View Full Version : Steroid injections...
Hi All
I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant with twinnies and have just had my first steroid injection... Just wondering how common it is to have these injections and if anyone experienced any side effects from them? I have to have my second jab tomorrow morning.
My OB has just moved my c-section forward from 4th November (36 weeks) to 23 October (just over 34 weeks) so I'm guessing this is why I have to have them. Unfortunately my OB isn't the chatty type, so he didn't explain much to me!
Thanks ladies.

I had them at 32weeks, but only because I was in labour! They stopped the labour, but I still had the second dose JIC, and managed to cook bubs until 35weeks. Is there a reason that you are having a c-section so early? 34weeks is too soon if you have a healthy pregnancy. Even if he isn't the chatty type, i'd be asking WHY so early and trying to get the date changed back until after the 36week mark....37+ is much better.

Hey Jodes,
How are you going? At my appt at 28.5 weeks, I was told that my twins were going to need to come out alot sooner as Twin B was showing a compromised blood flow through the umbilical cord - not too bad but enough for them to give me the steroid shots. I couldnt sleep and had night sweats from them for a few days. This was 2 weeks ago and the twins are still going fine but they still dont think I will make it to 32 weeks. I am 30.5 weeks now.
I agree with charlis mum and would push for why you need to have these babies so early. Every day they are in you could possibly mean less time in NICU or Special Care.
Also the steriod injections only last 7-10 days and need to be repeated. Mine will be administered when I get admitted as they are monitoring me through ultrasounds and CTGs every 2 days now.
Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Wow your just one week behind me:yelclap:
I had my doc appt today and was told my boy aint putting on as much weight as he "normally" does so there a bit concerned that he may be in distress, anyway they asked me if i had these injections and i said no so he went and asked his boss and they said there not to concerned after 33 weeks because the babies should do ok without it:confused:they also want to induce me at 36 weeks. My goal is to get to 34 weeks coz im having alot of pain in me back lately just hope its not preterm labour.Hmmm wonder why your having bubs at 34weeks?
Hi everyone :)
thanks for your replies - I appreciate you all sharing your stories with me... I guess I'm a bit of a worrywart and don't particularly like taking things unless I know exactly what they're for. I'm lots more informed now and have finished my shots (painfull little things they are!)...
I really should have clarified myself better. I'm aware of the reasons why my OB has decided on an earlier delivery, it was more I was in the dark about the nature of the steroid injections... I won't go into detail about the twins coming earlier but there are both medical and personal reasons for the decision.
Empty - Wow, great to hear from you! Can't believe they're thinking you may not make it to 32 weeks!!!! Hope everything goes ok and those little bubs of yours hold in there a little longer for you  You must let us know if and when you have them!
DearMum - Great to see you here :yelclap: I've been following your story from the IVF threads and feel like I know you already! :hugs: Hope your boy starts putting on some more weight for you! I know all about the back pain too - it's just starting with me! So how many weeks are you now??? I'm 32 weeks. I had a 3D scan today and our bubs are measuring 4.1 pounds (the boy) and 4.6 pounds (girl) which we're happy about - they've put on quite a bit of weight since we were there last at 28 weeks. As I mentioned earlier, I'm booked in for about 34.5 weeks so I'm happy with that. When we saw the bubs today they were practicing their breathing and sucking which was a relief to see.
Anyway better go but look forward to hearing from you ladies soon!
Charlis Mum and Ilovemygirls, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me - it's so nice to have support from those who've been through this before!

 that's good - so long as you know why it's happening early. I had mine at 35weeks, and with the steroid injections were only in humidicribs for 12hours, and SCN for a week. Have you been preped on what to expect in a SCN and about hand expressing (if you are planning on b/f) to try and get bubs as much EBM as possible while in the cribs? Even when my bubs came out of the crib, they were still too sleepy to feed properly, so had EBM top-ups for most of the week to get them a bit bigger. By the time we went home though, they were nice and strong and almost 5months later are still b/f well with no top-ups.
My only side-effect from the injecton was a nice little bruise at the site - those biggers hurt!!

Hehe yep i remember you from the IVF section:)
I feel we are so blessed having twins.
Yeh i had my scan today im 33+2 weeks:D and my boy was 4.12 pounds and my girl was 4 pounds exactly im happy with there weights but my doc seems to be concerned about the boy as he normally puts on more weight than that so there worried a bit about him in distress:rolleyes:im glad there keeping a close eye on them coz last year i went private and my OB was useless i ended up having a still born at 20 weeks. So yeh this pregnancy has been a worry from the start iv had a cervix stitch put in at 19 weeks and i think that has helped heaps.Your lucky to have your babies at 34.5 weeks mine said they will induce me at 36 weeks, looking forward to that only 2.5 weeks to go yay.Oh yeh when i had my scan today i seen my boy moving his eyes it was cute to see.Do you see your doc weekly now? im needing weekly scans and twice a week HB monitoring.
Have you bought heaps for your Bubbs?
Hehe have you got your bags packed? i havent packed mine yet iv been so lazy.
Well better go and rest
Hi Empty.....Babe i hope your twinnies can prove the docs wrong and you go onto 36 weeks:yes:

I had steroid injections at 23 weeks after going into labour which took 4 days to stop, a standard dose is two doses 24 hours apart.
My 3 were born at 28.3weeks, thanks to the injections they had a very easy NICU ride & were home 5 weeks early.
Only side effect i had was bruising.
