As you know when you fall pregnant it is best to avoid certain foods which have a higher risk to listeria like cold meats, soft cheeses, hot takeaway chooks etc..

When I was pregnant with DS#1 I avoided the cold meats totally and was at a routine antenatal check up 2 weeks before my EDD when the midwife advised I start eating ham sandwiches to help with my iron deficiency  Wish they had of told me that earlier!

With this pregnancy I am careful of what I eat but I don't totally avoid all of these food either.

What do you feel about these types of food? Do you still eat these foods while pregnant occasionally?

:hugs:

I have got a low Iron levels always and when I'm pregnant I have to take Iron tablets, also take them with Vitamin C because it helps absorb the iron. I personally dont eat the cold hams and the mouldy cheeses. I would say eat cheese still just the standard tasty cheese and you are supposed to have 30g of dairy when preggers a day so cheese is an easy and yummy.

Also I eat well done red meats especially steaks yummmm.... and red meat brings up your iron levels faster
oh now I'm hungry :o

:D I must admit I couldn't turn away the platter of assorted soft cheeses either at my work team meetings when I was preg with DS#1 - no health probs

I'm so sorry to hear that bronny-jane :(

I guess you just have to be very careful don't you :fingerscrossed: Fresh is always BEST. I ate these things in the later part of my pregnancy. There are a lot of different nationalities who eat these sorts of foods - salami, cold meats, cheeses etc as it's part of their lifestyle.

My sister went into early labour (about 23 weeks) and the doctor told her that it was because of too much soft cheese (brie and camembert). They managed to stop hers and my niece is fine now (as fine as a 13 year old girl can be anyway).

I also avoided soft serve icecream - has the same listeria problem as the soft cheese. no chocolate sundaes

:hugs: that is terrible, though it does seem from the literature on soft cheeses that it is listeria, which I am pretty sure you would know you have. I don't think you hurt your baby, but it is always easy to blame ourselves for what is sometimes a devastating but natural thing.

The only other main foods I have been warned off (midwife mum has been collecting data for years ) is hotdogs - a big no no apparently, and Aspartame artificial sweetener. I think it is the one in Diet Coke which sucks, cause I would happily live on the stuff.

The other thing is to keep up the Omega-3s to ensure good eyesight and behaviour once born

It is a bit of a balancing act isn't it?
You hear so many differing theories, some even say these things are good to build up a tolerance, like letting kids get dirty and catch colds. *sigh*

I've avoided all soft cheeses and soft serve icecreams and cold meats - I just didn't want to risk it. I've been taking preggo tablets with iron in them anyway....go with the red meat idea for iron.

Although, I have to admit when I was getting over morning sickness, I needed the grease in pizza and had a few with ham on it - my dr's info sheet says that as long as it's well cooked, the bacteria is killed off - it's just when it's cold you have to be careful. For that reason I started having some lean bacon every now and then cause you could cook it.

Yep listeria is killed when its cooked at above 70degrees if I remember correctly. So when you order takeout, just heat it up in the oven til its sizzling and it should be fine.

Doesnt really help me with my feta craving though :D

God I know - I was desperately craving turkish gozleme with feta and spinach in the first few months - I didn't actually realise that feta was classed as a 'soft cheese'. My ob didn't seem too concerned though - he said as long as it is pasteurised (who knows from the take away place) and because it was heated, it shouldn't be too bad...bubs is still here anyway. But I'd still avoid it all if you can :)

hello

the foods I have avoided are raw fish, prawns, oysters, soft cheeses (but I have been told feta is fine as its made with pasteurized milk), salami, I cook my eggs until they are hard, and I cook my red meat really well.....I eat ham and have not been told otherwise (but I make sure its leg ham and eat it within a day or two)

its overwhelming the info that is out there, but I use my common sense and hopefully all will be fine.....

our Mums ate everything and this info wasn't out then, and we are fine!

take care
