Can someone explain if high funtioning autism is the same as PDD-NOS :confused:

both are on the autism spectrum but im getting mixed responces from google that one site says there the same, and another saying there different:confused:

any info please?

Can you give me some more details about PDD please? What is it? I think I've heard of it but want to be sure.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) is a 'subthreshold' condition in which some - but not all - features of autism or another explicitly identified Pervasive Developmental Disorder are identified.
PDD-NOS is often incorrectly referred to as simply "PDD."
The term PDD refers to the class of conditions to which autism belongs. PDD is NOT itself a diagnosis,
while PDD-NOS IS a diagnosis. The term Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS; also referred to as "atypical personality development," "atypical PDD," or "atypical autism") is included in DSM-IV to encompass cases where there is marked impairment of social interaction, communication, and/or stereotyped behavior patterns or interest,
but when full features for autism or another explicitly defined PDD are not met.

My understanding (from studying a Education degree with a Special Needs minor and from experiencing special needs education first hand) PDD is like H&DsMummy said - NOT a conclusive DX!

Many HOSE's (Head of Special Education) have said to me that peads tend to give this DX when baffled about where the child's developmental delays fit into more specific DX's such as ASD (Austistic Spectrum Disorder).

Aspergers and Autism are BOTH on the ASD spectrum. Individuals with Aspergers are generally high functioning.

I have seen PDD DX's given to children who have severe epilepsy which has interfered with their global development or to a child who drowned and was ressucitated.

If you are NOT happy with the PDD dx's seek a second opinion! Although from my understanding some Peads do not like to DX ASD until children are a certain age as one the DX's is made it sticks with them for the REST OF THEIR LIVES.
