View Full Version : Peanut butter in pregnancy?
Hi all, well today the horrid feelings have started to hit. No major sickness, just all over horridness (boy do I wish for a return of the stomach and back cramps instead :o) One of the major things is headache,
anyhoo, I had a peanut butter sandwich which made me feel a bit better, then I panicked. Is peanut butter safe in pregnancy? Or does it cause allergies in kids?
Thanks,
Gin

I thought I would just add my experience about peanut butter during pregnancy.
When I was pregnant with my first son (who will be turning 4 next week) I ate peanut butter for breakfast nearly everyday. I had the same worries as you and asked my Dr if it was Ok to eat it while pregnant and she said yes.
Anyway, my son ended up being allergic to peanuts and I have heard now that you shouldn't eat it during pregnancy just in case. Bit late!!!
With my 2nd pregnancy I didn't eat any peanut products at all and he has been tested and isn't allergic to peanuts.
I am currently pregnant with my 3rd baby and I haven't been eating any peanut products during this pregnancy either.
I have heard if you have other children with peanut allergies you shouldn't eat them while pregnant.
It may all be a coincidence though.

Thanks Sally, well if there is any chance then I think I will stay on the side of caution and avoid it in great quantities. Maybe just occasionally?
Note: for me "squeezyness" = "queasyness" I just find the 2nd word makes me feel squeezy..:p
That horrible queeziness is shocking isn't it, but then it can also be a good sign (trying to look on the bright side!) 29 weeks pregnant now and on a daily thank god I'm still hanging in there after already being in hospital last week with blood pressure, contractions and way too much fluid around baby.
Got the morning sickness back so bad at the moment that I can't keep anything down, even a mouthful of water. Worse thing is I'm an insulin dependant diabetic and need to eat six meals a day to keep my blood sugars level. However, every time I eat I chuck :barf: then the sugars drop again and then I need to eat again so i don't go hypoglyceamic which can lead to fits and coma. Definitely the last one, my poor little one (15 months) can't understand why mummy's no fun anymore.

I heard it should only be avoided if theres a history of allergies. I ate a little bit of PB when pregnant, but was quite aware of the risk and limited it to only the worst cravings that hit.
Oh Margaret, that sounds like a really vicious :barf:cycle there! :hugs: You must look forward to having your bub out and safe! And then you 15m.o. can have fun (but tired :p) Mummy back!
No more squeezy feeling for me though, so back to paranoia! LOL, my own vicious cycle!
Kat, that sounds like good advice. No history of allergies, so I will limit to desperate cravings only, let's hope I just don't crave it!
I hope it's ok, I Have been living on it during both my pregnancies;)
(DD is fine by the way:thumbsup: )

I have read eating to many peanut prducts during pregancy can cause allergies... but in moderation is fine.
I eat peanut butter, probably once a week. But it's not on my overly concerned list of things to worry about.
Thanks Chrissy, lovely belly pic by the way  I am very jealous!

Weird.... nahhhhhh never, normal for me :D
Hi. My situation is similar to 3spunkyboys. During my first pregnancy I ate the odd bit of peanut butter. Twice I had satay too, then felt really weird afterwards - hot flushes, trouble breathing etc. My son was born with allergy to peanuts, eggs and shellfish.
The allergist highly recommended that I stay away from ALL nut products during this pregnancy as they're not sure yet if eating nuts during pregnancy has a direct link to a child's potential to have nut allergy. It has been a bit awkward, but I feel that it's much better to be cautious for 9 months, than have a child with a nut allergy for life.
Hope that wasn't too negative, but having a child with an allergy is really difficult for everyone - especially them!
