View Full Version : Gah! She's trying to throttle herself!

My almost-three-year-old has a fascination with putting things around her neck. Necklaces, strings, cables, ties, whatever...

I keep telling her she shouldn't put stuff around her neck, that it's dangerous, that it could stop her from being able to breathe (and also that she should NEVER put ano\ything round someone else's neck ... like her little baby sister for instance)

So I go into her room the other morning, and she's woken up before me and got one of her dad's ties which she's wrapped about eight times round her neck (quite gently, but still...) and cheerfully announced to me "Mummy, I want to not breathe!"

So, anyway, I unwrapped the tie from around her neck and explained (again!) quite calmly how she mustn't do that, that it was dangerous, but I'm still a bit freaked out about it, and I don't know if I'm handling it right. I don't want to make a big deal out of it, because I don't want her doing it to get a rise out of me, but I'm really worried that she doesn't understand how dangerous it could be if she was jumping around and got caught on something or anything like that.

Anyone else have this issue? What to do?!

Can't help you with what to do as we have the same problem with our 2 1/2 year old who also likes putting plastic bags over her head as well.

The other day my DD (21 months) went as far as putting both hands around her own neck and squeezing until she went red in the face and stopped breathing!! I have absolutely no idea why and she just kept smirking at me the whole time she was doing it.

I have an unusual child.

It's a wonder any of them live to adulthood, isn't it!
