View Full Version : dosnt exist does he mummy? He is just imaginary.......
Hmm this is exactly my problem at the moment. I have christian beliefs but I am not strictly christian as I also have my cultural beliefs. It can be slightley confusing...but I also value my culture.
Both of my children have been christianed but are free to follow their own beliefs when they are older.
Anyway my daughter came home from school the other day and says 'god dosnt exist does he mummy? He is just imaginary'.
I wonder what conversation that topic came up in and which child she offended with that statement. This has lead to my teaching her to be sensitive about other childrens beliefs.
Her Grandma bought her a childs bible with the storys from both the old and new testament but written as stories. Some of these are a bit violent for a child. So how would I go about introducing religion to my little one? Or in the very least the values associated with our beliefs?

i feel that you are already teaching your little one by helping her understad that others may have other beliefs and to be sensitive. i know that it is not easy. maybe teach her some songs or find less violent "childrens" books that have the basics. Like about the creation or who Jesus is and how he was a good person who always loved others and did what was right. i myself am a christian from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly known as a Mormon). Children are a spounge and they soak up as much knowledge as they can. Just keep it simple and be consistent with the things you teach. Make it fun and enjoyable too.
Good luck I hope that i have helped.

I am a Christian and would you believe it a member of the LDS Church too!
My husband is Maori but he was brought up Christian and we would like to bring up our kids with Christian values.
That I think is the most important thing is to teach those values that u hold dear. I think being an example is very important too.

My DH and I are both Christians. We plan to keep it simple and help our children to understand that Jesus is with them every moment of the day even though they can't see Him and that they are never truly alone. Tell them how He was picked on by many people, often wasn't very popular, but wants to be their friend and they will perhaps identify with his life as they grow. There are some great kids' bible stories around- and christian children's stories that aren't from the bible that are good too. www.word.com.au is a great resource.
Our DS also loves the creche run by our church. Listen to your children's worries and anxieties and encourage them to ask God for help in any area of their life. Look for opportunities to explain things like forgiveness and mercy and the idea that God loves everyone equally, no matter where they come from/what they do ect. For example, if you were to sponsor a child or were putting a pressie under one of those wishing trees, explain that God loves all children and that He wants us to help out others who don't have much food or toys or parents that love them. Things like that stick with children and often they can recall these sorts of things later in life- my parents weren't outspoken with their faith but I remember my Nana telling me that God loves me so much- I have never forgotten.
i think this is a natrual question as all 3eldest have asked it so i put them in scipture at school as dh and i dont follow an religion we still belive its our kids right to discover what is out there and through them going 1 has chosen not to belive but the other 2 do and its only through listening and talking about it can they disside for them selfs and the storys are not as gory at school
Wow thanks for the advice guys. I have to say I was definitely caught off guard by the question and had thought, until this point that she was aware of god and the part in our life that he plays.
I think at the moment as long as she has a broad understanding and is taught the values then maybe we are starting on the right foot. Just a little confused where exactly to start as I cant remember how I learnt its just always been a part of my life.

There are some pretty significant differences, but I'm sure a google search will turn them up without me boring people with them ;) Try something like "baptist christian beliefs" / "mormon faith" and I'm sure you'll get some basic info. :)

Just be wary that there is plenty of anti mormon stuff out there.
Maybe try LDS if you are truly interested.
