Everyone is going to say that I'm crazy to be sitting here on the computer when my gorgeous DS has just been taken to hospital 20 minutes ago. But I need a little support.
My baby boy started coughing on Thursday at midday. By 2.30 he had a temp of 38.5, and by 5.00 we were at the medical centre (our GP is on holidays). The medical centre dr gave us a prescription for antibiotics, which we got immediately, after she said not to get them until Monday (ha!). She also gave us a urine sample bag, as DS frequently has UTI's. Poor DS didn't do much wee, until today.
So anyway... today DS was VERY SICK. We called the Sydney After Hours Medical Service, who come out for house calls after hours. That was at 5pm. By 10pm, they hadn't arrived, and Jack was very laboured in his breathing. With every exhale, he coughed and cried. On top of all of this, he also has conjunctivitis, so is very teary.
DH and I decided at 10.10pm that he needed to go to the hospital, as he was so uncomfortable, and we were scared.
Would you say that we overeacted? And at what point would you go to the hospital with your bub? Just curious.
And who has had a bub with a terrible chest infection? I've not seen him like this before. The look of pain in his eyes....
Im assuming that your DH has taken him? It is so scary when they get really sick, if I was you, unless you have other children that need taking care of and you cant get a sitter, I would be heading up to the hospital right now, not only for your own peace of mind, but your DS will be needing you, when they are sick they only want mum, even more so in a strange place with all these people poking and prodding you.
Go to him and we will be here for you when you get back :hugs:
Oh hun, I hope he's ok.
I would go down there, I hate not knowing what's going on, so I would have dropped my kids off to someone and gone with him. Like coops said kids usually want their mummy when they aren't feeling the best!
Oh :hugs: hugs to you. That must have been scary. My DS who is also called Jack is at the end of a chest infection. Fortunately the antbiotics worked very well for him. By the sound of it your little man was much sicker than mine. I definately would have done the same thing in taking him to the hospital. I would rather wait for an hour or so in emergancy than have something go wrong later on at home.
I hope your little man is alright. May he get better quickly.
Take Care, Peta

I am at home with our other 3 children who are asleep. DH's parents live 2 hours north, and my parents live 2 hours south, so will have to wait until tomorrow for me to be able to go in.
DH has taken him in as he had more sleep last night than I did (not uncommon here).
God I wish I was there.
Oh that sucks :( Is there not any friends close by who could cone and stay with ur kids while they sleep??
If not, try and get some sleep tonight and see if u can get to the hospital first thing in the morning!
Oh you poor thing, it is so hard when things like this come up and you have more than one child to take care of, make sure your dh keeps you up to date on what is happening.
I understand what it is like to have noone on call to mind your children, so just try and get some rest and see if your parents can be there first thing to watch the other littlies for you.

Have just got off the phone to DH, and he has just been put on the nebuliser, and is happy watching Hi5 on the Starlight TV. He has ordered me to sleep, and Mum is already in the car so
Thanks everyone. Us Mothers should be given medals daily!
Have you got any friends that would mind sleeping over tonight?
Hope all goes well and you can ring the hospital yourself to get updates.Try not to worry yourself sick, he is in the right place. My little fella, he's 5 now,but when he was 12 months,he had pneumonia around his heart muscles. It went undiaognosed by doctors for a week but he was ok after a short visit to hospital on a antibiotic drip. Also everything seems 10 times worse at night, hopefully he ( and you) will be perkier tommorow.
Good Luck. Btw you have not over reacted.
Huge hugs to you hun!!
I hope he makes a speedy recovery and comes home soon!!!

Your boy will be fine. I hate when they have to go to hospital. I think you definitely made the right decision. Better safe than sorry. My DD had a UTI when she was 5 months old and it was horrible. She had regular check ups afterwards and tests to rule out reflux which can possibly damage the Kidneys. Tests ruled out reflux. Not trying to scare you, but if he has had a few UTIs maybe ask for tests to rule out Reflux, and put your mind at ease.
Takecare and rest. I'm sure your little man is in good hands!

Yep Ive been in that situation about three times this year.....and its awful, you did not overeact!
I hope your son gets better soon and that the meds they have him on dont effect him to much (they make my son go psycho! no joke he starts crying hystericaly, biting himself and furniture, he becomes this totally different child!)
I would also advise that after he gets well you try and boost his immune system as its usually when they are run down they are prone to infections and then get very sick etc
I give my son a homeopathic meds fom our natropath, plus cod liver oil and a multivitamin plus we have him on a strict diet with lots of foods with high levels of antioxidants etc
Goos luck and :hugs: to your son!

Sutherland Hospital........ Need I say any more?
DH came home with Jack at 1.30am. The dr was not at all helpful. Nobody checked his urine, despite my DH telling them that he has a history of UTI's and two sisters with high grade Kidney Reflux GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
He pretty much cried with every breath, until I called the After Hours dr again at 6.45 this morning. And we are STILL WAITING! Everybody is exhausted, especially poor DH and Jack. Thankfully Mum is taking the other three out this afternoon.
Thanks to those who have helped me last night. I was petrified, and it was too late to call friends with young children for advice.
Does anybody know what the difference is between Bronchitis and Bronchiolitis? And what are the symptoms of the two?

The Drs told me that bronchiolits cannot be treated with any antibiotics as it is viral. It affects their breathing and when they breathout it sounds like a rattle in the chest. They gave me a fact sheet on the illness and it is at its worst between days 3-5, and you must keep the fluids up to them constantly.
Bronchiolitus affects babies under 1 yr of age
I hope i make sence, if you want to know more google it under pages from Australia and theirs heaps on there

bronchitis is inflammation of the large airways.
Bronchiolitis is inflammation of the small airways, which is more serious for babies bexcause it does result in laboured breathing. DD has just gotten over it, There is no antibiotics that can treat it. If he isnt feeding or having frequent urines you need to k eep him hydrated to avoid dejhyradation.
Hydralyte/water anything can help. But if he is a bubs you will need to give by medicine droppere as babies prefer milk.
Be awarwe that these kind of illnesses can also result in gastro. So if he starts vomitting or have diaoharra(sp??) reduce the amount of milk and keep going with the hyrdalyte/water. Bubs might be sleepy latere on so let him sleep n when he wakwes keepo giving him fluid.
best of luyck and hope he gets well.
also bronchiolitis is VERY infectious so keep the kids away from him to avoid your other kids getting sick.

Okay. The dr has just left, and has confirmed Bronchiolitis and asthma. Funny you should mention Gastro, because Jack has had diaorrhea all morning, and is frequently in hospital with Rotavirus. So now I'm off to the chemist to buy Ventolin, a spacer, and a vapouriser.
So, there's nothing that can be done for Bronchiolitis?

Nope :(
If stuffy nose, keep it very clear and baby balsam might be able to help too.
.
Gastro is yuck. :(
My DS2 had bronchiolitis at 6 weeks old, the treatment is oxygen in hospital if needed and staying hydrated. He had the RSV so was very contagious. Anti-biotics don't help. He was very little so we did frequent breastfeeds and he was in hospital on oxygen for 4 days. In hospital they also sucked the mucus out of his nose to aid in breathing and feeding plus saline drops. Not much else can be done. You could use the aspirator thing that comes the saline drops to clear his nose.
But in combination with asthma the treatment may be different.
Hope yuor boy gets betters soon :fingerscrossed:
