Every disposable I have tried has stunk to high heaven of chemicals. I bought BabyLove the other day and almost vomited at the smell of them! I cant bring myself to put them on DD.

I am using cloth, but like sposies for convenience. Is there any that dont stink?

Can't say I have a problem with the smell of them.... are you sensitive to smells normally? We use snugglers normally. Have you tried looking at some of the bio degradable ones? There are several about but they are a lot more pricey than regular ones.

I must say I have never smelt anything in a nappy besides wee and poo :D

We use Huggies and I have never smelt chemicals on them. Not sure what you are smelling.

I know what you mean, I can smell it too. I find huggies to be the worst...

The only ones that don't have the smell that I have found, is aldi mammia nappies, they are great. Half the price of huggies and even more absorbent imo.

:confused:i agree, babylove nappies stink:barf:! there the only ones that ive noticed had a strong smell.. i still use them when there on special, he's never had a reaction to them.
i think its the glue they use to stick them together..

I must be weird... even as a cloth bummer I like the smell of disposable nappies. Or more, the absense of a wee/poo smell. Its been an adjustment for me that I can very clearly smell bubbas wees with the cloth nappies - but I suppose that means that there aren't chemicals overpowering the smell of wee.

I also like the smell of fresh paint and car fumes, so really my point of veiw is already messed up

Oh and dont ever use homebrand nappies. I was caught up in a flurry of being thrift and saving money so I thought I'd give them a whirl and bub got the worst rash he's ever had from them everywhere on his bum, front and hips, started from the 2nd nappy change with them on and it was about 8 hours before I could get him out of them and he was red, raw and had bits a broken skin. Nasty chemicals I suppose. I emailed them a very angry letter and I didn't get a good response, just a "we've forwarded your concerns to the manufacter"

Thats interesting I was reading Choice magazines testing on disposables and they didn't test as being as absorbant as some of the more popular ones

I have never smelt the chemical smell you are describing OP generally speaking when using disposables we use nature babycare ones or huggies without any dramas

there is a allegedly more 'natural' nappy that is sold in Woolworths, I've forgotten the name of it now.. nature's child or something? (I coudl be making that up). But it is made by some scandinavian woman who 'decided the world needed a better nappy'.

Apparently doesn't have any of the bleaches etc.

I used them on DS until very recently when I decided I was too poor and am trialing him on some of the most budget nappies. I think they are about $21 for 32 of the 10-15 kg size.

(I am utterly sleep deprived this morning so all facts and figures may be a bit off)

I find that so strange, I think they are brilliant. I had to buy huggies last week and she has woken up wet every morning. :(. Maybe it is a fit thing

We have been using Huggies since our son was born (he is 5 months old) and have never had a leak.

I actually just went and had a smell of my babylove nappies and can't smell anything :D

Babylove are the only nappies that don't leak in this house. I tried those nature ones from woolies and she was peeing straight out of the side of them.

I guess Huggies is the best but seriously I think people are crazy spending that much money on something that is just going to be filled with pee and poo :p

Mrs Nietzsche

YOu know maybe it is all about the fit.

I stopped using the nature ones crazymama abot... 6 weeks ago?

Had *never* had a leak or problem with htem.

THen I had to use one at Mum's the other day as she still has them on hand, and DS did a wee that went straight out the side.

He has grown a fair bit so maybe they weren't fitting any more.

My policy has always been with DS that if he starts leaking, go up a size - even if its into another brand that is just a little bigger it always seems to fix the leaks.

I know the smell the OP means too! My bub is a cloth bum but lately we have used disposables for night time and they do smell funny! Everytime I go and feed her during the night I have thought she has done a poo, but no, it's just the smell of the nappy. We have used Aldi and Huggies at night, both smell in my opinion. Maybe it's something you just get used to?? But because I haven't used disposables in so long I can't smell them?
Sorry I can't help you, I am yet to use a disposable that didn't have that smell about them but would be interested to hear if someone knows the answer. I never thought/realised the smell was the chemicals in them, but you could possibly be right on that.

HI,

If you look online you can find Moltex, and seven generation nappies and bambo nature all are not chemically bleached and use less chemicals then the rest. I have never been able to find them in a bricks and morter store. All eco-freindly nappies cost more than "noraml "store bought nappies. We have tried both seven generation and moltex but out little one does not like the fit or the feel of them. You can also get enneie weenies (i thin thats what they are called) and you put a disposable pad in them. We use Bambo nature and find them very good. We use them as a kinda compromise becuase we are on tank water we can not use cloth full time as we use all our drinking water washing nappies.

We use seventh gen for disposables as well, I don't notice a particular smell with them, but I don't find huggies offensive either. I think woolworths carries seventh gen, at least in my area.

Chel I agree, it takes a bit of getting used to the wee smell with cloth, but I don't notice it really now. I love those chemically smells too!

I remember winding the window down at the petrol station as a kid and breathing deeply

Hmmm, I must have a very strong sense of smell because when I opened these nappies they smelt horrid.

Maybe it was the plastic packet? Because I find that stinks also but then the nappies don't bother me.

Blueberry Crumble
21-09-2009, 10:25
nah, it is the nappies. Another one I find stinks really bad is the Toys R Us Brand. They are vile also!

Mrs Nietzsche
21-09-2009, 10:29
Lol. Well they are pretty disgusting things. I only find the nappies stink if they are really overloaded with wee, it's only happened a couple of times.

I often think how unpleasant they must be to wear. I actually briefly considered in an idle moment starting a thread 'do you wear nappies and are they awful' but realised nobody would answer it (thinking of the adult nappies).

He just wondering if you have tried the new pampers nappies? They sell them at coles. They are scented with a pretty smell. Still on our first packet we use MCNs (only use disposables at night) but haven't had a leak yet (Cross fingers) huggies have never leak for us either though. Google pampers nappies for more details. You couldn't pay me to put a disposable nappy on my child BUT if we ever had to we have a pack of biodegradable ones that don't have any chemicals in them and are unbleached etc etc. They've been in the cupboard so long I don't remember what they're called but as soon as DD wakes up from her nap I'll go and have a look for you.

I don't get any smell at all from my clothies - and especially the overnight ones, when I take them off her in the morning and she's been weeing in them all night, they still smell fresh and soft and lovely like they should.

Disposable nappies make me :barf: and there's no way you'd catch me putting all those chemicals near by baby's beautiful delicate little bottom.

 me too. how horrible is it! I wont let bubba do that. I'll brain wash him and tell him how gross and awful it is

The the nappies, its a fresh wee smell, he's mainly breast fed so his wees and poos aren't very offensive, but I can smell it quite clearly. I'm getting used to it already and we've only been back in cloth full time for a bit over a fortnight.

I guess at the end of the day to the OP if you want chemical free, why not give cloth a whirl? Its not as time consuming or difficult as it seems. Bub doesn't wear any disposables anymore - used to use them when we went out because I used terries, but I use Baby Beehind AIOs and they're so easy I don't see the point in disposables anymore.

I use babylove for overnight nappies and I've noticed that there are some that smell and some that don't. The ones we use are Infant size, and yet in that size there seems to be one sort that look really cheap and nasty and smell highly "perfumed", and then there's ones that look wider, are lovely and soft, and don't smell at all. These ones have the "poopoo pouch" advertised on the pack.

I used to use huggies, and the smell you are talking about is exactly why I changed to cloth! It's an awful plasticy strong smell.

I hate to think what is in those disposable nappies. Even if it isn't huggies etc.. all disposables would need SOME chemical to absorb the wee etc to make sure it doesn't leak!

You'd be hard pressed finding a nappy that doesn't stink of chemicals I would say, as they actually DO have chemicals in them.

I do use cloth, but I like the occasionaly sposie for convenience. I have discovered yesterday that Woolworths Select ones dont stink. I wish they were the same as they used to be though, I loved them when they came in the boxes!

Disposable nappies have more than 65 chemicals in them and that includes modulated plastics.

They're disgusting.

OK ladies, I have bought Nature Baby Care from Woolies and I haveto say I am IMPRESSED! They are exy, but I only use sposies at night and going out, so that is ok.

NO chemical smell!!! ANd no deep elastic leg indents like we get with other nappies. They seem to be doing a great job :)

I've used those ones as well - they're nice, aren't they? Yes, a bit exy but worth it especially if you're not using sposies all that much.

Huggies arent so bad I don't think.....nor the Woolies Select ones.
