To other Mums who have tummy sleeping bubs, do you put bubs into bed on their tummy or back or side?

My 8 mth DS sleeps on his tummy and loves it but I don't know whether he should be put to bed on his tummy or on his back and let him roll onto his tummy.

We've tried back, side & tummy with varying results. Sometimes he'll go to bed on his back and self settle, sometimes he won't and will roll onto his tummy where he'll self settle but also sometimes won't. Other times, if he's put to bed on his tummy he'll self settle. It seems to change each day (sometimes even with each sleep!!).

He's crawling so it takes longer to settle him because he crawls out from under the blankets to the end of the cot, babbles, sings etc so we have to go in at least once and put him back under the blankets on his tummy before he'll self settle.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you manage it? I know it's a developmental stage but am looking to make it a bit easier for him (& us!!).

Thanks:)
