Shoes are really the one area with babies' and children's clothes where it is impossible to generalise.
My 5 month old is already wearing age 6 -18 month socks, and has been for weeks.
You'd probably do well to go to a shoe shop or shoe department and measure his foot.
Andrew was a 4 when we bought his first pair of shoes at 12 months. But he grew out of them so quickly he was in size 5 a few weeks later and now is just about ready for a 6!
If they are cheap enough, I'd get a few different sizes. You can always re-sell them if they don't fit.

Getting the right first shoes is really important. I highly recommend you have your bub's feet looked at before buying any shoes. So many foot problems in teenagers and adults are caused by ill-fitting shoes as toddlers/children.
DD has horrible feet, she was size 5 before 12 months old, and now shes basically a size 6:eek: ...I was told not to even put shoes on her, as the soft soled shoes generally stop at size 4 and its bad for thier development to put them in hard soled shoes when thier still learning to walk steadily. Even before she was a size 5, no shoes would fit her, she has flat kinda, wide, twisted...duck feet:rolleyes: ...thier identical to DH's which are horrible now because they wernt fixed as a child..she goes to a peadiatrition(sp?) soon thank god.
Anyhow that was a bit off topic..just be careful buying shoes, because all different brands differ in sizes, even in stores like target and big w. You wouldnt want her having problems down the line from ill-fitting shoesies

Every baby is different so I would definatly get the size checked at a kids shoe shop. Size 1 is supposed to fit 0-12 weeks and my little boy - now 17 weeks - is still a few centimetres off fitting into them even though he is quite tall!

For their first pair of shoes, you are better off going to a shoe shop and buying a new pair. Then after they outgrow those, I would start using second hand ones.
Matthew was a size 6 when he started walking at 13mths, whereas my friends 13mth old was still in a size 3, so it's hard to judge sizes by age.
Average size would be 4 but it does vary!

I recently read an article in the HBF magazine that stated that young children shouldn't really wear shoes until they are 3 years old.
Evidently, it is important that they expereince a lot of time bare foot to help develop their muscles in their feet.
I would stick to socks as much as possible if anything.

my DS has a few pairs of pre-walker shoes but he pretty much lives in socks and bare feet coz he knows how to take his shoes off lol
he is 14 months and is a size 4 he is a few months off a size 5 i think ( i brought a pair of size 5 shoes thinking he had outgrown his size 4 but found the size 5 too big lmao)

Isn't it silly how different brands are different sizes?? There should be a standard size for shoes.

Yep, I'll definately second that. There are just so many adults keeping podiatrist's in business because of poor-fitting and/or second-hand shoes when they were children.:)
