No comments from Anti-Circers needed thanks.
Morning all. I'm due to have a son in December. My husband is circumcised, and assumed our son would be done simply because he is. I didn't think this was a good enough reason, so started researching.
I've read countless threads on this forum on the subject as well as many medical sites etc. I'm embarrassed to say I let the over emotional anti-circers get to me for a while there, and I HAD pretty much decided NOT to get it done, and told my husband so. He was not very happy with that decision, but I think he respected it and didn't plan on going around me, seeing as though he hasn't done any research on the subject himself.
I have continued reading however, and the more stories I read about infants/toddlers/children and even adults needing to be circed due to constant infections or tight foreskins etc is freaking me out, and my opinion is starting to sway.
But what totally freaks me out about having this done, is the risk or permanent disfigurement if too much is taken or it is done poorly. So if I am truly going to consider this as an option, I need to find myself a kick *** doctor, who's done a million and one of these with no issues.
Also, have any of you had your boys done, or know of anyone who has had their boy done, and it HAS been done badly? It freaks me out that I'm considering removing a healthy part of my boys body just because it MAY cause an issue. But then I know if it does cause an issue I'll regret it. But if he ends up mutilated by a surgery gone wrong, I could hardly live with the guilt.
Ok so help. Lol. Thanks :)

Hi Cazzie
My son want be getting the cut done. But I went to a doctor recently who cut my son's tongue tie. I was pretty sure I recognised him from a TV show where he was doing the circumcision procedure.
It was pretty funny exactly. When we went in to get his tongue done, the doctor asked me to take off his nappy. I replied, "we're not getting that done" and he said "I was wondering why it was taking you so long to take off the nappy".
His name is Dr Terry Russell at MacGregor.
On the day we went he seemed to be doing alot. He defintely helped my son with his tongue.
Good luck deciding.

Oh ok I didnt know what suburb it was in! You wouldnt have the details ect if so could you pm them to me.

Just responding to this part.
I know of a boy who was left severely brain damaged after his circ gone wrong. He was a RIC baby, they stuffed up and had to correct it. They couldn't correct it until he was a bit older (still a baby) and they completely screwed up with the type of anaesthetic he was given and was left a vegetable.
The details on it are sketchy because I was a child when being told the story (I asked what was 'wrong' with the boy across the road) but I have never forgotten the story.
I'm not telling you to scare you....a rare case I'm sure. I have read lots of stories on circ's gone wrong but don't of anyone specifically which is why I'm only telling that story.
I am anti RIC, but I didn't come in here to get you to change your mind. Just came in to tell you of the boy that I do know of. It's something for you to weigh up in your mind. Do you take the small risk of the procedure going wrong (I think there is a 1% death statistic on RIC), or do you take the risk of him needing it done for medical reasons later on.
Good luck with your choice and I hope that if you do go ahead with the procedure it is complication free your DS.
I think there is a 1% death statistic on RIC
I'm sure no one needs to be told that this is absolutely nowhere near the truth. The last death in Australia due to circumcision was in 1979. You can do the math.
I think it is best to talk to the doctor you are getting to perform it. He/she should be able to give you an idea of the complication rate based on the method that they are using. It is very small - and if there is, it is generally only a minor complication (ie. bleeding, infection) that heals 100%.
Good luck.

Terry Russell is excellent! He has done my older son, will be doin my near three yr old at end of this month and will be doing my new bub next yr! He has done many of my frinds bubs. I never knew he did anything excpet circ so good to know he does tounge tie etc....
Before going to Dr. RUSSELL, just a bit of info on the "plastibell" technique he uses. The foreskin is first freed from the head of the penis, (in babies it is usually fused to the penis head ) then slit to the base of the penis head. A plastic ring is placed over the penis head and string is tightened just below the slit in the foreskin.
Scissors are used to cut off the foreskin in front of the string. What remains of the foreskin drop off after about a week as it has no bolood circulation. The circumcision scar will be close to the base of the penis head.
What you might think about is that this method of circumcision removes most of the sensitive inner layer of the foreskin. This method removes eronenous tissue which will reduce sexual pleasure down the track.
If you must circumcise your son I recommend the "traditional" technique, in which the foreskin is stretched forward and extra outer skin is removed. Most of the sensitive inner foreskin remains and is turned back on to the shaft of the penis. The scar will be further from the head of the penis.
Also I think the traditional method gives a better cosmetic result.

wow... thanks for that info bett.
more to think about now.
G'day
My son was circ at 6 weeks old, we're in far north nsw so im not help in regards to a doc. But it wasnt bad, I know exactly how you feel. I came very close to pulling the plug on the whole situation having read the anti-circers :hugs: But the more they posted the more i read.......eventually that changed my mind again. The doctor my son went to was very quick easily less than 10 minutes for the removal part, all up totalling 3 appointments (numbing cream, removeal and follow up 40 minutes later to make sure it wasnt bleeding too much). It was a little heart breaking to change his nappy :o I wasnt there when he was circ. But he was all healed within couple of weeks - i paniced over every small detail lol but thankfully i had the dr after hours phone number to call
Good luck which ever decision you make
