It's not for us to tell others what to do with their children, but if I were you I would be encouraging your friend to talk to her GP or CHN about what she is doing. It isn't good for babies to swap formulas often, and although she is only using two different kinds I can't imagine it would be a good thing.
Secondly, there is nothing to prove (if what I have been told is correct) that any of those Novolac formulas actually have any benefit at all. When I asked about them for one of my babies I was quickly advised to stay away from them by my CHN.

All babies, like older children and adults, react differently to everything. The best thing is to advise your friend to check with her health nurse, a GP or a good chemist. They can look at her child and advise her what is best.

I do the exact same thing for my 4 month old twins. It REALLY made a difference with their sleep. They even slept 5 and a half hours last night and they are sick.
My GP supports our decision, as does my DP's GP, both doctors see to the twins. They are still gaining weight, each about 600gms in the last month alone.
They do lots of wee's and poo's. They wind as normal and have no more wind issues than normal. We started doing this about 3 weeks ago and are VERY happy. Bubs were waking every 2-3 hours all day and night, sometimes every hour!
Saying all this, as a PP said, what works for one might not work for another!

To me sounds a bit like coffee in the day and de-caff at night - why not? If it works for them good on them, sleep deprivation can cause you to try anything!!

I don't think there would be a big problem with it, esp if bubs is tolerating both formulas well? Isn't it just imitating what nature does with breastfeeding anyway?? During the morning breastmilk is more watery and thin, quenching babies thirst mostly, and filling them up a little. And as the day progresses there is less milk, but a richer, creamier milk, getting bubs belly nice and full, ready for a big nights sleep?
I know lots of people talk about how you shouldn't swap formulas...but I know a few people who would get whichever was on special out of 3 different brands. The ingredients list were almost identical, and her CHN looked at this too, and had no problems with it.
