Not sure about when I was a baby.. but they smoked inside when I was a kid yes. They now smoke outside since having grandkids.

yes, and apparently because me and my sisters survived this gives them the right to completely disregard my request not to smoke while holding my baby

Yip, nowhere was off limits in our house.
I remember when I was little whenever my mum finished eating she'd light a fag, even with me and my sister still sitting there eating..

Yep - mum smoked while pregnant with me, smoked inside up until I was about 11 and smoked in the car until about the same time.

I've seen photos of ashtrays inside when I was little. My dad and other smokers did smoke around us as children.

Yes mine did. I was also taken to smoky bars and pubs, and mum would invite all her band mates over to jam and the place was so thick with smoke you could barely see.
I can rememeber going to ny gran's place and gran would strip me off, and re-wash all my clean clothes, because mum would do the ironing with a fag in her mouth and so the smell would be ironed into them.
It might seem horrible now, but you can't blame a previous generation for lack of knowledge. What we do to our kids these days may one day be seen as appalling by future generations. You can only work with the guidelines of your time and what you feel is right.

My parents didn't smoke inside when we were babies but when we were older kids they sure did - they would smoke at the dinner table.
Mum quit when I was around 10 and has never taken it up again.
When the grandkids came alone no one was allowed to smoke in their house ever and eventually my father who smoked around 60 a day quit and has stayed away from them for over 3 years - now I just have to get rid of my nasty habit.
Oh and I have never smoked inside around my children - only ever outside.

Dad would smoke in the house and the car:barf: I have always hated the smell of smoke (even when I did smoke)
Remember they didn't have all the ads and information we get now.

Yeah, Dad smoked wherever and whenever he wanted regardless of us.
I blame his smoking for a lot of my health issues, and it's certainly the reason why he died at 68, never got to see me get married, and will never meet his soon to be born grandson
NOBODY will be smoking anywhere near my boy, that's for sure.

my parents were inside smokers. i always said i wouldnt ever smoke because i hated the smell of it so much. however i am a smoker and i do still hate the smoke. i have tried to quit so much however quitting absolutely messes me up big time and i cant put everyone through that esp with the mistakes i make with work, how moody i am. quitting is best done when i am on holidays which wont be until xmas sometime but even then, i am not sure i will be successful or not.
i didnt smoke inside when coop was with me, however i have now been smoking inside but i am starting to go back outside as i dont want my house to reek of smoke(so glad i never bring coop back home, we are always out doing stuff)

Yes they did. It was back in the early 80s so they (and many other people) probably didn't know all the health risks and all that about passive smoking. My dad still smokes now (my mum passed away, not from smoking, when I was younger) and he doesn't smoke in the house or inside anywhere (especially around kids) any more.

Same here. My Dad is 58 and still with us although he had two very big heart attacks at the beginning of this year.
My parents smoked in the house and in the car when I was young. I remember HATING it and complaining all the time. My Dad didn't care though and did whatever he wanted regardless of how others felt about it.
This is going back 30 years so times were a little different then to now. (I was never put in a carseat, I was in a basinet that had a seatbelt through the straps!)

Dad used to smoke around us 3 kids when we were growing up so I imagine he was still doing it when we were babies too. I used to hate it when he'd light up in the car :(:barf:
I once had a teacher in grade 1 light up right next to me in a classroom ....admittedly she did say this is bad for you.

Yup! Right up until I was 7 years old when my mum quit. Weird thing was, is that I developed a mysterious cough at about 2 years that doctors had not answer for. They ended up telling my mother that I must have been putting it on for attention....
The mysterious cough stopped when I was about 8 yrs....mum stopped smoking when I was 7.
Thanks to my mummy nobody smoked in our home:) Love my mum and her strict fussiness:D

Ofcourse they did, that was the times unfortunately!
My Uncle told me that when I was born (30 years ago) he went to visit my mum in hospital and there were ashtrays next to the beds, and you could smoke in the wards next to all the babies!
I grew up with my whole family smoking inside. And we were told we were rude if we complained. Especially my nana, who is still a heavy smoker today aged 72. She wonders why I havent taken my 5 month old around to see her yet, well it is because of the smoke. It was alright to call us rude when we were kids about complaining about it. Well, now this is my kid and I make the decisions. What goes around comes around *shrug*

Yes, my mum smoked while she was pregnant with me, all during ourchildhood, and only started smoking outside since having grandchildren. She still smoked in the car untill they got a brand new one last year.
When I was a child I suffered terribly and was hospitalised with bronchitis, and asthma many many times.

Yes my parents smoked inside when we were kids.
I think 98% of people would have, they just didn't know any better back then.
Yes, in the house and in the car. It was normal back then though..even in shopping centres etc
I am painting mum's house atm (the same house we lived in growing up...so it's 30 yrs old) and the roof & walls are stained yellow.
She wont smoke in the house or her car anymore :yelclap:

No, My father never smokes. He don't like if any one smoke near by a child.

My Dad did. Mum never smoked.
I remember choking on cigarette smoke in the car too.
I think I was about 10 or something when he finally started to do it outside.

Yes my parents smoked inside, I remember mum smoking in at sizzlers seems so very strange to think about it now.
Well my parents didn't smoke but no one was ever allowed to smoke inside. We even had a no smoking sign on the front door.
My maternal grandparent's both smoked. My Nana gave up smoking when pregnant with her first child (not knowing there were health risks for sure she just guessed it probably wasn't good for the baby) and my grandfather never smoked inside, or when people were eating.
DH's mother is a completely different story and even now she can't wait to build her new house so she can smoke inside again :barf: DH can do what he likes but he knows that neither me or the kids will be stepping foot inside her house when she does.

 both my parents did.
My mother gave up when I was about 10 (so did Dad for a short time). We then moved house and Dad started smoking around us again (he snuck around before that) and he then only smoked outside.

Yes, both my parents smoked inside when both me and my 13 y.o sister were babies. Mum smoked through both pregnancies, resulting in me being low birth weight, barely 5 pounds at 42 weeks and severe pre-eclampsia with my sister resulting in her being born 5 weeks prem at 3 pound 10 ounces. In the car too.
I would have thought that after watching Dad's father suffer for 5 months with primary lung cancer they both would have quit, but no. They are away at the moment in a national park MILES from the closest shop going cold turkey. I hope when they get back, they will have given them up for good.
My parents smoking has been put down to my permanently poor lung function and asthma.
At least my parents are now respectful enough when they come visit me and DH they go outside to smoke. No-one will smoke around our babies..........
I can't stand the smell. When DH and I go to visit, EVERY piece of clothing goes straight in the wash when we get home.
My dad was a smoker but because my mum never smoked he wasn't allowed to smoke inside the house or in the car.

I had those mysterious coughs, throat infections and breathing difficulties too. I was on medication all the time. What were they thinking??? I remember there being a smoke haze in the lounge room (both my parents smoked) and one time Dad set fire to the front room by accident. Dad was a terrible smoker, he would have a lit cigarette going in 2 different rooms at a time because he would forget he already had one going.

Same here. What were they thinking? Not much I'd say.
It is true that back in the 80's there was not as much information out there on how bad smoking was - but anyone who couldn't see the damage they were doing to themselves and their family was deluding themselves.
What stuns me even more is the people who continue to smoke now or worse BEGIN smoking, when there IS all this information available on how bad it is.

yup, my chore was to empty the ashtray. Noice.
 I can't believe these poll results. My parents didn't smoke, nor did any of my friends parents except for one mother who always smoked outside.

oh i just seen this thread, i answered in another one, so ill try cut my response to this one short :D
Yep, my dad smoked for many years, and around all 6 of us kids. Im the 5th one, and had two asthma attacks as a kid. On the second one is when dad realised he was doing wrong, and quit just like that.. He now has emphasima, and over the past 4yrs has been on his death bed at least 3times.
My dh used to smoke, but since planning our family, he quit, as i apointed out that i dont want our kids to see him as i know see my dad.
Not only is it a gross habit, but health wise we need to be around as long as possible for our kids.

Yes indeed. However my mother gave up during the mid 80s when she came to understand the risks and was helped when her work (she was a manager for what was then a government agency) gave out Quit Smoking kits which included relaxation tapes, quit smoking chewing gum etc etc.
So for a lot of people here the effects would have been well advertised and known when they were children

Yep! both parents would smoke in the house, i was in hospital at LEAST 4 times a year. one time they nearly los me... the doc said if you don't stop smoking in the house she will die...
well did they stop?? nope but thankfully iam still here.
I just had a big fight with my mother, i asked her if she could please stop smoking in her house because i just can't breathe, and i want her to she her grandchild when he is born.
You want to know what she said to that?? LMFAO it's to cold to smoke outside and i have asthma ill get sick!!!!!! is she for real??
I honestly don't think she will she much of me or her grandchild and it's a shame:no: but i will not have him around smoke not after what i went thru as a child.
And guess what? now that im not around smoke my asthma is so much better i hardly have to take meds for it and i haven't been in hospital since i lived at home.

wow i cant beleive some of these answers, i made this thread because as i said, i noticed ashtrays in some old photos... i asked mum about it yesterday (who still smokes) she was shaking her her head at herself, she said it was so normal it was never even given a thought. she feels so guilty for it, she started wondering if it was just her..so i showed her the poll. she was also abit shocked.
someone said they had ashtrays next to the hospital beds 30 years ago.. crazy..
yep in the back part of the house which was kind of like an enclosed pack porch and in the car.. ew..
both have completely quit smoking now. yay for them!
Yep. When my mum was in hospy after having me, the midwives would bring me to her every 4 hours to breastfeed (from the nursery) and bring an ashtray so she could smoke while feeding to relax
yes, and apparently because me and my sisters survived this gives them the right to completely disregard my request not to smoke while holding my baby
You should take your baby off them if they smoke whilst holding her. They probably didn't know the risks in their day, but they do now and what their doing is just pig ignorant.
