Hi

My name is Kaz, I'm new to this site but not to parenting forums in general. I have a 6 year old son, Lachlan who was diagnosed with a significant language impairment (SLI) last year whilst he was in pre-primary.

After much assessing from teachers, his speech pathologist and school psychologist, we got him into a LDC (extremely limited places and a lot of needy children) for year one this year. So far, he has completed 6 months of his schooling year and is doing extremely well. We could not be any happier with his progress.

Are there any other parents of a child who is attending a LDC out in bubhub land?? I would love to talk with other parents who understand what it's like to have a child with a language impairment.. So far I have not found anyone online I can chat to about this...

I look forward (hopefully) to hearing from someone soon...:fingerscrossed:

My son is attending a pre-school for children with developmental delays (he's nearly 4). His main delays are speech and comprehension (are at a level of half his age). He may be eventually diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder but that wouldn't happen til next year.

What is this centre you have your son at, and how does it work? I'm very interested.

my son is attending something similar, SEDU (special education development unit) as he is 4, autistic and non verbal. An incredible amount of progress has been made in the last year since we got him diagnosed and had his grommits put in.

they are absolutely fabulous, and I really believe more states should have them, specially since we are having a 'boom' so to speak with language disorders and the like =(

feel free to pm me, if you want to chat or a spare shoulder.

Hi Everyone...Thanks for the replies!

The school takes children with language impairment, they basically follow the curriculum as they would in a mainstream school, but in the LDC they have fewer children in the classroom (10 in my son's class) and therefore they get more teacher one-on-one... They do have more intense language and maths lessons... There are also 2 speech pathologists working with the children at the school.

I don't really know how it all works to be truthfull. It was hard to get Lachlan into the school (many assessments later), but it has benefitted him greatly. We were told to expect issues with learning to read, but my son can read and is learning new words everyday...Quite possibly something has been switched on in his brain...

Lachlan will go back to his previous school and be integrated into a regular classroom when speech pathologist says that he is ready..

There is a lady online who has two girls one with SLI and one with verbal dyspraxia I'm just not sure if she is on bubhub or not ( I met her through a different website but she does get around a bit :D ). One of her girls is in a Language Development Centre in Perth She would be great for you to chat to. If you are interested PM me and I'll point you in her direction.

hi i am sarah
i have the same problem, i only have one kid, who is 3 and a boy. he is seeing ppl in community health centre, a speech therapist and we attend few play groups and the ladies there told us that my son may have autism spectrum. he will see a child doctor in mid feb 2010 hopefully.... i have no family support from my husbads family or mine... my husband is in denial and he says there is nothing wrong with my son.... he doesnt go with us to see speech therapist or the doctors.... this is quiet difficult... sad too.... at the beginning i cried one day a lot now i am just doing everything to help my son... his behavour started to change and it shows more that there is something wrong.... eg when he in his room or with us sitting somewhere, he likes to be block off himself with toys books and our leg and arm and etc body parts.... he often pulls my arm or leg so i lay it next to him on the floor so he is in a square so he is blocked off i suppose he feels safe like that.... i do not know how their brain function... i do not know how to describe it... ppl who r knowledgable in this will know what i am talking about... anyway it is a long story... my son does not talk much never has.... he refuses to use his words instead he uses violence to get the message through ppl even kids.... it is quiet difficult at times.... he is enrolled in the intervention program that the special school offer and next yr hopefully we were attending a music play group at the special school... his name is in the waiting list for the intervention program.... i am here for moral support and info on this illness.... before my son i never knew this illness existed....
take care all

Hi :)

i have an 8 year old boy who is in his final year (final term now!) of an LDC. he is being transitioned to a local mainstream school next year. he has been lucky and attended LDC since kindy. there is not enough places for kids, speech and language delay is so widespread, and the kids who are lucky enough to get into an LDC are very very fortunate.

Speech WA is another great resource for parents :)

Good Luck, and happy to chat at any time - language delay affects so much of a kids development and life, its good to chat to other parents who know :)
