View Full Version : Wheezing baby - any thoughts, experience, advice?
My DS has just turned 4 months and has been wheezing on & off since he was 3-4 weeks old. I have had him checked out a couple of times by the doctor (although conveniently, he is never actually wheezing when we're there) - and his chest is clear, and he doesn't seem to be in any sort of distress or have any other symptoms.
We have a family history of asthma but obviously it's too early to diagnose at his age.
Our doctor has suggested a 'watch & wait & see' approach which I agree with.
So my question is - did anyone else have a baby that wheezed and did they grow out of it themselves?
My other thought was that perhaps he's reacting to something in my diet as he is breastfed.
My DS always breathed funny from a few weeks old. It never sounded right. Everyone used to think he was just sick with a cold. We had him checked out and GPs just told us it was mucous etc. It wasn't until 13 months that he was diagnosed with Tracheomalacia. He doesn't have a severe case but he still has it now and should grow out of it.
I am not by all means saying that is what is wrong though.. :)

My DD was exactly the same. I mentioned it to our gp and she wasnt concerned. Some babies are born with very floppy tracheas, they dont have the muscle tone, so they sound wheezy or snuffly at times (especially when its cold) They often grow out of it as their muscles get stronger. My DD is a lot quieter now. If it doesnt go away, just mention it at your next chek up again. Doesnt sound like anything to be worried about

DS was a wheezer. At four months he was diagnosed with bronchilitis and given readypred. I noticed his cough etc early in the morning stopped when he was on it and commented on this to the GP who dismissed it as floppy larynx and gave me a referral to a specialist. With both Dh and I being asthmatics I wasn't entirely happy with this and when he still wasn't well a week later flew home to Sydney where he was admitted to the childrens hospital.
Look for the warning signs or classical triggers and diarise them (like sundown coughing etc etc) Most paeds/gps will give ventolin with symptoms. RADs is quite common in young babies even those who don't end up being asthmatics

Hi, my ds2 is 8 months and still wheezes.
I had him checked every couple of weeks through winter as he sounded so bad. The pead did an xray of his chest to make sure he had no fluid on his lungs - apparently milk can trickle into their lungs and this was all clear, I was told then he must just be a happy wheezer.
He never responded to ventalin so I had to accept that.
In saying that I accepted it ds2 was at the osteo all through winter at least once a week for digestive issues, as this was healed the wheeze slowed. I now find that if I run out of the colic relief or miss a probiotic dose and he get tummy pain and begins to pukes again then the wheeze starts up again.
If you think it is breastmillk reaction, then you might try to elimate dairy from your diet for a couple of weeks as it produces a lot of mucus which can make the wheeze worse and see if it helps.
Take care Julie

Babies often make wheezing gurgly noises as they breathe due to having a bit of milk in their throat and not being able to clear their throats - that is nothing to worry about. If the chest and airways are clear perhaps that is all it is?
