold turkey when I was visiting my mum and dad - I think it helped that I had an extra pair of hands for settling with no boob or dummy.
Perhaps see how he goes with no dummy with the morning sleep and jsut go through the day with no dummy and see how he goes he may surprise you!:goodvibes:
Good luck sending dummy free vibes your way:hugs:
We went cold turkey with DS's dummy at 8 months - he was losing it during the night and waking up to have it replaced. He got used to it within about a week. Make sure you're ready because it's confusing if you keep giving in and giving it back to them.
Thanks girls
Harriet when you did it cold turkey did your ds sleep trough the night?

DD went 'cold turkey' by controlled crying method at about 5 months old. I decided to do it one afternoon sleep cos I was sick of getting up 10 times in 5 mins in the night to stick it back in!
She slept through that night and was a great sleeper ever since!
With DS, he had a dummy from about 6 weeks old and self-weaned when he stopped breastfeeding. He stopped breastfeeding & taking the dummy at the same time so it made it easy for me!! :yelclap:
DD stoppedhaving the dummy at about 5mths.
I was getting a wee bit frustrated cuz she would pull it out to play with it (just stopped swaddling so the use of her hands was very...interesting to her :o). and she would drop it so would cry for me to go back in and pop it back in. i wouldnt even be out the door before she had it in her hands again.
so it was time to go, dummy! Havent looked back :D
