I have seen this quite regularly lately

People driving with small dogs on their laps with their heads out the window...

Is this dangerous? My thought is that it would be very distracting for a driver to have a little dog on their laps? :)

Yes of course it's dangerous and if someone behind them runs up their bum guess where little doggie goes through the window.
All dogs should be in the back with the dog seat belt on or in accident the animal becomes a missile that could kill anyone in the car.
This makes me mad (not as mad as when I see unrestrained kids though)

That is extremely dangerous! For the dog and the driver. You can buy car restraints for dogs. They are a harness that the dog wears with a strap which you can thread the set belt through . I always use it when driving with my dog.

Very dangerous and will be illegal as of Monday (In QLD anyway)

Its a distraction, just as bad as mobiles ect....

Just pain dumb really.

Dog restraints are the way to go - I had little fluffy lap dogs and without either someone holding them (though in an accident the dog becomes a missile in the car and will not only be killed itself, but could kill other passengers!!!) they would climb all over the car, so dog restraints in the back seat, even if they howl and carry on, they'll get used to it

Oh really.... Im in Qld!

Just lately I have seen this a few times but what got me to ask this question was this morning when I dropped my DD1 at school a lady coming in the other direction to me was driving along in a school zone with a King Charles hanging half its body out of the drivers window!

It would never occur to me to let a dog on my lap while driving :no:

wow, what a silly silly thing to do! i would never do that. i don't have a dog haha, but i still wouldn't do if i did! that seems really dangerous, and like a pp said, something about the dog being a missile in an accident. i didnt even think about that, but yeh, if they crashed, that dog could go anywhere and hurt the people in the car!

oh dear....some people just don't think do they??

My dogs just ride in the back of the car, not in restraints, been doing it for years no problems, they just sit there, dont even try to jump in the front or climb on my lap.

I also attend a obenience club and 90% of them also dont use restraints.

Why does it take putting a law in place to make people realise this is a dangerous and just plain stupid thing to do.....

Like the big road signs put up in the last year that there will (and now has) be a fine if you smoke with children in the car. Why?!!!

I think it's ridiculous.

We have a special harness with a clip that attaches to the seatbelt. It can also be used with a leash and then becomes a walking harness.

Best $ spent as it can be used even if all the seats are taken by human bums!

yes it is distracting, which makes it not only dangerous for other drivers or pedestrians out there, but where do they think that dog is going to go if they were ever to have some sort of an accident  umm sure as hell wont be sitting on their lap still!

(i think the same in regards to having a dog in the car at all, backseat or boots, without a harness of some sort attached to a seat belt)

Silly really. Just silly!

I pretty much agree with everyone else in this thread that it's not only dangerous and stupid but you can't really love your dog that much if you're prepared to risk its safety like that. Our dogs sit in the back with doggy seatbelts on, and they have been taught to stay seated and not wriggle so that they are safe. They're very big dogs anyway, and having one of them on my lap would mean that I couldn't see through the windscreen!
