View Full Version : burp cloths/spew rags
Hi Guys,
Now i know this isn't a particular cloth nappy topic but i know there are a lot of helpful ladies who read this thread so thought id post it here:p.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on whether im best off buying a few terry cotton flats as burp cloths:barf: or make some myself?
Interested to see if anyone else has done the math and whats cheaper/more effective???
Thanks in advance,
Alice
I suppose if you are handy with a sewing machine you could buy a few metres of terry towelling from a fabric shop and knock some up yourself. I just found it easier to get some terry cloth nappies from the shops though. They are super cheap, well made (so the seams aren't going to fray etc) and the perfect size for just about any job you want to use them for.
I am not very handy so I have never looked into it. However when I bought some eenie weenie nappy pants they came with 6 terry nappy flats cut in half (I got 12 in total). I found that this was well and truly enough for us.
They came in handy for laying under bub when we change him, burp/ spew cloths, cleaning sticky hands and faces, nappy free time, etc.

I bought a pack from bigw - they were really cheap. It would cost me more in time to go and buy the material & then sew it up (not to mention I'd have to buy a sewing machine ).
Sorry, not very helpful I know. :)

I find terry can get a little scratchy so that I dont want to rub it on bubs face. I think flannellette is softer and more gentle, but not as absorbant. If you are up for making your own, I think one side flanelette sewn onto terry would make a great option.

I just bought a packet of terry flats and used those. :D DS ended up getting so attached to the feeling of his face against a terry that he takes one (or more if he can possibly smuggle them in) to bed with him.
The suggestion of one side terry, one side flannelette is a good one! We started out using folded cloth nappies when DD was newborn, so my Mum bought us a couple of dozen flannelette and a couple of dozen terry flats. We couldn't use the flannel nappies for DD becaose she pee'd through them too quickly, but they were great for lining change tables etc. But then you can buy cheap flannel blankets or nappies and just have some of each if, again like me, you aren't too handy with the old sewing machine!
I think terry flats and flannel blankets are the best gift someone can give a new or expectant mum!

Flannelette squares make excellent burb cloths. When DD1 was due we brought terry squares and flannelette squares and found the flannelette no good for nappies bu excellent for burb cloths, the terry was a bit scratchy for face wiping but the flannelette nice and soft. Also good for lining the change table and because DD1 and DD3 were both very chucky we used to lay a flannelette nappy out flat in the cot for their head/shoulders to lie on - much easier than changing the sheets all the time.

we used terry towels, have a look in second hand shops some time they have some that people have giveaway, and they might have them for cheap, and all u have to do is wash them. i'm lucky as i have mine from tali so i have old ones and i'm getting new ones but for his bum.
Wow thanks girls for the quick responses. I'm making a fair few other things for bub so might just see how i go with time when i go on maternity leave in feb, or rope my nan into making some of both for me. The flannelette does sound a lot softer but ill keep an eye out for any cheap terry towelling ones too.
Thanks again for your help! :)
