View Full Version : Does it look like eczema to you? not a pretty picture
Dear All,
went to 2 different doctors with this rash on bub's back...
one is saying that it looks like eczema and another one is saying that it is due to her teething...
we have our paed appointment still in 10 days time...
what do you think?
thank you

My son has exactly the same all over his legs back, stomach and starting on his face.

gosh poor bubba that doesnt look very nice for her
it doesnt look like teething rash to me but its hard to tell in pics if its ecxema
have you noticed it recently or has she always had it , could be many things change of diet, washing powder, did you move house , could be a new plant from the spring weather ,
have you been putting anything on it , i would try a sudocream or something i know that is nappy rash cream but i find it works a treat and if you can clear it up with that then i would use QV cream everyday after baths so not to dry out her skin
unless it is a moist rash , sorry not to helpful here is just so hard that i cant see it
good luck at you app hope you get some answers
Thank you Melly,
was hoping that it's just her teeth...
I noticed one patch of dry skin on her head some time ago and GP told me to make sure that it is not dry and one more patch was on her neck and behind her ear and now it is her back...
is it itchy for them?:(

i would say it is itchy , but try the QV cream its amazing stuff , at least untill you can get to your spec app
gosh poor bubba that doesnt look very nice for her ...
thank you
she has one patch of red dry skin behind her ear and scratching it a lot (trying to)...
it is a third time it looks so bad on her back...
first time I thought it was rash due to her being too warm...
second time I took her to our GP and she said - teething...
now we saw a different doctor and she is saying eczema:(...
it is not wet, her skin is shiny on the picture cos I put some cream on it as both doctors told me to keep it moisturized...
they also said it can not be food related cos it is on her back...
and I use all natural things... to wash her, her cloths, everything really...not sure what is causing it if it is eczema:confused:
Is your daughter breast fed or formula? As it can be the formula you are using or something you are eating thats going through the breast milk
she was on EBM and on formula for a few good months now so I am not sure if formula is the one to blaim:confused:
I also give her some solids but I do 4 days rule and never noticed any reactions to food...
Ladies, can you recommend me a good dermatologist in Sydney?
My GP does not treat it as a big deal...fair enough but I hate to see how my DD is suffering...she is always upset, trying to scratch herself and refusing food...she is teething as well:(

Hmm it sort of looks like mild eczema (over a large area)... but it looks like bad heat rash too.
When I had eczema as a child it was blotchier and more inflamed, but then I used to scratch it. Blasted rash.
I also found that a lot of creams irritated it more, the greasy hot feeling would exacerbate it. The only thing that worked for me was the steroid cream. Diprosone or somesuch.
Make sure you use cotton clothing and try not to let her overheat. Also try to see if it is related to the formula or food.
If it was my bub I would look into getting a really mild steroid cream and applying it very sparingly to see if it helps (i'd make sure it's ok with the dr first of course)
I've used steroid cream on Ava before for a neck rash. It was the pink and white tube iirc. It's very light and you only need a tiny bit.

I will be watching this thread closely :detective:
My DD has had a similar rash along the inside of one arm and her chest for a month now, at times it flares all red and welty and then it eases but leaves its "trace" so to speak. I am off to the GP this week.
Tonight though I put rolled oats in a stocking in her bath and it really seemed to ease the itchiness for her , maybe try that in the meantime?
Thank you Harlequin,
I am a bit worried about applying steroid cream as our GP keeps on telling me that it is due to her teething...and she told me not to use a steroid cream (I asked her)...she said that her skin needs a moisturizer and that's it:confused:
When we had it the very first time I also thought that it was a heat rash as it is started after we spend a day out (and it was a very hot day) but now we were at home cos of the dust storm and it is not hot at all and I do not dress her too warm so I am confused...
she is defenetly itchy...trying to reach her ear and she is very unsettled...
I hope our paed would help:(

yep, I am bathing her in oats and some herbs as well when her skin goes like that and it helps a lot:yes: and I can see the redness goes away... but from time to time it flares up again and I am not so sure that it is just her teething so I took her to a different GP and she said - looks like eczema:confused:

This is my second bub and I have never heard of a teething rash  I am intrigued... did your GP tell you WHY teething might cause a rash?
Yes rolled oats are wonderful, and I find cold pressed sesame oil (not the cooking stuff) is also very effective, and you don't have to worry about steriods. I just keep applying it liberally every time the area starts looking a bit dry, also wonderful for any nappy rash.
Health shops have it.
I hope you get it under control for her soon, nasty stuff.
This is my second bub and I have never heard of a teething rash  I am intrigued... did your GP tell you WHY teething might cause a rash?
GP said it is very common:confused:
she also said that it is not food related as a back does not get effected by food - face and chest area but not a back:confused:
I told her that my bub is teething for ever now:) and she never had anything on her skin before (only her bum gets very red and her face) but never her neck or her back looked like that...
GP said that all sorts of rashes are very common as a skin reaction to the teething...
my mum is also telling me that she never heard of any rash due to teething:confused:
and told me to see a different GP:)

Hmm... I think I'd be agreeing with your mum, new GP!

What a load of rot that it couldnt be food related
It certainly can be as there are no set rules about how a child will react ... If that were the case then sheesh how easy life would be !
G comes out with rashes like these from time to time & yes heat can have a part in it aggravating it because well when their skin flares it becomes hot & itchy & well the heat aggravates it iykwim !
But finding something that works to help ease it is the key ... Yes something natural could be the answer but sadly sometimes steroid creams are the only way to go but for me I use them as a last resort.
I would push for them to look into her having some allergy tests hun. Keep the photos as proof also incase it isnt there when you see the Paed ! Keep a diary of when it appears, dissapears & what has changed in her diet etc.
Good luck !
Hmm... I think I'd be agreeing with your mum, new GP!
I researched on Internet:) and there are a lot of people out there who are saying that teething is causing rash...and found a very similar thread:D
most of the times it looks like small red dots over large area - exactly what we have now:confused:

thank you
I am doing it and can not figure it out:(...
I will ask about allergy tests and show our paed pics:yes: (I am taking pictures every day as by the time we see him I am not sure how it would look like)
DS had a very similar looking rash when he was around 6-18months. I was worried as it persisted and would settle and then inflame. I put it down to heat rash and in the end treated it with homeopathics with great results. Id never heard of teething rash?
It doesn't look like eczema though but this myabe because you have been treating it?

Do you mean cos it is all shiny?
If so - yes, it has cream on it.
What homeopathics did you use? if you do not mind me asking.
I am bathing her in one herb when it goes bad and it helps her with redness and I think it is less itchy...

Hi, you poor little one, I think it looks like eczema, Myself and the 3 kids get it, all food and chemical related my ds gets it on his back so I think your dr could be wrong. Sometimes food reactions don't show up untill a few days later.
Just a thought have you been putting clothes on bub that havn't been washed first as formaldehyde can leave the skin looking as though it has been burnt that fiery red - similar to the rash on your bub. I had this on my legs after I wore a new pair of pants fron target.
To keep eczema at bay I have found that twice daily moisturiser works, flax seed or vitamin e on really bad patches and with flair ups re moisturise 2 hrs after first application.
I use rolled oats in the bath and moisturise with dermaveen cream
I hope this helps and your pead can shed some light.... eczema sucks

Thank you so much!
no, I never put anything on her unwashed and I iron everything for her (both sides) I am a bit of a crazy one like that:o
With flax seed do I put them on her back just dry seeds or do I mix it with her cream? it is not going to be very itchy?
I think it looks like a heat rash/
I hope our paed would tell me that as well :)
but it is not itchy, right?
my bub is constantly trying to scratch herself:(

Hey gotmilk,
Just checked out your pic and it definatly looks like excema to me. It looks just like my DS's and the only thing that really works when it looks as angry as that is the steriod cream.
Advantan is the only one that helps him too, the weaker ones just dont seem to do anything.
You only have to use a small amount once a day for three days with sorbolene over the top and it will be gone.
I know you dont want to use steriod cream but Im sure your bub will be 1000 x happier in 3 days when it is gone and no longer itchy.
Hope im of some help
:hugs:

Thats not any eczema that i've ever had or seen and i've had it all my life.
Looks like a prickly heat kind of rash or a reaction to the washing detergent.
I'd be off to the docs quick smart.

Hi
I use flax seed oil you can pierce the capsules to rub in the skin or add it to a drink. I was also recently told to put evening primrose oil in their breakfast or a drink as the oil then seeps into the skin
Oh I also use advanton on ds2 clears up pretty quickly - i dont always use it though and only when its really bad
Hope all is ok

Yes as is shiny but it also doesn't look as 'violent' as Ive seen most cases of eczema look...iykwim?
I used Apis 6c x2 daily for about 10 days but it started to clear in 3-4. I have Apis on stand by and give it to him just as he starts to get a few spots. When it was bad is was all over his back just like your little possum! Which herbs are using for the soak, I know you mentioned Oats but are you using anything else?
Dear All,
went to a different GP today to get one more opinion...
she said what my DD has on her neck and her ear - mild eczema, when it gets bad I can use steroid cream, she prescriped me one...
as for her back she said it is not eczema...looks like very bad heat rash (I have no idea how she could get it being at home wth aircon and dressed lighly) or reaction to something...
she said maybe food related (again my GP told me otherwise that food does not make the back' skin react), maybe some washing powder or anything...
as I am trying to keep her chemicals free I am afraid that she might be reacting to food...
I have no idea...I always follow new food 4 days rule and never noticed anything...
She said that I have to see our paed in regards to her back rash
So I am even more confused now...
I asked her about allergy test and she said usually it gets done when bub is one year old...
but I'll check with our paed
Which herbs are using for the soak...
Bidens tripartita, also commonly known as Three-lobe Beggarticks calms skin down very well and it is not as angry...some health stores have it but it is hard to find in Australia so I bring some from overseas...
there is one more which is strong and very effective but I do not use it as my bub drinks some water in a bath:) and it is not good if small child drinks it...

Poor little thing, looks just like a rash my DS got when he had to have antibiotics.. and needless to say, has since been diagnosed with an allergy and won't be having them again anytime soon! Lucky for us, the cure was as easy as stopping the meds.
I find it so frustrating when doctors opinions vary so much.. who are we supposed to trust when even the doctors' opinions differ?!?!:hair:
But it does sound like you have finally got a straight answer, congrats! Now good luck for the paed.. hope you find the answer to fix her little back soon..
:hugs:

yep, she also asked me if I was giving her any antibiotics...I forgot to mention to her that I am giving her Hylands teething pills:confused:...
maybe she is reacting to them? they homeopathic though:confused:
rash went on her chest, her belly and under one knee...
her face is all red, she keeps on rubbing her eye, her neck went all red...it looks bad...it went bad just now...
what do I do?
Do I take her somewhere right now?:crying:

yes i'd be taking her somewhere to get looked at
It definitely doesnt resemble any eczema i've ever seen and i suffer from it myself since a bub.
I doubt its anything too serious but best to get checked to relieve poor bubs.
It doesn't really look like excema to me either, it doesn't look raised and bumpy, my DS gets excema as he has an allergy to dairy and eggs, steroids were the only thing that ended up working, but avoiding the trigger was the key for us.
You can get allergy tested at 6 months i know cause we got DS2 done then. If it's getting worse and spreading i would definately take bub to see someone. Goodluck. :hugs:

I am not that panicy now:)...I read if there is no swelling there is no need in ER...no swelling:)
still I went already to 3 different doctors in the last 2 weeks and they all told me different things:hair:
DD felt a sleep already so I'll take her tomorrow first thing in the morning...
it is just scary how it goes so bad just infront of you:no:
I would call our paed and ask him to see us right away and if he can not I'll take her to a different GP...again...

Hun its sounds like she definitely has an intolerance &/or allergy ... Get it checked :yes:
Thank you,
Will sure do tomorrow.
I have no idea what am I doing wrong:(
I gave her porridge with apple and formula today. I do not know if it is her food...
She was wearing only a cotton singlet today...
No hot bath, bathed her in QV oil, put a cream, aircon is set on +21...
I do not know...GPs told me different things:hair:
I hate seeing her like that...
she could not sleep today at all...poor thing... and felt asleep while we were bathing her!
She is rubbing her eyes a lot now
Maybe something from outside is causing it:confused:

It could be something outside but it could be the food or formula ...
Has it only appeared since her change/ introductions to formula ? If so then I would almost bet that its to do with that :(

Have you stopped giving her the teething tablets to see if it helps?
I would stop using the creams on her heatrash. Just use calamine lotion. Creams can make heatrash worse because they make it warm.
Give her frequent cool baths (not too cool) and dry her really well then put the calamine on with a cotton ball.

I dont think anyone has mentioned viral rashes, which it resembles most to me.
I tend to view eczema has more raised, structured and a dry look.
Allergies I see as more rounded, puffed.
Heat rash and Viral Rash match the photo... If heat rash it tends to be localised, I'm voting viral rash which, once the viral cause is found is either treated or wait to disappear.
Agree with Harlequin = calamine lotion.
Maybe roseola?
Where abouts are you in Sydney? I know 2 very good GP's especially for babies/children, I know how frustrating it is to find a decent one! Also If you are still interested in a dermatologist I can give you the contact for one, however I think there may be a few months wait to see him.

I was wondering about roseola too, lilshenanigans, but when Ava had it it was not itchy at all. It was just there, doing nothing :)
I would put money on really bad heat rash. I just think you need to stop using the cream, it will warm up the rash and make her more uncomfortable. Calamine lotion rocks, it's nice and cool. :)

I live near North Sydney but I am happy to travel to see a decent doctor...
I just do not know anymore...
She got very bad last night so I went to see yet another GP this morning:rolleyes:...
I am just so tired that she is suffering and no one can help...
He said that it is eczema 100% (on her back, on her tummy, on her legs today as well) and prescriped a steroid cream...I bought it as I am almost in tears when I think that there are 3 days off are coming and what if she gets real bad...
So I applied cream once already...
I would be very greatful for a good dermatologist as well!
Thank you:)
