View Full Version : Clicking jaw/TMJ
Mine clicks when I yawn,on the right side, and clicks on the left when I chew food on the right side of my mouth. It's not painful, just annoying. My doctor is sending me for a CT scan to see whats up.
Has anyone had/have this? Just wondering what,if any, treatment you had?
TIA

My DH had a motorcycle accident which resulted in his TMJ. Three orthodontists he saw said there was little they could to do remedy it and that his jaw had already worn away.
Not sure if this helps. But I thinkt he sooner you get it sorted the better

Mine clicked. At first it was just annoying, but after a while got painful.
For me, the cause was grinding my teeth in my sleep... and this making my jaw out of whack (not properly "in line").
My GP told me to go to the dentist, who did all the tests and then figured it out.
I had something moulded... it looked a lot like a mouth guard sport-players wear, only it was very hard (not gummy) and a bit different. It made grinding harder to do, and thus prevented me damaging my jaw any further.
Thanks for your replies:)
UmmInayah, Sorry to hear your DH's jaw couldn't be fixed....Does he have pain now as a result?
SassyMummy,do you have to wear the guard every night? Would you mind telling me how much it cost?

Yup, I had this for YEARS. Turns out my jaw had always been slightly out of alignment, since childhood in fact, and the ligaments at one side of my jaw had shortened, whilst those on the other side had lengthened.
I got some really good osteopathic/chiropractic treatment on it, and whilst the ligaments will never be perfect, my jaw doesn't click (or hurt) anymore :)
my jaw used to click... it wasnt too painful... but then i started to be able to pop it out of place, dislocating it... to start with it was painful and annyoing... but it went back in by itself... it ended up getting stuck somtimes later on... and then got the point that i could dislocate it on command so to speak...
had heaps of appointments with docs and specialists... in the end they gave me the option of having my jaw broken and replaced and then having my jaw wired shut for however long it took to heal... or having braces...
needless to say i shose the braces... it took 3 years to fix, was because of an overbite, grinding teeth etc... nad my jaw was out of alignment...
i hope yours isnt too serious and gets fixed relatively quickly and painlessly... but just keep in mind to search around for alternative options if you face something your not too sure about...

i too had this... i now have a retainer, or plate that i have to wear at night on my bottom and top teeth!!!
it is similiar to a mouth gaurd but keeps teeth, jaw etc in the right spot, keeps the teeth from moving back to where they used to be...
im not too sure about the cost... but i dont think that theyre cheap...
mine was done through and orthodontas though.
I have this too! In fact I'm clicking it right now because it hurts and I can't help it! I've had it for one and a half years - one night it just started and it never went away, just got worse.
I have no idea what to do:confused:. I haven't had time to go to a public dentist, I don't have money to go to a private one.....And all the other specialists? They'd cost sh!tloads wouldn't they?
Thanks Tam-I-Am,glad your jaw is ok now.Did you need many sessions of treatment?
Emi... at your story!... I'm actually quite worried about mine getting stuck when I'm yawning,I have images of myself with my mouth hanging open all day long and drooling as a consequence lol. That must have been awful to go through. You're all fixed now then?
Salam,I assume they would cost a bomb...I rang up for a price for the CT scan today, and it's almost $250! But apparently I get all but $50 back from Medicare, but I can't really afford that amount up front at the moment, but I guess I'm going to have to if I want to get this sorted asap.I hope you can work something out to get yours fixed.

Umm...from memory I had about 10 sessions (and it occassionally still needs work - like I said the ligaments have shortened on one side, so it's still problematic, but MUCH better), but I was also getting other work done at the same time, so it didn't seem like that big a deal at the time :)

My jaw has clicked for a few years now, but recently (since being pregnant or round abouts) my jaw is now locking up, especially when I yawn or eat. Sometimes I have to use my hand to knock it back into place. Its really embarrassing when it happens in public.
I cannot afford to go to a specialist or dentist right now. Actually Ive never been to a dentist! :(
As well as my jaw locking.. I was born with a clicky hip, well now my hip joint pops occasionally and I would have to say thats more painful than my jaw locking.
Rockett - thanks, but that's the thing, I just don't have the money, I just have to live in pain *sigh*
Lauren, like you, I don't have the money, luckily mine doesn't lock up yet which is good.
Dentists cost so much! Why????????!!!!!!
It sucks, doesn't it.I haven't been to a dentist for years either because of the cost.
Ouch Lauren:(

I'm MEANT to wear it every night.
I DON'T wear it because it annoys me and I can't get to sleep with it in... because all I do is lick it and bite it and am so very conscious of it being there...
I was lucky in that my mother paid for it when I was a bit younger... it cost about $400.
EEK,that's expensive! Thanks:)

I have TMJ, lately I've been getting lots of headaches (my job is talking on the phone all day which agitates my jaw), my jaw clunks in and out of place and locks quite often.
In the past I saw a dentist, they made a mouthguard for me to wear at night but my wisdom teeth came through and have shifted my teeth so its too tight. Plus when I did wear it at night didn't seem to help a lot and would wake up with it not in my mouth.
I used to see a Chiropractor who would use an applicator device on my jaw and massage/cracking which helped but then I moved and the new chiro I saw was crap. I also tried a local physio who didn't help and became too expensive.
My jaw is pretty bad and I keep putting off seeing someone but I don't know who I should see and I've been told numerous times that there is no long term fix. I've been told about breaking my jaw and resetting this but no guarantees and seems like an expensive exercise if I don't get results?
I'd love to have it fixed though, today I've taken 2 lots of Nurofen+ to help with my pain, its annoying :(

.
i had braces for years, and it involved an apt every couple of weeks to change elastics over etc... it was like having my jaw wired shut, but removable... if that makes sense???
my jaw is very good now compared to what it was like! i can no longer dislocate it at all! THANKFULLY!!! it still clicks ocassionally when i yawn... but its very rarely and doesnt hurt anymore!!!
in winter or on cold days it is always worst... and when im tired it clicks and can get a little painful...
but it is heaps better then living with what i was!!!
having your jaw dislocate and pop back in isnt the nicest feeling, and having it dislocate and NOT go back in is even worse!!!
i was in year 8 when i was able to do this so i would have been... 13/14 years old and am now 21...
to op- i hope yours doesnt get as bad as mine did!!!
Thanks for your responses ladies:)...it seems like it's a fairly common thing.
Mine hasn't been too bad today, but I must admit I'm getting a bit scared that it will lock up....most of you have said this has happened.I'm trying so hard to not yawn too big,but I can't really stop it lol.
Lilysmummy,I'd rather have the click too lol!
Misheycat, sorry to hear that you're in pain.I think I'd be a bit iffy too about the resetting if there are no guarantees it will fix it.
Emi,thanks.I hope mine doesn't get too bad either! I haven't made my scan appointment yet, will probably go next week as $$ are a bit tight atm.
Thanks again all:)
no probs!!!
good luck! hope the news is good and that its easily fixed without to much cost!!!

When I started to grind my teeth .. it hurt like hell! I went to an orthodontist and recommended a custom-made/boiled night guard. He told me it would cost like $300-400.00!!!! I went online to search for more affordable night guards. I read reviews on Dentek/Splintek/Doctor's Brand and they seemed okay. I needed something quickly during that time .. because I was fearing TMJ. I finally found a company by the name of 'TotalGard'. They had some great night guards. I am still wearing my 'StressGard' and my grinding is no longer with me. I hope this helps.
