hi ladies
Im a lil bit of a newbie here
this may sound like a stupid question but can you take anti Histamines while TTCing i have to take them everyday in spring and summer coz i get the worst hay fever EVER and im worried about any chance i might have of conceiving as it been hard enough.
any advice would be great
Thank you
I'm not an expert or anything but I studied pharmacology at uni...
Antihistamines can have a slight anticholinergic effect, and one of the things anticholinergic drugs do is inhibit exocrine secretions- so basically they dry up things like saliva, tears, and I would assume this includes cervical mucus as well.
& lots of healthy CM is obviously an important part of TTC!
So short answer yes, antihistamines could be very slightly detrimental to TTC, but there is such a large range of antihistamines available and other ways to help overcome any issues with this that I'm sure it wouldn't be a real problem.
But I'd check with a doctor!
Hope that helps & good luck!

:iagree: with Little Miss - so to help combat the situation, maybe take the antihistamines for your hayfever, but use a sperm friendly lubricant like Pre-Seed when you DTD around O to ensure you have enough CM for the little guys to swim in and hang around until you O
cool!
(lol I think this is the first time I've ever said anything useful on BH!) :p
I'd be interested to hear what the doctor says, I'm not TTC right now but I also take heaps of antihistamines for dust allergies so will have to consider this as well in the next couple of years!

OK Ladies i got some very useful info from my GP who is just fantastic, i got all my shots up to date whooping cough and swine flu didnt need rebella :yelclap:
anyways there are 5 main classifications of antihistamines
A, B1, 2, 3, C, D and X
the doc said A and B1,2,3 are good for women TTCing or pregnant as they cause no damage to the fetus.
C and D may cause damage to the fetus
X will defiantly cause damage to the fetus
so her recommendations are the following 4 Antihistamines
Alledine (Lorataine) - B1 - Long Lasting and wont make you feel groggy.
Alzine (Cetirizine) - B2 - wont make you feel groggy, but not long lasting.
Zertec - B2 - Long Lasting and wont make you feel groggy.
Claramax (Desloratadine) - B1 - Long Lasting and wont make you feel groggy.
So any of these are fine make sure you write down the name in () as this is the ingredient and are in brands that have different names eg the first one is claratine clear. These will all effect CM but she said combined with some Pre seed luricant i shouldnt have a problem :smiliedance:
Hope this helps anyone else who has the same problem
Good Luck Ladies :fingerscrossed:
awesome, thanks so much for posting that!
:)
all the best with TTC and with getting your hayfever under control! (lol I've been sneezing & blowing my nose all day so you have totally have my sympathy with that one) :p
