View Full Version : Leaking nappies!

All of my nappies seem to be wicking up the back and around the legs and it's driving me crazy! Is it something i'm doing wrong or do all mcn's do this?

I've made sure that they're tight enough (although my itti's are slightly loose around the legs) and that there is nothing accidentally tucked into the nappy, but it's still happening. The nappy itself doesn't seem full, besides it happens on the first wetting.

Any ideas what it could be?

Do you have a big wetter ... as in doing a big wee all at once, rather than lots of little ones?

If you do the bamboo might not be able to soak up the fluid quick enough and it's leaking out.

A way to combat this is to have a layer of microfibre in the nappy (not against bubs skin) to quickly draw the wetness away and give the bamboo a chance to soak up the fluid.

how long have you had the nappies for and have you recently changed washing powders? ALL of my 70+ stash are now useless and leaking because I used a supposedly eco friendly blah blah liquid and now I have to strip wash the lot!

Maybe a strip wash will help?!

I guess he does tend to do a lot of wee at once and quite a bit too, but I wouldn't have thought that a 8 week old baby could produce enough at once to out wet the bamboo.

When I put him to bed last night, I had him in a GK with a bamboo and a microfibre insert, but when I went to take him in with me about 3 hours later his whole back was soaked as was where he was laying. Although the GK is very bulky on him I checked the fit on him again this morning and it is quite tight, so no gaping anywhere that I could see.

How would the microfibre help absorb it quicker? Also, would hemp be better than bamboo? I think I have a couple of hemp ones somewhere.

I've got him in a jamtots which he's been wearing for about 2 hours now, so I guess i'll see how it held up when he wakes. He'd only been in it for about 15mins when I thought I felt a suspicious damp patch, i'm hoping it was just my imagination though! :fingerscrossed:

I am using an eco washing powder, so maybe it is that. I tried a strip wash last week and it didn't seem to make much difference, but I went back to using the same powder as before so I might give that another go.

Oh and after the leak last night, I put him in a disposable because I didn't wan't to fiddle around with him while he was still half asleep and guess what... it leaked EVERYWHERE! :hair:

Turn's out the whole packet of nappies were faulty down the back which meant that I got to wake up to a lovely (and did I mention GIGANTIC) ocean of wee and poo! :hissy:

I'm so frustrated! I had the best response all typed out, pressed submit and then I couldn't access Bub Hub.
Argh!:hair:

Anyway what I wanted to say was...

Have you tried a mini bamboo or mini microfibre booster in your itti? My DS wears ittis all the time and they are a little loose around the legs but they only leak every now and then for us. After DS's morning feed I add a mini bamboo booster. Helps heaps.

Microfibe is super absorbent and because it is so thirsty it can dry the skin out. So you have to be careful if it is up against bub's skin. It sucks the moisture in really quickly so works really well for big wetters. However it is prone to compression leaks. Which is why you need to team it up with a really absorbent material such as bamboo. Bamboo is super absorbent but can take more time to absorb it. It will suck up any liquid that leaks out of the microfibre.

For a night time nappy I strongly recommend investing in a Bamboo Sandman Night nappy. They are super absorbent and recommended for even the heaviest wetters. You will need a cover with it though.

HTH :)

I have found bamboo better than hemp. Have all your nappies been washed at least 3 or 4 times? Just wondering if they are not quite at full absorbency. It does seem strange that you are having trouble with all your nappies not just one particular type.

How much washing powder are you using in each wash - you don't need very much. You could even try no washing powder at all - if they are getting plenty of sun then no powder shouldn't be an issue. I use an eco powder and it has never been a problem. When I had a bulk lot of new nappies to wash I put them in the machine on the longest cycle (without any washing powder) for 3 washes without drying in between, but even then found that it would take a couple more wash and wears before they were at their best.

Sorry, am probably not much help! Hope you can figure out the problem. I use ittis for day time and BBH Magicalls for night (boosted with an extra trifold) and have very rarely had a leak night or day.

Goodluck

The only thing i can think of (that hasnt been said) is that maybe the bamboo isnt at Max absorbency yet (can take 10+washes). Boosters are fantastic. I have 2 boys and i find that their nappies are drenched at the front, and sometimes leak, while still being dry at the back. a booster positioned towards the front of the nappy would make the nappy more absorbent, and catch the extra wee that would have leaked.

He could also be going through a groath spurt, and peeing more than normal too.

Hang in there though, it does get easier.

I feel so sorry for u having to deal with so much leaking poo and wee, esp at night. Some bubs are just big weers, just cram as much absorbent stuff in the pocket of the GK as possible- maybe even do 2 inserts at once.

Ok, so forgive me if you already know this.. but one thing I didnt know till WEEKS after I'd had my son was that with little boys.. you have to make sure that when you put the nappy on that their "private bits" are pointing down! LOL

I didnt know that lovely bit of info for weeks like I said and was wondering why on earth his back would end up soaking wet at night , it was cuz his "private bit" was pointing up and wee would just run straight down then out the top of his nappy at the back

Trust me, I know the feeling!

Happy2be3 - Should it be pointing up or down? If it's pointing up I can understand it leaking, but how would it leak out the back? Wouldn't it leak out the front? It makes sense though when I think about it. :detective:

TBH I haven't really paid much attention to which way it's pointing, I have enough trouble getting a nappy on him as it is! He gets so worked up about having his nappy changed. Not grizzly, but frantic and it takes ages to settle him down again, so much so that I try to change him while he's on my lap. I was wondering why his nappy's were alway wet at the back opposed to the front. Men eh? SO much more complicated!

I think I might have to invest in a proper night nappy because even with just the one insert in his GK he can't lie on his back without rolling onto his side. It's quite a funny sight actually!

I'm pretty sure that most of my nappies would've been washed at least 8 times by now. I did another strip wash today followed by 2 more washes just to make sure it wasn't that they weren't at their max. :fingerscrossed: It helps!

I've got a feeling that he's just a really heavy wetter. If he pee's without a nappy on it just keeps coming and coming! I swear i've never seen a baby pee so much! How can something so little produce so much and still not be putting on heaps of weight? I guess i'll just have to get used to a big cloth bum!

His "bits" should be pointing straight down so that when he wees all the wee shoots onto the the absorbent part of the nappy.. if it is pointing up against his body then the wee will tend to run down (due to gravity) around his belly and then that means it will leak out the back (if he's lying on his back to sleep).. hope you get what I mean...

Such a small bit of info but once the home nurse pointed it out to me I was like Ahhhh *light bulb moment* LOL.
