Brodie is 5 months now and for some reason i cant get passed the number 2 teats on avent bottles. (i think number 2 is meant for 1 - 3 months) and he wont take any other bottle.
if i use a number 3 or any other bottle he just thrashes his head around and grizzles. im over spending so much money on avent bottles! ( i live in a smallish town so they are $13 - $15 each!) and im always paranoid about losing them. im thinking bout trying the Heinz ones.
has anyone else had this problem? what should i do? :banghead:

my daughters wouldnt have any other bottles than avent too, but they r fantastic bottles-they apparently have less chance of your baby getting colic

Does it seem like he needs to go onto the number 3 teats? I used avent teats and bottles and didn't worry about the age thing. I just changed when I felt like my dd needed to.
My little one is 5 and a half months and I have had the same problem. I bought the #3 teat thinking that he should be ready to move onto it but I think the flow it too fast for him and he struggles to feed from it. He seems happy on the #2 teat so for the minute I'll just keep going on that. I was told by someone, or I might have read it somewhere, not sure, that the flow is correct for a bottle when you hold it upside down and a little of the liquid comes out but then stops and it shouldn't flow. When i hold the #3 teat upside down it just drips and drips out so when bubs sucks on it it must be coming out awful quickly!
I mainly breast feed with a formula bottle last thing at night so I might not be all that clued up on bottle feeding, so perhaps I am doing the wrong thing?? I would be interested ot hear what advice other people have on this one.

oh quick question though, what signs does your bub give when they are ready to move on? or do you just try it every now and again?

My dd started to muck around and not drink as much.Took her much longer too.
I would prob try every so often and see how he goes. It does take them a couple of bottles to get used to the quicker flow.
All the best.

I moved up to #3 teats when DD was about 5 months... she was fussing alot during a feed... the first half of the bottle she was fine then towards the end she would get grumpy.. she would spit the bottle out and start crying... but she was still hungry... so i thought maybe she was working to hard... tried the #3 teat and everything went back to normal... she is now almost 9 months and the #3 teat is still keeping her happy. I do have some Variable Flow teats but they are way to fast for her.
Maybe you could try him on the Variable Flow?? that way you dont have to keep buying new teats.
Hello,
My son Marty is about 5 1/2 months old now. I also bought the no. 3 teat when he passed the 3 month stage thinking he was ready move onto a faster teat.
But he wasn't ready. We actually move between the two teats. I mainly use teats no. 2 when dad is feeding him (dad thinks ds is drowning when using no. 3) or I go out so I ds doesn't get stressed if the milk comes out too fast when drinking in unfamiliar surroundings.
I periodically try the no. 3 teat when I am at home, one feed he drinks using the no. 3 no problem then the next feed he doesn't like it. It makes for a bit more washing up, but I let him decide how fast he wants the flow to allow him to drink his milk.
I have also tried the teats that have 3 markings on them which suppose to give different flow of milk depending on what mark is facing towards the babies nose. Marty really didn't like these but I haven't tried them recently so I might give them a go.

i use a #2 on my 11month old. we have the #1's that we still use occaisonally but she doesn't like the variable flow one as it is too fast. we use the variable one in her water bottle and the #2's for the formula. she was still using the #1's when she was 6 months old.
i think just progress as fast as your bubs needs.

My DD is 7months old (just over) and she is SITLL on number 2 teat.
Because eventually she had ot have thickened formula, After alot of money was spent we found otu she only took the formula from the Avent bottle (i think it was the way the teats were) . Because of the thickened we had to sue the fast flow teats #4.. now that she has been on prgoress, 4 is way to fast so we tried 2 and its great she loves it and never takes ages to finish..
I think its up to the baby..

Exactly the same for me!!! My DS is a year in 8 days but still uses #2. #3 is just too fast for him. I say use what your baby is comfortable with...you don't always have to follow the age that corresponds to the teat number. :)

Hmmm, my 7 month old DD is taking the #4 teat but sometimes stops to cough so we've moved her back to #3, however we find that she still does it a bit with that one too! I find that she doesn't do it at all with the Nuk teats though and she's on the 6-18 month teats.
Do that babies take a very long time to drink from #2 teats when their 6 month plus? DD only started on bottles when she was 6 months old...
I also find that DD drinks so much quicker from an Avent bottle than a Nuk bottle.

DD still finishes her bottles in 5-10 minutes
Question, the NUk Teats, are the ylike the dummies?? Because DD is on the Nuk dummies..and avent bottles..are they similar? lol

 Heather... Dakota is on Nuk dummies and avent teats aswell.. im not sure if nuk teats are the same as nuk dummies.. but one thing i know for sure is that some babies like to know the difference between their dummy teat and bottle teat IYKWIM. So changing teats once they have become use to what they've known from the begining might be a little hard and the baby may not accept it.

Hi Mummy2AlexandMary,
The Nuk teats are similar to the dummies. Not sure about swapping, as DD has refused a dummy since she was born and only started taking a bottle at 4 1/2 months (used to scream at the sight of a bottle and not in excitement either)! She takes both the Nuk and the Avent bottles at the moment.

If hes drinking fine with the number 2 teats I wouldnt worry about it just keep using thme!
DD1 is 12 months and still drinks from slow flow teats as anything else is too fast for her
DS had prem teats until he was about 6 months old and then moved on to slow flow until 10 months when I weaned him off bottles.
