my bub will be 6 mnths old on 09/08 and has been sitting unsopported for about 3 weeks - started off falling to the side and backwards but now only falls back if very distracted or on purpose to get mummy or daddy's attention! he has always been quite strong and was itching to sit up for ages.
anyway, someone said that he should not be sitting unsupported unless he is capable of getting to that position himself ( i put him on the floor sitting) as it is bad for his spine.
there is no turning back now anyway - he wouldn't stand for it!! i have never heard such a thing before, so i was just curious to know of other mum's sitting experiences.

Can't say i've ever heard of it. I used to sit my son on the floor with some pillows around to catch him then i gradually started taking away the pillows - this is what everyone i know has done with their children and none of them have bad backs????

I was wondering when they started to try sitting up.... my little boy is nearly four months old and over the last few days he has really been trying to pull himself up when he is in his pram/car seat or even just lying in your arms....

I to have never heard that.... I had always thought that if they had the head control that was half the battle.... and besides you are always near by!

My son was probably around that age when i started sitting him up, maybe a bit younger even. Just put enought pillows or something around him to catch him when he falls.

My daughter is 4mo and sits with support of cushions. She tries to sit up by herself but doesn't quite have the strength. She gets mighty stroppy if I lie her down when she wants to sit.
