Hi I haven't posted a thread in a while but I thought this would be an experience that I could share with you all even though it was a heart stopping emotional day for myself!

My DD3 has had many allergies during her 23months of life her main allergy has been dairy and soy, but now there is a possibility of her having a penicillin allergy!

Anyway it starts with her having tosilitis she was given Alphamox to take for 5 days but it wasn't enough to fight the infection as she came down ill 3 days after finishing the Alphamox, I took her to the dr to discover she now had a buldging ear drum and tosilitis so dr prescribe her Clamoxyl Duo (a stronger medication) to take for a further 5 to 7 days, on day 5 of taking Clamoxyl DD3 was covered head to toe in a very angry rash, I took her to the hospital and they had said she has had a severe reaction to the medication weather it be 1 or both of them is not clear, after a while we were sent home with a letter to see our GP, the following day (being today) after a very sleepless night and many high temps and lots if itchiness DD3 started to what I thought was going to be vomitting was difficulty in breathing it was the most terrifying moment of my life to see my baby girl struggle to take a breathe!
I took her back to emergency and dr gave her prednozole (sp??) which is a steriod, her airways had been comprimised which if delt with correctly the day before would have never happened.

Just wanted to share this with you all as until now DD had been ok with these meds.

I would like to also know if there are any others out there who have had the simular or same thing happen to them and if needed to be tested do they test like they test for allergies or is it a different way of testing?

Thanks for sharing.........glad she is OK now :hugs:

I also have an allergic bub (18 months) who currently has tonsilitis with a bulging ear from all the fluid behind it. He was put on Amoxil 2 days ago but he's continuing to have high temperatures.

If we have to get him onto a different penicillin as well............I'll keep a very close eye on him

Both of my children are allergic to penicillan.

We have a huge family history of it so doctors aren't bothering to do tests - the family history plus sighted reactions has confirmed it for them.

My neice had the worst - she was on something (can't remember now) and by the time we got her to a second doctor she was one dose away from dying they said - was a very sick little girl.

I was lucky in that as soon as a rash appeared after the first dose with my kids I knew what it was.

Yes they give the prednisone to counteract the reaction but they will also prescribe this for my children when they have chest infections - its not one I like them to have though.

For tonsillitis and other things we get rhulide (sp) - never had to give that to my 1 year old but my son has it and honestly it works really fast.

I think the trick to kids with penicillan allergy is only get antibiotics when absolutly neccessary as there aren't as many they can have they will build up and immunity to the ones they can.

I can honestly say my kids have had only a handful of antibiotics in their life - we generally try and heal the natural way - lots of good food vitamins and fresh juices - I know it sounds crazy but they get better so fast

My parents allergies didn't start until they were alot older so I refuse to take antibiotics unless I am staying with someone - my dad collapsed with his first reaction and stopped breathing - I really don't want this to happen to me when I am home with 2 kids alone.

Hi there,

Saw our GP on Tuesday and its been confirmed she has a penicillin allergy! he didnt bother to do tests as she has a allergy history plus saw the photo's i took and from what i told him, so he said that it would be cruel to put her through it again.
