View Full Version : I'm disappointed that Dr Oz is a circumcision advocate

I watched an episode of Oprah yesterday where Dr Oz was the main host answering Qs from an all male audience. I couldn't believe it when he mentioned circ. Increases sexual sensitivity and reduces STD transmission. He relayed the info as if they're proven facts. I really like Dr Oz and trust his expertise so this has confused me about circ. Regardless, these pros are not enough for me to consent to circ.
I'm thinking that there will be a lot of uninformed people being persuaded by Dr Oz to consider circ. I

Doesn't surprise me since he is Turkish and probably Muslim.

I was suspicious too that he might be biased based on some religious belief. I thought maybe he's Jewish. So he's of Turskish origin...hmm... Interesting.

Didn't see the Oprah episode.

I've seen articles in the newspaper recently about studies that found circumcised males do have 50% less chance of STD transmission.
So his statements could be based on fact.
I don't know about the increased sexual sensitivity, I thought it was the opposite.

although it is true, these 'facts', I still find cutting a peice of my son's genitals off thourough overkill.

Actually after getting pregnant, I realise just how magical this body of ours is, and although there are 'some' benefits to cutting the forskin off, I'm quite sure there are more benefits to keeping it.

Perhaps we just can't prove it yet.

In all seriousness, if you think of what happens during pregnancy and birth, how can you not think there is a reason for it to be there?

I must admit that we had planned to circumcise if we had a boy.
But I definitely wanted to give it more thought after coming across bubhub and this section.
And I didn't have to make that decision as we have a baby girl.

Curious to know how circumcision came about in the first place.

Here is a history of circumcision.

Don't know how biased the website :o is but interesting reading:

These "facts" he speaks of are just not true. There is plenty of discussions on BH about these so called facts and it actually can be proved that they are not true. The foreskin is actually a really useful piece of anatomy.

I think you have got to question a doctor that advocates a surgical procedure for an infant that has no medical required basis.

Circumcisions should only be performed if there is a medically indicated need for it, or if the owner of the penis would like it done.

Increases sexual sensitivity and reduces STD transmission. That's great Doctor Oz, but I'm yet to hear of a baby having sex unprotected or not... so if i have a boy I'll let him make his mind up for himself, when he is old enough to understand the pro's and con's for himself ;)

I saw that episode a while back. I too was shocked by what he was calling facts. I'm pretty sure the sensitivity thing is the opposite. I'm not sure about the transmission of STDs theory but I do know that a lot of people do believe it.

Good point!

And well I have to say I do believe the studies that found that circumcision reduces STD transmission.
Well only some STD's.
It makes sense to me that the foreskin would be susceptible to tears and therefore more at risk for transmission of HIV.
But that wouldn't persuade me to circumcise or not, as it reportedly reduces the risk by 50% or 60%. That's not really enough to feel safe. Promoting safe sex is clearly the answer here.

i see it as teaching safe sex and how to look after and clean yourself

or lets just cut it off so we don't have to deal with it

as far as Oprah well we can believe everything on that show NOT

the reasons why it was introduced don't exist anymore its more cosmetic docking of dogs in now banned about time we took the same approach to humans

no prize for guessing i am against it

I believe Dr Oz knows very little about the foreskin. A few years back he said some really crazy things (which no-one else says.)

BTW Oprah has had on her show, at least 4 times, a woman who promotes anti-aging cream made from infant foreskins.

I have heard using this cream is Oprah's way of looking young.

:barf:That has to be one of the grossest things I've ever heard. I won't complain at mum so much now about the anti-aging cream she has which claims to be made of sheeps placenta

LMAO

Well it's frustrating but Dr's everywhere seem to accept conclusions from so many studies without actually looking into the variables and it's application. (similar arguments on treatment for partial molar pregnancies, some believe a study that was conducted on a control group of 200 women, some don't)

For example most that cite the studies for HIV refer to those conducted in african nations... If we consider the people that are included in the study those who are circumcised are usually coming from a higher socio-economic group and are already less likely to become infected with HIV. The boys born of poor families are less likely to have to procedure done.

As far as I'm concerned those studies don't show decreased HIV in circumcised boys, just higher rates in those who don't practice safe sex either due to lack of education or limited access to condoms.

Which study are you referring to draw this conclusion?
