Ds has had this horrible cold/flu for a bout 2 weeks now. He seemed as good as better, appetite back and just the dreggs of a runny nose left. Anyway he has developed this dreadful cough, which occurs mainly when he sleeps. It keeps waking up and yesterday ended up making him vomit.
I have been using a humidifier round the clock in the living area adn his room. I'm not keen on giving cough mixture so I was wondering if anyone has any home/natural remedies to ease his coughing??
I have thought about elevating one end of his mattress but he is a champion climber and I'm worried this coould give him enough height to attempt climbing out.
Any idea most appreciated!
Hi there
I don't know about natural remedies but we took our son to the emergency doc last sunday for his coughing and found he had an extremely inflamed throat and was in a lot of pain. Got a prescription for Amoxil which has worked a treat. Also, have you tried a vapouriser. We are using one at nights with him and it also helps to clear the head. Hope he gets well soon.

not trying to stress you out or anything
get it checked immediately
there is whooping cough making the rounds at the moment and vaccinations are only 83% effective even if complete.
even if he doesn't have whopping cough, then he more than likely has a respiratory tract infection which cannot be cleared up with herbal anything.
i too am not keen on antibiotics or medication, but just went through this with DS, and he had very similar symptoms to your littlie.
don't worry too much, once they get the right medication, it all clears up pretty quick!!!
I have had DS at the doc recently for the same thing.
He checked out fine and my doc said to just keep up with humidifier, and also gave me some of the baby balsam vicks. that seems to be doing the trick.
Hope he gets better soon!
I'll put my hand up here. Sounds exactly like what DS and myself have.
Apparently its viral and can hang around for up to 6 weeks. We had a vaporiser in DS's room but it seemed to aggrivate it believe it or not - last night I took it out and he slept all night.
Yes there is whooping cough, the Dr took tests for DS for that but also said there are several viral infections that are very similar in symptoms at the moment.
Dont know any herbals to help with this one as its awful! But the Dr said to give DS some cough medicine for chesty coughs as relief (as hes still mucusy). My ribs, stomach and back hurt from coughing to the point of gagging too so I feel for your poor bub.
Hope thats some help.
my DS is 14months has the same cough, runny nose and for the last week has been vomiting. Really scarey esp at nite, you hear him choking. He also has no appetite, won't touch dinner meals for the last week. Don't want it to turn into a behaviour thing where he knows he can refuse dinner but get desert(as he's still eating custard etc):ecomcity: trying to ignore it today and not give biscuits.

my DD has had the same thing for 10 days now and it has been just a nightmare, the sleepless nights are getting me down and both my husband and i are also sick. i guess it is reasurring that it is going around. we have been to numerous drs and emergency twice and there still seems no relief in sight. what a horrible illness this is.

I too would really get this checked out if its whooping cough it needs to be treated immediately & if it isnt then you dont want this getting to the point where you lo develops pneumonia.
Ive had whooping cough a few years ago full ball & it isnt fun ... It always hit worse at nite so please get it checked.

Tahnks everyone for all your support and advice. I called nurse on call yesterday arvo and they thought it sounded like croup adn told me how to handle it. I still wanted to get it checked by someone in the flesh though so headed to an open doctors surgery last night. Basically just a red throat- chest, ears, etc all clear, nothing to really worry about. Just keep an eye and make sure it doesn't get worse. Poor littel guy just needs lots of cuddles and sleeping in bed with mummy at night. He slept much better last night and seems better today than yesterday so:fingerscrossed: he will be all better soon!
Hope it starts clearing up soon :fingerscrossed:
Both EJ and myself had a pretty horrid cold a while ago - EJ still has the cough which is worse when she falls asleep - coughs so bad it wakes her up :( and when the air is cold (night/morning etc). She's on antibiotics AGAIN now cause it started to get worse again and she had a bit of a wheeze in one lung - Im really hoping it clears up soon - :fingerscrossed: the last few days it has seemed to be getting a bit better.
we have had the same thing for about 6 weeks now ... just a dripping nose (clear though) and a horrid cough..
DR cleared us of pretty much everything (even x-rayed his little chest) - and has decided it is just a basic viral infection and there is nothing he can do .. he is also reluctant to prescribe antibiotics (although he told us if we wanted to we could buy a spacer and ventolin for the mornings .. to help open everything up .. which we did)
nothing else works.. we have been sleeping in the lounge room with the reverse cycle heater on - we found that it limited night time coughing ..
good luck .. it is horrid when they are sick :(
