Sorry i know there was another thread yesterday about this, and it has answered some questions, except one.

My DS has been retracting the skin back for a short time when in the bath, for maybe a months or 2 and it doesn't seem to worry him too much. But I figured because he is doing that he needs to clean it from now on.

So I have encouraged him to pull the skin back and wash around it with just water, but when I have tried to get him to, he gets quite upset and doesn't want to even touch it when it is pulled back. Fair enough I say, but I am worried that if he doesn't clean it probably, an infection could occur. I've just let it go, but I a bit worried about it.

Anyone help with this please?

Found this for you:

"Usually starting around the age of 5 or 6, boys should be taught to retract their own foreskins once a week and rinsing with warm water. Sometimes the separation process takes longer and a boy may not be able to fully retract his foreskin until he is 10 or more. This is normal and not cause for alarm. Once the foreskin is retractable , the instructions for cleaning are simple. 1.) Gently pull the foreskin back.
2.) Rinse with warm water only. Soap under the foreskin can cause irritation and swelling.
3.) Pull the foreskin back in place over the head of your penis.
No one should do this for him. He can pull the foreskin back by himself gently. After rinsing, he simply pulls the foreskin back into place."

If he's pulling it back in the bath, then that's all he needs to do. There's no need foranthing further. He's doing it instinctively himself.

The Paediatric surgeon where I work advised us to tell Mum's to do nothing. Just let them "play" in the bath. Some boys play more, others play less. Some retract the foreskin quite early, others don't for some years. Unless there's a problem, such as an irritation, infection or bulging of the foreskin with the passing of urine, then do nothing.
