I am wondering if it is gross to wash my nappies & bibs together in one wash with Hot water. Trying to save on extra loads... therefore saving water. Dh says its gross. I am undecided. What do you guys think?

I say would say that yes it is gross IMO.. but that's only because i'm a clean freak and i'm weird
I reckon it's fine. I'm more for the environment these days. Just close this thread before Sopolicha gets on here, she's real funny about it and she'll make a point of getting up me for saying it's ok!

Ok. So even though its hot water.. killing all the germs its gross. Hmm. Ok. :o
I seriously think it's fine. The hotwater and the napisan/ washing powder kills everything, I don't know why anyone would worry.

Thats what I reckon too!!! Plus the sun aswell. I'll be interested to see the results in a few days. ( I'm still not quite game yet. :o )

Ahh yes but the velcro on them ruins some items of clothes. :(
I have been washing them with the towels but thats only once a week & by then some of the bibs are mouldy. I thought at least I could stop the mould by doing them with the nappies every 2nd night. I am not sure what is grosser... mould or poo!!

Try putting the velco bits together before putting the bibs into the wash

have you got a bra bag that you put the bibs into to stop the velcro getting to the clothes?
I don't think that I could put nappies in with bibs. It is probably fine, but it still grosses me out.
Actually, I think mould is grosser. At least the poo (and all its germs) has come FROM the baby. Mould is a foreign organism.
But I didn't vote, cause I use disposables and hence have no experience - sorry.

I think it's fine- but when I wash my pooey nappies I make sure that I've really rinsed them out well- so there's not really any poo on them anyway- and the sun is a great sanitizer!
Im assuming your nappies are poo free, so I dont think it is gross. They have already been soaked with napisan as well, yes? Im with X, mould is much much worse, it can make you and you're kids sick, it is nasty stuff.

hmmm...I wouldn't wash the bibs with the nappies...
but I'm just weird like Lauren :D
I am not sure what is grosser... mould or poo!!
OMG poo of course.....I would touch mould over poo anyday :o
But, yeah, it's bad health-wise anyway....STILL
The bra bag sounds like a great idea though

I just voted wrong. Oops.
I wouldn't do it... maybe if the nappies had been soaked in napisan and some kind of antiseptic as well, but I don't think hot water kills anything unless its boiling.
I dunno, we'll see when I have my bub. I'll probably just do separate medium/small loads though.

Use a lingerie bag you can get them for like $2 from your local cheapie store like Go-Lo or the likes !
I have to use this for my fleece nappies when i do a load so it comes in handy all around for these, my bra's & bibs !!!
I do my bibs in with my darks because Boof loves pumpkin & i was sick of my other clothes getting residue !
But yeah i wouldnt do them together but im also a freak when it comes to things like this !
I wash my machine out after a nappy wash :o :o
And then again after my sheets & towels on a Sunday to start a new week.
Yes i have OCD !!!!

Hun you might as well sooooo many of my friends have taken advantage of this at one time or another !!!
Ive cleaned a mates house top to bottom because him & his two mates were pigs & i refused to use their toilet while i was there unless i cleaned it which resulted in me cleaning everything !!!
Ive also scrubbed one of DP's mates floors cause he hadnt cleaned it since he wiped it down after grouting 6mths earlier !!!!! It needed to be cleaned so it was a sterile environment to tattoo so up came my sleeves & i scrubbed away. He loved me after that & offered to pay me as his cleaner LOL !
I voted yes (in prep for being a cloth nappier) as I figure if I'm not washing nappies well enough to get rid of poo germs I wouldn't want them on a bubs bot anyway! But I can totally see it as a psychological gross out, maybe I will change my mind once I see the things first hand!

I don't do it. I wash the nappies separately in a small load every couple of days.
I soak my bibs and manky clothes in a bucket of napisan as soon as they get dirty, stops the mould. Then on wash day I chuck the whole bucket in with the normal washing.
It probably is okay, there is not that much poo really on the nappies is there? When you think about the amount of water that the clothes get rinsed in, surely it must flush it all out.

i agree with bluegin - if the nappies come out clean, then anything mixed in with them should come out clean, right?

I chuck his little pants in with the nappies, if they get wet or soiled.
So I guess in theory I would probably chuck bibs in there too (no need for bibs in this house yet).
Like someone else said, the poo gets rinsed off anyway, and if the nappies come out clean enough to put on baby's bum, I'd say the bibs would come out clean enough too.
But to be honest I think I'd wash bibs in with normal clothes, or with tea-towels. I have a "clothes" basket and a "manchester/linen" basket, so I guess I'd chuck the bibs in there, but wash them with the clothes if I didn't have enough m/l to warrant a load.

I do a pre-wash rinse of the nappies & then they get washed with either towels, or everything depending on how much washing there is to do.
WE ARE IN A DROUGHT PEOPLE! Buy what they call hygenic wash for the load as well as your napisan and laundry detergent if your that worried.
We're going to have no water in QLD in 8 years time, save as much as you can

I say gross, only cause I would worry about germs.....You wipe the bubs mouth with a bib.....
I wont wash tea towels with undies either!!!
:)
oooh I stuffed up .. I was answering NO it isn't gross .. I didn't read the question .. so .. sorry .. I stuffed your poll ..
I figure that a) I use detergent b) I rinse pooey nappies.. so the nappies I wash are either only wet.. or already rinsed and c) I hang my washing out .. and sunlight kills LOADS of stuff..
I personally would tell my DH .. that if he had a problem .. to wash it all himself :p  - but that is just mMY opinion .. lol

I don't think it's gross  I wash all our stuff together - I figure if it isn't clean enough for me to wear, why would I want DD to wear it?

I would wash the bibs and nappies together. The nappies are rinsed of poo before they go into the nappy bucket let alone the washing machine, so I really don't see the problem.
If I want to do a load of nappies and don't have a full load I just grab a handful of my clothes and chuck them in too!;)

Oh good so I'm not as gross as DH thinks after all.
Yes, we are in a drought. Thats why I was asking!! ;) And poo is removed prior!! :D
Thanks for all your feedback!!
I think if you line dry afterwards it's fine. Sun is the best germ killer out.

Yes Becky, you can wash your baby things in peace
this is as crazy as asking whether you rinse your dishes after washing them.....
So where is this 'We're in a drought' b/s coming from
If you're either washing the bibs with your clothes or with your nappies...where is the difference on water consumption?
And if the load is too small for a 'large' load...don't most people have washing machines where you can adjust the water level.....
Ahhhh I'm so lucky I don't live in a commune ;)

I agree!!!!!
I'm gonna put another q to you all. .... do you wash your undies with your shirts?? Cos if you do the amount of residue LEFT on the bibs after a wash with nappies is the SAME as the residue on your shirts, and I know MY Son chews on my shirt sleeves so isn't it just the same????
As long as the nappies are pre-treated I always use them to bulk out a wash .... that is they go in with the towels unless there is notenough in the clothes wash and I will put them in. The towels take up TOO much room where as the cloth nappies don't really.
Nope not gross if you are using a decent detergent (ie not one of those magnetic ball thingies). Warm to hot water and line drying is a bonus. I doubt there'd be any poo germs left after going through all that even without napisan or any other sanitiser. But mould...yuk!
We haven't encountered this problem yet because I used to throw DS's bibs into a smalls bag so the velcro wouldn't catch anything else. I do sometimes wash nappies with clothes.
I don't think it is too gross at all, in fact I do the same thing (after the nappies have been presoaked of course)...and besides with level 3 water restrictions...WHY NOT? I mean we all have to think about the planet at some stage!
