Hi

about three wks ago my son had an autism assessment which they said my son had änxiety and thats it. So i sort a second opinion at the royal childrens hospital who said its a strong possibility that he does have autism. However today i had a phone call from the people who done the first assessment as the royal children rang them to get the assessment sent to them and they rang me and said they are clear its not autism and ïf i shopped enough for a doctor i would get the diagnosis i wanted". I am so hurt about it, why would i want my son to have autism? i know my son and i know there is something wrong with him, but i want to help him, thats why i am getting a 2nd opinion. I just want to know if anyone has had this happen to them, when they know there child has something but some professionals dont listen. The first assessment people said my son has anxiety and behaviour problems because of my depression...well my depression started after my 21mth old daughter was born, he has had problem well before that...

thanks for listening.

Hey

Really feel for you. Our 7 year old daughter has mild Dyspraxia and mild drift off ADD. I know what it is like going through all the appointments to get a 'label' for what is 'wrong' with your child, it is heartbreaking.

While I underdtand you don't 'want' your child to have autism, you know in your gut that there is something not right and you want to know exactly what it is, so that you can go down the right path to getting the right help.

So the first lot of people called you to tell you your son doesn't have autism ? What about the Childrens Hsopital - what did they say ? And as for being told to 'shop around' that is just awful.

I don't know if it will help, but our daughter was diagnosed with dyspraxia by her occupational therapist, it was confirmed by a child psychologist. Maybe you should take your son to an occupational therapist, they are brilliant and they will do an assessment for you. You may need to get the diagnosis confirmed by a second professional, but it doesn't sound as though you've had any relief through the channels you have been going down, you should try something different ?

I don't know if I have helped at all, I hope you find an understanding professional soon, who will take your concerns seriously.

The strange thing is the first people said not autism but the royal childrens are saying they think it is autism... I there is something wrong. I am just hurt the lady from the first assessment rang me up and spoke to me like that. Hopefully at my appointment on Monday 26th at the royal childrens ill get some answers.

How did your appt on the 26th go ? Are you any closer yet to getting to the bottom of this ? Are you happy with the appointment (what they said to you) ?

If you're not happy with the doctors you are seeing, then you need to go elsewhere - you need a sympathetic understanding doctor who takes your concerns seriously.

Let us know how you went

Hi MellyMoo
i was happy with appt. im still unsure about what the next step is. My son doesnt have autism but does have features of autism. He has major developmental delays (global developmental delay) and is questioning maybe an intellectual disability.

I think the next step is getting another iq test next year to see what his score is, he got 71 last year which was one score off getting an aid for him in the class room. The dr thinks my son has regressed and would most likely get a lower score at this stage.

Anyways im just waiting for her to send the report and then i guess ill wait til the iq test next year
