View Full Version : Weird question... Does cat de-sexing always work?
The first time our kitty went on heat we had her de-sexed, but the next year around the same time we had nextdoor's male cat at the backdoor every day. He disappeared over the next ten months or so but has come back the same time this year. She is also calling as if she is on heat  So as stupid as this sounds is it possible that she could still be on heat?

I imagine they could fail just like a humans.

Not sure if she could just get that way sometimes, but with cat desexing they actually remove all their parts, not like humans. So she can't get pregnant, she'd have no ovaries or anything.
Clearly I'm no expert  but could they have left tissue or an ovary behind or something?

Well, if they have, you could make them responsible for any kittens that come of it. It's so expensive desexing, you'd hope they would do it right, they are doctors after all.
Oh she is an indoor cat so no worries about kittens, though she has been super keen on escaping to the great outdoors this last week or so :detective:
We had a very bad experience with the vet who did her op, I would never go back there. He said she the most vicious cat he'd ever seen  She's no angel granted, but she's not that bad. She was emotionally scarred after that vet visit too. Never ever wanted to go in the car again for fear of going to the vet again I believe. This from a cat who calmly sat on my lap in the car for ten hours :(

Makes you wonder what happened at the vets... :/
Vets actually remove the whole lot. They cut through the abdomen and cut off each ovary and stitch the opening, they do both ovaries, remove them and throw them in the bin. Your kitty should still have a womb but no eggs, she is still a female cat, she still has female hormones (she feels like she is on heat, its an animal thing) but she CANNOT fall pregnant. Unless the vets did a tubal ligation  and charged you $250 for it, then you wont have kitties. I used to be a vet assistant and sat and watched many many many procedures like this, they do the same thing every time. Dont be worried :)

I often wonder that with our cat, he was desexed but he still goes out looking for fights with other male cats... males eh

That's a male thing alright
My dog was desexed at 4 months as he had undescended testicles that were becoming cancerous, yet he still went on to hump everything in sight! My puppy will be done at 6 months, has no problems and isn't humping things yet. Some things can be put down to them being male

That reminds me, our old cat used to hump things  there was this old stuffed dog toy that he used to have a go at :laughing: it went outside after that, yuck (the toy I mean)

I'd think it'd be pretty hard for it to not work... it's not like with humans where bits and pieces are tied together in most cases...
It's a hysterectomy for the females and castration for the males.

I am a vetnurse sterilising a cat is the same as you or i having a full hysterectomy, the uterus and ovaries are removed, some cats that are fine at home become exrremely vicous at the vet, if you ahve never had to try handle an aggressive cat it is hard to understand hoe dangerous it is, cats can do alot of damage when they go nuts, i am lucky that I ahve enver been badly injured but know many nurses that have, i would rather deal with a nasty dog than a nasty cat, i am sorry your cat was traumatised but it is hard to say what happened if you were not there, we do our best but if a cat goes feral we have to put the safety of the staff first.
My dad got our cat de-sexed. He thought it was a girl but it wa a boy. So poor Podgy had his balls cut off  he was the best cat ever though :D
