My Redcliffe Hospital Birth Experience

My pregnancy care at Redcliffe Hosptial was second to none, mostly due to two doctors, Elsa and Pauline and some great midwives, I cannot stress this enough - I was SO PLEASED that I had dropped out of hte private system to go to Redcliffe and had complete confidence in their team - they do great pregnancy care.

The birth on the other hand was horrific.

I am posting this for anyone considering using Redcliffe Hospital - my advice is, you will not be heard unless you shout, and if you don't shout, bad things happen.

After 14 hours of induced labour, one hour of pushing, midwife failed to notice that my cervix was the thing stopping the baby from coming out and had to call a doctor to figure this out. She also failed to notice that my epidural had come out - kept telling me I wasn't in pain, it was a tightening, or that if I am feeling a little pain, it is just the baby coming through the pelvis and no problem - could have punched her in the face.

Dr C-Section was on that night and told me I could sit there in teh same pain for two hours and try again or have an emergency c-section (didn't check if the epidural came out).

Emergency c-section and they couldn't get the spinal block in and I kept having contractions while the baby tried to tear open my cervix. Hallucenated (sp?) through the birth and the baby went to special care becuase he wasn't breathing well. When I said I was in pain I was told to toughen up and then the midwife looking after me asked me if I ever shut up - to which I started crying and didn't really stop for two days.

The big needle thing (canula?) they had in my hand backfired and sprayed blood all over me and the baby and when I said I didn't want another one (you can't lift it to breast height so breast feeding is all but impossible) they kept ignoring me until I shouted at them - and for that I got visited by the big boss doctor accompanied by his entire medical team and lectured about being rude to doctors and told I needed a psyche evaluation.

Got horrific shooting pains (not afterbirth pains - had them too) in the middle of the night and one of the midwives told me that was too bad and I should have had another horrible hand needle thing and walked out. The other midwife gave me another shot of morphine and I spent the next two days shivering and vomiting.

I barely saw him for days and when I did, they kept interrupting me - when I finally got him, he fed for six straight hours which was lovely but started me down the engorgement track I am now on.

Had my metal things removed from the scar yesterday and it started weeping and bleeding profusely, so I went to the doctor - and the reason for the weeping - is because I picked up a staf infection, probably at the hosptial - and maybe coming down with a urinary tract infection and possibly mastitis.

So, it's been awesome.... everyone keeps telling me not to think about hte birth and it will pass but I am having these awful flashbacks everytime I try to sleep - so I haven't slept in days and am now getting worried about PND.

That is how my birth at Redcliffe Hospital went.
