Hi girls,

I'm due in 2 weeks with my first child. I am booked in at Lismore base maternity and was wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with this hospital ?

A few people have looked shocked when I have told them I am going throught the public system, we fell pregnant only 2 months after getting married ( a lovely suprise ) but unfortunaltley without private health insurance.

I was really looking for other opinions on the having your baby in a public hospital ? How long did you stay?, Did you feel confident with the care offered ?

Thanks so much XXXXXXXXXX

I can't comment on the hospital but I can on public hospitals in general.

You will hear both good and bad reports about both public & private hospitals.

IMHO private hospitals are all about choosing an OB & getting a private room. For some women this is very important.

I gave birth in a public hospital & I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I had a vac assisted vaginal birth & stayed 5 nights - 3 nights in a 2 bed ward & 2 nights in a bonding room attached to the SCN so I was a patient for 3 nights, my son was for 5 nights.

The midwives were fantastic during my labour & it seriously did not matter one little bit that I hadn't met the OB that delivered my bubba until an hour or two before the birth.

I had major BFing issues & was offered help with every single BF by the team of midwives. If I was sleeping & he woke for fed they'd come and wake me & assist if I needed it.

The best bit was when I left there was nothing to pay & no claims to make.

I'm sure your experience will be a good one. No-one I know IRL who gave birth publicly has had anything particularly negative to say about the level of care.

Hello i can't give you my personal experience but im booked into casino hospital. A few people i know have had a baby in both casino and lismore and have said they would never go back to lismore, as the midwives were rude and don't really tell you whats going on as they are so busy, they also try to get you out as quickly as possible. But i have also heard that lismore is really good, so i guess it depends on what midwives you get, how busy they are etc etc... The only down fall of casino is you can't have an epidural there.
