Hi there,
Hope you can help, I just got my BFP yesterday, it was quite a shock as this is our firts month of trying! Anyway, I have no idea what foods I can eat here in Australia. I had my firts baby in the UK and the types of fish and things we get there are different. e.g. can you eat Dhufish? Does anyone have a good site I can look at or some general guidelines on what is OK and what isn't. Thanks so much,
Em x
Hi
Firsty congratulations on your pregnancy :goodvibes:
You will hear lots of advice about what is right to eat and what isn't. Some people are more pedantic than others when it comes to eating certain foods, so the best thing is to be well informed. Most pregnancy books are helpful in advising of the right foods, as are government websites (just google, heaps will come up).
Two of the main concerns during pregnancy is toxoplasmosis and listeria. Both illnesses are quite rare, but if contracted can be fatal to an unborn baby.
You can contract toxoplasmosis from eating meat that is undercooked, and also from kitty litter if you have a cat. Listeria can be contracted from many things, there is a sticky thread on the main discussion page outlining which foods should be avoided.
With the fish, you are only meant to eat so many servings a week, and it's recommended that pregnant women avoid deep sea fish as it has a high mercury content - the older the fish, the higher the mercury.
It all seems overwhelming at first, but don't stress too much and enjoy the pregnancy!!
The pp made the right reccomendations
My general rule, was nothing pre-cooked, undercooked, or not cooked (as in deli meat, sushi, meat, eggs etc). And nothing store bought unless I made it myself ie. salads, sandwiches, juices etc.

This is a website that I have used. Its from the government so its pretty safe to trust it.
