My doctor had been telling me for weeks that he would be surprised if i made it to the end of the week with my baby. Every week came and went with no signs of bubs though! 6 days after my due date, i was to be induced. My doctor tried to break my waters, but baby's heart rate dropped to 80 bpm so he stopped doing that! the scratching really hurt and i had midwife and my partner holding my shoulders to make sure i didnt wriggle up the bed away from him! Once bubs heart rate came back up, they decided to try the gel. With my first contraction, my waters broke. I thought i was wetting myself but i couldnt stop it. Doc told me that baby would be out by midnight, so i started walking around, swinging my hips and doing everything i could to speed things up. Midnight came and went with no signs of baby. I had one midwife try convince me to have the pethedine so i could get some sleep, i kept turning her down until i'd had another internal and discovered i was only about 3 1/2 cm dilated. I reluctantly agreed when the next midwife asked me (i went through 6 midwives by the time my baby was born!). The pethedine didnt take away the pain, it just made me so tired i didnt care! I got 2 hours sleep, and my contractions, which had been at 5 minute intervals from the beginning, had changed a little. They had stopped being in my belly and started hurting my hips, which i thought was normal. I continued walking and showering, breakfast came and went, lunchtime came and went, and my baby still showed no signs of coming out! Sometime after lunch, i was still only around 5cm dilated, and my doc suggested i have the epidural as the pain in my hips was getting worse. I am convinced i could have managed fine without pain relief if the pain wasnt in my hips, that was awful but explained later. The epidural didnt hurt at all, but despite my efforts of laying on one side, then the other, it refused to numb my right side. I had a midwifery student and a medical student in the room with me, and they were chatting and laughing loudly with each other so i decided to moan louder to try and drown them out or shut them up... (it didnt really work). The baby's heart rate gradually kept rising, but i wasnt really concerned, the midwives didnt seem too concerned, neither did my doctor, who was neglecting his clinic duties as i now know. When bubs heart rate reached 173, things didnt seem quite right, so my doc grabbed the ventousse, luckily i was fully dilated. It kept coming off of bubs head and they only had 15 minutes to get the little critter out. At around the 13 minute mark, baby came out. My partner told me he saw her little face pop out, she opened her eyes, went cross eyes and then went back to sleep... My doc and i were both surprised that she made a posterior appearance. our beautiful little girl was born 26 hours after i was induced! and sitting here looking at her smiling at me, it was all worth it! I would do it all again in a second, but thankfully, its unlikely it will be a repeat of this one!:)
