Can I join? My DD was a prem. She was born at 28.5weeks in 2004. She will be 5 on the 27th of October.

I am hating this weather. Its cold one day, then sunny, then rainy, then cold again, then hot. No wonder I keep getting sick.

BTW - Your babies are so cute.

Hi I am mum to Tamara born in April 08 at 29 weeks. She is 18 months now.
LOL Swap you the weather, was 35 here yesterday TG its only gonna be 26 here today.
I'm also pregnant and so far 35+2 weeks. Very surprising to make it this far. Didn't realise how bloody uncomfortable getting this far would be.

Sure can get it

If you ring the hospital's main switch board & ask to speak to Patient Records. They can put you in the right direction. There maybe a small fee involved to get hold of them but it can be done.

I know plenty of Prem Parents that have done it. Im going to get our next week.

Hey I'll join in! On this thread for a chat! Good idea tt!!!! So dd has been going along really well now at 5mths 3mths corrected has had little growth in the last month which has dropped her in the percentile chart haven't started to stress too much yet but it's in the back of my mind ATM! Hoping for a spurt sometime soon!! Or once again I'll be in panic mode! I really do stress too much lol!

BeatoNo3
15-01-2010, 07:48
Where is she now on the charts... I wouldnt worry to much alot of kids tend to not b on the chart for years... Lachie my prem he isnt on the chart n is far from it he is currently 80cm long n 10kg n is 3 in march.

TripleTime
15-01-2010, 08:00
Kribby - Doesnt matter where they are on the charts, as long as they follow their own curve.

kribby
15-01-2010, 08:14
Yeah she was for corrected just over the 50% and now just above the 25% for actual she was just above the 3% now not in the chart! So not really following the curve! But on the other hand she is happy, healthy and alert so I'm not TOO worried ATM! I got a phisio and immunisations in feb and a pead appointment in march so we'll see what they say then!
It's just so hard not to stress when I know what she went through not that it was as rough as others I just would hate to see a tube back in her nose iykwim!!
She's also gone from putting on 250g a week to 125g but I'm assuming that's from her lack of growth! And the fact she was continuiously constpated untill I changed her formula!

kribby
15-01-2010, 08:17
On a lighter note in the last month she has developed so much grabs things now and plays with toys not to a huge extent but definitely see a change! And she can sit up and stand up aided and actually prefers it to lying down which can be a pain when I'm trying to get things done but so happy on the same token!! Brought her a bumbo the other day and she loves it for all of 5min until she get worn out lol!

BeatoNo3
15-01-2010, 08:19
But also is she mobile, Lachie cant walk but he can rolll n is now starting in a walking frame so he is burning cals all the time and he is on 1.5cal/ml 24 hr feeds thru a pump and he burns so fast. So dont b surprised if she is mobile that could b why she is not gaining as much but the way i always see it is a gain is better then a loss, lachie gained 50grams last month isnt much but it is something.... But I think we can all relate when it comes to stressing bout the little buggers lol...

BeatoNo3
15-01-2010, 08:23
Any of u ladies on fb...

kribby
15-01-2010, 08:56
Yeah definitelybeatono3 stress head lol!! She's not mobile as such but is moving a lot more and awake a lot more and like I said is sitting and standing but aided not by herself has rolled a couple of times from tummy to side/back but that's doing tummy time on a pillow she can't roll if she's on a flater surface! So I would say she's definitely burning more calories and 125 a week isn't so bad they did say between 100-250g is a good weight gain!! It's so hard to know!! Lol but I don't think the worries will ever go away I mean one day she'll be a teenager and have a boyfriend argh that's scarey!! Lol I'm on fb

Its still a curve, just her own weird one. Tahlia's all over the shop with weight gain. If she's doing alot more, she's during calories.

Hi Ladies, my earliest was born at 31 weeks, weighing 3lb 5oz which i think is 1.7kg. She was breathing air and needed tube feeds to help fatten her up but was out of hospital exactly 4 weeks after her birth, she sadly got bronchiolitis at 7 weeks and stopped breathing, she ended up fully ventilated for 6 day's it was touch and go for that entire time, but she pulled thru and has never looked back, small and petite but healthy as an ox, absolutely no probs with anything....very blessed. The other 2 were also early DS was born at 37wks, weighing 2.4kg and DD2 born also 37 weeks at weighed 2.7kg. All little tackers, now expecting #4 no idea what will happen new hubby so very exciting!!

Afternoon,

DD had her 5yo corrected testing etc at FMC on Wednesday. And she passed with flying colours.

She is in the 79th Percentile for her age.

I am so proud. It can be a very stressful time not knowing.

But look at my DD she was a 28weeker, and now you wouldn't know she was a premmie.

Its a long and hard journey. But you will get to the point where I am eventually.

Will Add you all on FB.

Hi all, i am a foster carer and i have tentatively accepted a placement of an aboriginal baby boy who was born last week weighing 1685grams, he will be released from hospital at 2200grams if all goes well and he will have him from then. I have not cared for such a tiny baby before and i'm a bit nervous about what to expect...i assume i will get some info on his specific needs when i get him but i would love to hear from any of you guys who have been there with such a teeny one. His mother was induced approx 6 weeks early as he was failing to thrive. Poor bubba got a double whammy in the size stakes!

NICU/SCN should send him home with what some of us like to call 'instructions'.

Either 3 or 4 hourly feeds, first few weeks he'll feed like clock work. Than after a while he may start to space feeds out during the night but in saying that due to his size he may play catch up & try to gain weight, he may also go the other way & struggle to gain weight cause of his size.

Average 34weeker is 2kg at birth providing their complication free, he didnt do to bad weight wise.

Treat him as you would any other baby, he's the same just happens to be on the smaller side.

There is also actual age (from DOB) & corrected age (from EDD), for all milestones you need to use his corrected age.

One thing i learnt was, dont sweat the small stuff.

Hope that helps.

BTW, your an awesome person for welcoming a prem into your home. Its hard work but so worth it .

TripleTime

Sit him upright, it cradles their bums lower than their legs, promotes core stength.

My three were in them from about 4kg till they could get themselves out.

Hi Ladies,

Just wanted to introduce myself,

I had my son Jacob on 27th Feb 2010 at 27 +3 weeks. We spend 12 weeks in RPA and royal womans hospital with our final 2 weeks in Our local hospital Manly

He was born at 876grams and came home at 2kg exactly. At last weigh which was 8 weeks corrected ( due for a weigh in today) he was 4.3kgs so gaining great weight gain.

Jacob has been home for just over 9 weeks and is 9 weeks 2 days corrected. he came home one day before his EDD.

He is doing really well, smiles every now and then but what a serious little man it takes so much effort to crack the smallest smiles!

Looking forward to chatting with you all.

 Hi I'm joining in here :)

My boys were both prem. DS1 30+1 weeks and DS2 34+3 weeks.

Cassie, at 5 months DS1 was only 4.8kg, we lived in Marvel Loch when he was born and I only ever took him to KEMH, the country Drs and CHN just had NO IDEA about prems! 600gms a month is excellent and is well within normal weight-gain limits. I wouldn't say he is failing to thrive at all. You are doing a great job xx

Good morning ladies :D

I hope you don't mind if I join in.
I am mumma to 7 kids 4 of which have been born prem.
DS3 ~ 36+1 weeks weighing 2830g now 8
DD2 ~ 35 weeks weighing 2210g now 31 months DD3 ~ 28+1 weeks weighing 1045g now 20 months...9 weeks in hospital
DS4 ~ 25 weeks weighing 920g now 7 months...15 weeks in hospital.

Weight has been such a problem for my 2 smallest prems...DD3 is 20 months old and only weighs in at 9.1kg and 76cm tall (short lol) and DS4 is 7 months and is a hefty 4.3kg. Both where/are classed as 'failure to thrive'
DS4 was lossing weight and that is when everyone started to get concerned...we are adding extra formula to his bottles to try and get extra calories into him
It hasn't affected him developmentally in fact he is a bit ahead of his corrected age. :D

DS4 got very sick with NEC and perforated his bowel when he was a week old it was a very hard time...I didn't get to hold him until he was 3 weeks old...it seemed like a life time at the time.

Look forward to chatting :D

Wow on CPAP already and 3 hour feeds! She is doing well. Have you had cuddles yet of your gorgeous girl?

No cuddles here yet. As she has the artery line still in the umbilical cord. They said as soon as that's out I'd be able to have cuddles.

Got to help with her first bath (sponge) last night & was able to hold her while the nurse changed the bedding. The feeling I had while holding her was amazing. So I'm really looking forward to the cuddles.

How long was everyone else in hospital for?

i should probably pop in and say hello. I have 2 children who were both premmie. Ds was born 36 weeks and was in and out of hospital for the first few months of his life. He now has anaphalaxis and autism he was born june 07. Dd was born at 30+5. Came out apgar of 9 and 10 never needed ventalator and on suck feeds from day dot. She was on demand after 5 days. Welcome Truly Blessed and Congratulations on the birth of Olivia, such a pretty name. My son was born at 27+3 and was in Hospital 87 days, he came home the day before his EDD.He has been home 3 months now. It is a roller coaster but hang in there and come and chat to us when ever you need as I dont think anyone knows what its like to go through the NICU journey unless they have been there.

As the others said thats great she is off cpap it sounds like she is a strong little girl!

My 25 weeker was in for 101 days (3 days before EDD)
My 28 weeker was in for 63 days (discharged at 37 weeks)
My 35 weeker was in for 6 days
My 36 weeker was in for 10 days...but he was born with pneumonia so was in for complications from that.

Awesome that you got a little hold TB...hopefully it won't be long for a cuddle.
I waited 3 weeks before I got my first hold of my 25 weeker...it seemed like an eternity.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I was curious to find out others time frames as we really don't have 1 atm. But hopefully won't be long if she keeps doing well.

Can't believe my girl will be a week old tomorrow already. The days are just blending one into the next atm.

We were always told, not to expect them home before their due date. If they did come home before than it was a bonus.

I do know they couldnt come home before 35 weeks cause thats when monitors could go unless there was problems.

TrulyBlessed, we were told to aim for due date too if DS1 came home before then it was a huge bonus. He came home at 36 weeks gestation weighing 2.09kg :)
DS2 was only expected to be in SCN for 2-3 weeks for his gestation and size (34+3wks 3.09kg born)

Hi! i hope you don't mind if i join you!

I have twin boys born 10 weeks ago at 25+6weeks. Tomorrow they will be 36 weeks corrected. They have been in hospital for 70 days so far, and they moved out of NICU to special care last week, both together which is great. The older baby (3mins older!!) born at 780g has never been intubated, went straight onto cpap and came off for good about 3weeks ago, no oxygen required. He is breastfeeding 2 feeds a day with topups thru NG tube, and is a little trooper! He is now a chubby 2.7kg
My younger bub was intubated his first night only then onto cpap, and has been on cpap except when intubated at 3 weeks for 3 nights with sepsis, but back onto cpap and came off 2 weeks ago onto low flow oxygen. He is a bit more fragile of the 2, and is on 1-2 breastfeeds per day, with topups. He is lovely, and 2.6kg with the hugest cheeks ever!

TrulyBlessed, your baby olivia sounds amazing. The days still blend together for me, but seriously the time is going so fast, i can't believe it. I can't believe i have been going into the hospital every day for 70 days (plus was a patient for 2 weeks before that!!) Haven't really seen the sun since May!! There are major ups and downs, and just when i think i have a handle on things something will happen and the floodgates will open and i will be a teary mess again!! How i feel generally depends on how my babies are doing!
I know what you mean about staying up to express too!! I am due to express again at around 10pm then up at 2!

Just thought i would join you all, it is great to read about others who have been through something similar!

Just a question, has anyone successfully breastfed premmie twins?

Just a question, has anyone successfully breastfed premmie twins?

Mine were not as early as yours, but they were in SCN for 2 weeks after being born at 34w5d. They couldn't suckle at first and were tube fed. I started expressing straight away to up my supply, then after they came out of the humidicribs I would put them to the breast. Fortunately they took to it straight away, although sometimes only for a few minutes. The hospital supplemented with formula and expressed bottle feeds, although I pushed for them to take the breast as much as possible when I was with them (this was not easy as they liked to keep to their routine, although I did point out that as I couldn't be there for every booby feed it made sense to give it to them as much as possible for when I could be there).

They came home at 36w4d and have been happily breastfeeding ever since (sometimes I wish they wouldn't suck so hard!:p)

As i have said before i have a 7month old son he was 10 weeks early .
Im havign car seat problems he is 65cm long and only 6kgs he is getting to long for the car capsule and i carnt turn him around becasue he doesnt sit up or have 100 % head control .. I carnt put a reverse carseat in car becasue partner is 6ft 3 and the car capsule just fits if . And becaseu he is small he needs the inserts and the good ones are to big for the patrol wat do i do ? Do i turn him around ????? Help please:confused:

Legally he can not turn, the min weight limit is 8kg before they can turn. Your partners going to have to suck it up im afraid & deal with him being in a convertible seat.

DH is 6ft 3 & moved his seat forward while ever the kids were RF.

We put up with our seats being too far forward for DS1 too, My partner is 185cms (not sure of feet and inches) and I'm 176cms.

It's for their safety, totally worth being uncomfy IMO.

What kind of car do you have? We found that the rearward carseat actually fitted better than the capsule and we could move the seat back a smidge.

He carnt drive if i replace with a car seat i was hoping someone would have a brand of car seat that they have used before that isnt to big and if they have used it in a Nissian patrol i know he legally carnt turn around im not stuipd and with having 2 car seats in the car isnt helping:
And being uncomfortable for us isnt going to work we are travelling 1200klms every 2 months to perth for DR appointments from kalgoorlie

Can you swap sides? Put the other car seat behind the drivers seat and the baby behind the passenger?

Have you tried putting a rearward facing seat in to see the space you would have? As I said before, we had slightly more space with a rearward seat than the capsule.

PS, I was living south of Southern Cross when DS1 was born (10 weeks early) so I do understand those long trips to Perth!

Hello everyone!! Im also new here My twins are now 12 weeks old who would have thought it would be here already.

I have a girl and a boy. They were born at 35 weeks due to me having to be induced due to having severe pre eclampsia. I ended up with an emergancy c sect due to Hollys hand coming first. Holly was born at 2050grams and Riley at 1960. Holly needing no oxigen at birth and Riley needing a little bit due to hinm being starltled because they dragged him out by his feed due to he decided to flip at the last minute.

I got to kiss them goodbye and down they went with my partner. It was then I didnt get to see them untill 2 days later due to me loosing 7ltrs of blood and spending 2 days in ASCU in KEMH.

The twins were both put in the incubater for jaundice. Riley was given a drip and also they needed to slow is headbeat down because it was beating too fast. Im not full ball on everything that happened because in those 2 days was when most of it happened and I was out to it.

Holly and Riley came out of all machines and moved to SCN at 3 days and then we got transfered to our local hospital after 4 days so they could spend time in the nursery there and it was a lot closer to home.

They were in with me during th day and in the nursery of a night by the time they were 6 days old. At 5 days we started breastfeeding 2:1 which proved to be doing well. Although they couldnt attach properly just yet I used a nipple shield which helped... the at 7 days we started doing all BF except for 2 x tube feeds in the night and the following day we started full BF.

The best advise i was ever given to BF my twins was don't wear them out because you will take 2 steps back. I did get upset sometimes when they wouldnt suck for a feed but dont push them because that will make them even more tired.

It will happen and try not to get too upset if they dont suck everyfeed, because you dont want to wear them out.

Good luck!! :) I love having twins. Its deffinately worth it,

:wave:Hi ladies,

Im new in here with premmie twins born at 26wks on 25/10/10 Weighing DD-950g & DS-900g at birth. Who are 3 weeks old (39wk gestation) tomorrow.I had a bleed at 23+3wks was hospitalised for 3 days bedrest then sent home on total bedrest which i had another bleed but sleep through it 1 wk later then my waters broke (twin 1) at 25+2days so was hospitalised on more bedrest till they were 26wks & i was showing infection in my bloodstream so emergency ceasar was booked for that day.Theyve done pretty good so far,few little hiccups, both have had a blood transfusion DD within 24hrs of birth & DS at 2wks +3days.He has since then gone back on the venitlator this week as he was struggling on Cpap so today is his 4th day back on it but he seems alot better whereas DD is powering along, only 2 more levels on Cpap to come down & shes off it,she does better off it then on but will get tired very quickly. We can see her growing very quickly & leaving her brother behind so were all hoping he picks up real soon. Tomorrow is weigh in,house change for them & cuddles day so dh trying to get time off for a 1st cuddle which will be lovely. When we met OB i asked for smaller babies this time rnd ..... i did not mean this small so im being really careful what i wish for lately. Were hoping to have them home mid january at EDD, was told it could be for xmas but not to get our hopes up too much, so im planning on mid jan anyway to save myself the heartache if xmas comes & goes.

Would love to chat about your premmie experiences & challenges & hope yours are doing well.

Hi plsjust1more!
Firstly, well done on keeping your babies in for as long as you did, it sounds like it would have been a very scary few weeks.

I had my twin boys in June this year at 25+6weeks gestation, after 2 weeks total bed rest for short dilated cervix i went into spontaneous labour and delivered vaginaly. They spent 87 & 94 days in hospital and came home at 38 & 39 weeks corrected age. They are now home with me and are doing really well, 7 weeks corrected age.

I am sorry that you and your babies are going through this, it is such a difficult time. The things that helped me were
- being told that you are the one constant thing in your babies life. They DO know who you are, and while they are handled by so many nurses and doctors, your voice and your touch is constant for them, and they DO know you.
- remembering that every prem babies journey is different, even at the same gestation. Try not to compare your babies to other babies or even each other! (I found this quite difficult as like you, i had one that seemed to thrive and the other that had more setbacks, more hard times and a more difficult start to life)
- Ask the nurses for cuddles, some will just assume you would like a cuddle every day without having to ask, others will not offer unless you ask. If the baby is not up for it the nurse will let you know.
- Do what you have to do to get through this time. For me that was doing nothing but spending all my time at the hospital, for others it was having some time at home, sleeps in and spending time sorting out their nursery etc.
- Don't feel bad for not returning phonecalls. i discouraged people from calling me cos i could never answer the phone, text messaging worked best for me as i could do it while expressing.
- Talk to a counsellor or social worker or whoever is offered at your hospital, sometimes i felt like i had it all together, but would realise that i totally didnt once i started talking about it.
- there is a book i think it is called "parenting the premature baby-the emotional journey", which i found in the hospital library a few weeks before they came home, and it would have been good to read early on, it goes through everything you are feeling like you wrote the book yourself.

You may not feel like it, but for me the time went at a very strange pace, like the quickest time ever, but also the slowest if you know what i mean. I am happy to tell you all about our journey if you are interested, feel free to PM if you like, i would be happy to hear from you. what hospital are you at?
I hope weigh in went well (i used to think of it as reverse biggest loser!) and that they are enjoying their new houses!!

Hello,

Hoping I can intrude on your convos

I had DS 6/09/09 at 35+1 due to PROM.
He spent 3.5wks in NICU/SCN due to Jaundice, feeding issues, regulating body temp etc, but nothing too major.

He is now 14m (13m corr) and doing well. Nearly walking, trying to say a few words and very cheeky. :D

I am currently 34+5w pg and as you could imagine, am starting to get anxiety that Im hitting that point in my pg when I had DS.

Im actually on bed rest atm as since 33wks I have been dilated to 2cm and am thinning.
Im trying really hard to hold out for the next 9 days, until 36wks. Anything from there is awesome.

Last night I was having cramps for a few hrs and then eventually, they regulated to come every 10m for a little over an hr.
They eventually stopped and I havent really had any cramps this morning (just the occassional BH).

Im so worried that this bub is going to come out soon. Im hoping its just one of those torturous things Im going to have to deal with for the next few weeks and baby keeps cooking - not sure if thats possible though:(

I just really feel like I can't mentally handle the prem process again. I was fine the first time and dont feel it really affected me but this time, its different.

I just want a 'normal' birth and I feel so guilty.
:crying:

Sorry, just needed to vent!

Hi, just thought I'd introduce myself and say hi.
My DD was born on Monday at 35+6.
she is doing really well - no nursery time, no jaundice, no feeding tubes. We feel so fortunate!
BFing isn't working, though. She is too sleepy and her mouth is too small! I had feeding issues with my DS, though, who wasn't prem but was a low birth weight baby, so I'm prepared for the long slow process ahead.

Glad to have a place to chat and get advice.

Can anyone recommend any essential websites/ books on what I need to know with a premmie bub, and what may/ may not be issues for her. I like to be prepared!
