View Full Version : 11mo Early Riser - ideas?
Hi there
I have an 11 month old DS who wakes 5 or 5.30 almost every morning for hte past 3 weeks :( . we have no idea what has changed and if he wakes this early in winter we have no idea how early he will wake in summer when its light!!
So is there anyone out there that has ideas how to combat the early wake?
Thanks heaps
Lisa
Me - 29
DH - 27
DS - 11 months
What time is he going to bed and is he sleeping through the night/waking during the night etc?
hi
He goes down at 7pm and sleeps through often but some nights wakes once or twice but we dont need to resettle him - he is good at doing that in the night, he would only cry for a few mins usually if that.
does that help?
thanks heaps
Lisa
Well, if he's going to bed at 7 and usually sleeping through and getting up at 5-5.30am, he is getting pretty much the sufficent sleep that he needs.
If he is waking up a couple of times during the night and resettling quickly, chances are that he's not fully awake and is still getting some good sleep.
I dont really have that much advice (My son is 19 months and I can cound how many times on one hand he has slept through the night) expect maybe moving his bedtime back another half and hour and see how you go.
Thanks for that - yeah i guess he is getting a good stretch of sleep and thats good but its not good for mama and dada that he wakes so early hey!
and his daysleeps are a tad random too. what does your dc do with day sleeps?
L
Well, when Wy was 11 months he would sleep for a maximum of an hour during the day. 1.5 hours if he was really tired and if I was luck enough LOL!
He sleeps anywhere between 2-2.5 hours most days now. He's 19 months old though so a bit more active than your DS :)
well its hard isnt it when so many people seem to have these babies that sleep like they have read all the books saying what they "should" do!! its nice to hear that your bub now has a good sleep in the day at least!
Ah yes, the whole "Babies should be..." sentence. I have heard that enough already
All bubbies are individuals. :)
We'll get them back when they are older when all they want to do is sleep LOL!

My DD also does this alot, she goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps right through as well. We usually hear from her between 5 and 6am - when it's still dark!
She has just moved into a big bed at the moment and this what we do with her:
1st time she wakes - go in and tuck her back under the blankets (hoping she's just cold) and leave.
Sometimes works and she goes back to sleep for an hour or so.
If she gets up we either close all the bedroom doors and the stair gate and let her loose in the confines of the hallway and her room, or we turn on her night light and tell her to play quitely in her room.
If bub is still in a cot the nightlight and a few quiet toys/books in the cot might work.
If this doesn't work one of us gets up :(
I just keep reminding myself "at least she isn't up all night, mornings I can deal with " :o
yeah we can t go in as soon as he sees us thats it - which is a shame!
Just a quesiton Emmylou... what date was your DD born? I noticed she's a Nov 2004 bub too  Wyatt's the 29th

Hi
I know what I am going to say sounds insane, but I have had to do it on a couple of occasions since first trying and it has worked every time.
The Baby Whisperer says to go in an hour before they normally wake, so about 4:00am - horrible i know! stir them, so maybe pick them up and move, like you were putting a blanket over them, or I just touch her hand till she moves around. This breaks the sleep cycle they are in and after about 3 days they should be sleeping about an hour extra.
Jessica was getting up at 5:00 in summer and it was driving me nuts. Then she dropped her morning sleep so needed to sleep longer.
I know it sounds crazy, but it worked for me. Jessica sleeps from about 6:30 till 6, then one sleep during the day, she is 15 months, I started this though when she was about 11 months.
Good luck

She's on the 18th :D
Excellent. It was certainly a hot month the month they were born LOL! It was a 40 + degree day here on the Coast the day Wyatt was born.

Have you tried just leaving her for 30mins or so and see if she goes back to sleep herself. Although this doesn't work with Wyatt I have heard it working with other kids esp when it's still dark. Also how dark is the bedroom. We put some extra blinds in Wyatt's room a few days ago and he is sleeping in longer on average now.
Hi Mel
When you started the new routine with your little one when 11 months what time did you do the one nap a day and how long did it last?

Hi Lisa
The one nap a day only started in the last 2 months or so, from about 14 months, she was getting up @ 6:00, so she is now stretched till about 6:30 and goes thru till about 12:30, have to say not always pleasant at about 11:00.
@ 11 months she was still having 2 sleeps, probably @ about 9:00 for about one hour then @ 1:00 for about 2 hours, then to bed @ 6:30. I can't remember the exact lengths of sleeps. Daytime sleeps can be a battle, but @ night she always is ready for bed. I tried keeping her up later, but it made no difference, so for my sanity that is why she goes down @ 6:30.
Good Luck
Mel
Hi there
I tried the one sleep today but it backfired! i stretched him out til 11.50am and he slept for just one hour. but i guess this could be normal process in the beginning stages of the transition to one nap? any thoughts?
