Hi everyone,

I'm about to start swimming lessons (tomorrow morning) for my (almost - will be in 5 days) 6 month old. I was just wondering if anyone else has started swimming lessons?
Or is planning on going?
:yelclap:

I am excited but also a little nervous about it all.

I started dd at 12 months and will do the same with ds as they are too prone to ear infections before then.
I did start dd at kindermusik at 6 months to have an activity with her.
I don't think that there is any right age to start them. Just do what you think is right. Some people have told me to never go to swimming lessons because it makes young children too confident in the water and therefore put themselves in situations where they approach water with no fear and then get into trouble. I ignored that advice knowing that my children will never be unsupervised at such a young age. My only fear is illness and so that is why we delay to 12 months.

Happy swimming....it is so much fun.

Our 6 month old started 2 weeks ago. He is not too keen on them - is happy for the first 15 mins and not so happy for the second 15 mins. We have paid for a term so will go for the term but after that I am not sure what we will do as they seem like a waste of money to me at that age. Everything that happens you could do yourself at the local pool.

My DS is 6 months old and he had his first lesson on Monday and had a great time! It took him a little bit to warm up to it but by the end of the lesson he was laughing and splashing around.
We decided to start swimming lessons young as DS will be around water alot in his life and while his brain is so receptive to new things we thought it was a good idea, plus DS loves being in the shower and the bath so I knew he would enjoy it.

Thanks :)
I am a little worried about him getting sick but he loves the water (baths & showers) so I decided to take the risk. I figure if his health suffers I can always withdraw him. That doesn't stop me worrying though. DP is all for it too, we want our boy to never be scared of water and we are hoping that by teaching him early he never will be. DP suggests that DS immune should be good because I breast feed him. I'm hoping he doesn't get sick and looking forward to finding out.
The classes I have enrolled in cost $8.50 for 1/2 hour. Sadly I wouldn't know the first thing about teaching a bub how to swim. I think it will be nice to meet other mums too. :)

Hi Kuddles
Im planning on starting Lincoln in the new term in Jan, he will be 7 months old. But, I want to get him in the water before that so will take him swimming soon with some Mums from playgroup with bubs the same age. I think its important for bubs to get into the water ASAP.

I've got him some swimmers and a rashie, but I gotta buy a water nappy first!

Hi Lilahh,
I think it is too. I'm going to start off using huggies until I can find and buy a good swim nappy :)
I already have a rashie, swimmers and little boardies. :)

DS also 6months starts Swimming this Sunday morning....The only time that had a spot left DP will get to take him.
Our plan is only to go a term and pick up swimming with him.
We have a all-in-one swim suit for him and awhile ago aldi had some swim nappies so we picked them up to use.

If you use huggies swimmer nappies they are washable (as long as they havent done a poo). I have used the same nappy for the last 3 weeks and it is fine. I just put it in a delicates bag.

I would never have thought of that. Thanks for the tip.

Wow that is cool how they give you a lesson for free :) Jake loves his too. :) It went really well. :fingerscrossed: yours does too.

Gosh, if you don't mind me asking but how are you going to do it?

I hope everyones swim classes go well. We had an absolute ball. I'm so sore now though. The pool was an awkward depth for me so the half an hour felt like an intense work out. Jake loved all the games.
Be prepared for them to be SO tired afterward. Jake looked like he was going to fall asleep in the water. He slept very well afterwards. First big day sleep for a long time (40 mins). :yelclap:

When are they 6 months? That is the earliest that they do them at the centre here too. I think it is a good age though. It might be because a lot of babies lack head control.
I hope when you start your little ones love it as much as Jake does. :)

Maybe also cos of their immunisations - they've had their three rounds by then.

We've started swimming - DS is still unsure about sticking his head under but loves splashing :D We're using the huggies swim pants (and reusing them!) and a rashie and some cute little speedos.

I wish DS got tired after the lessons - everyone assured me this is a sure fire way of getting them to have a big nap. Yeah, someone forgot to tell our baby that bit!!

Kian's been swimming since he was 10 weeks. It's not 'swimming lessons' though just singing and movement really. Then I get a lovley aquatherapy session afterwards! He absolutely adores it. I'll definitely keep on with the swimming lessons. They are an essential part of life in Australia I feel, due to the amount of time they spend around water.
Kmart do Swim nappies but I always use a Lil Swimmer nappy with it. Just don't trust them to hold everything in, Lol!

Don't stress about bub not liking it at first. It's new and very, very tiring. They will get used to the feeling and end up enjoying it much more. Kian has been going for 3 months now and still falls asleep immediately and sleeps for ages!

They have a private lesson, DF & I take one each & the instructor has one. Its their big activity of the week.

Thats what i thought. Considering we spend a lot time on the water during summer, at the beach & have a pool. I thought it was a very good idea.
Now i just need to get them life jackets for when we're out in the boat.

Can I just say how very impressed I am that you are getting lessons so early. I have friends who haven't taught their little ones to swim and their kids range from 2-5. They only have 1 child. With multiples I think it is even more important because water safety would be so much harder to ensure when there is a higher child-adult ratio. I don't say this to offend anyone but I just think it is brilliant :)

We'll be starting DD asap. She's not 6 months yet. Can't wait!
We didn't start DS until he was nearly 2, and it had it's set of problems, although they were overcome after the first 2 lessons. I will DEF be getting DD in as early as possible.

cassie will be 6 months end of nov, so i think we will be starting in jan- we have taken her to the pool a few times just to float around she loves it we were in the water 1hr both times she was asleep by the time we were at the car!

Herchy & Lozie2 - I am still so excited about it. :) It is such an awesome age to get them in the pool. I love how they are just so happy to float around in your arms and how DS doesn't get scared. He was just lapping up the warmth, attention and hugs.
Lozie2 how'd she go for the hour? Did she enjoy it? I was wondering how a bub would go. DS's lesson was only 1/2 hour but he was exhausted afterwards. He nearly fell asleep in the water which was strange because he rarely sleeps.

kuddles- she loved it! she was splashing and giggling! she isn't too bad when we put her head under! its getting out and dressed she doesn't like! she could have stayed in the water longer! i wanted out!
i cant wait for swimming lessons! i want to take her november but im pretty sure they go by school terms and there is no real point going for like 3 weeks before breaking for Christmas!

Lozie2 - That's awesome. DS was too tired to even care about the getting out bit. LOL He was just so overwhelmed he didn't splash about all that much but rather kicked back and relaxed. He did get excited with the duck catching activity.
They go by school terms here, over christmas they offer swimming class options but not sure about what they offer for little ones.

The adli swimers are great and over half the price of the others There were on sale a while ago but I havent seen them again.
Did all the babies have their head's under the water?
