The first nappy i ever changed was my DS's. So it was all a new and big experience for me. so i hope i dont come off as a bit ditzy because i dont know much about it all....
So i wondering if the consistency of his poos are normal? He is 3mths old and is exclusively BF. and they are runny with a few 'curds' in them - i know that he wouldnt be passing firm poos, but have been wondering.
He does pass wind alot too and when he poops, he will strain a little and release this hug wet fart. he probably only 2 poopy nappies a day (but some times only 1 - like today).
does this sound normal? because if they are normal - how do people know when a bub has diarrhea?
Sounds COMPLTELY normal. Don't be worried if he goes a week without pooing, it's normal for breastfed babies. DD went 8days once.
Umm to answer your diarrhea question. Hmm maybe if he's nappies are always full of poo. If he is doing more wet poos more than usual..you'll know...lol
I still don't know when my ds has diarrhoea. Last time he had gastro I didn't realise til I thought in retrospect after I got it!
My ds did up to 8 runny and explosive poo's a day for the first few months. The term poo-nami was a new term for me but definitely described some of his nappies.
He's nearly 3 and he still has soft poo's a lot - we still need to keep it that way cause if he has even slightly firm poo it means he's constipated and his reflux will play up.
My DH's friend is a doctor and told us to worry only if the poo doesn't cling/ soak into the nappy as it's most likely to be diarrhoea .

The poo sounds normal to me too! Also the straining and wet farting is exactly what my DS does.
My DS had diarrhoea a couple of weeks ago. Trust me, you will know. I changed his nappy about 12 times in 12 hours and each time it was full of poo!

Runny is perfectly normal.
I had a friend change bubs nappy when he was 3 months old and her daughter at the time was about 1 year old and she'd totally forgotten newborn poos and said "i dont want to alarm you but he had really bad diarrhea" Aside from black meconium poos, bubbas poos had never looked any different to just slightly watery quiet custardy yellow slop (sorry :barf: TMI)
Which occasionally looked like it had rice in it, but obviously he'd not been fed grains of rice... but aparently thats normal too.
I used to change around 10-30 nappies every work day (childcare nursery) seen it all, nothing shocks me anymore... and as long as its not changing suddenly, its all pretty normal.

My 3 month old DD can have poos that range from pumpkin soup looking, curds, bright green, seeded mustard and basil pesto (exactly like pesto :barf:after we'd just had pesto pasta for dinner). She still poos up to 6 or more times per day. All normal- except the green is because she has been feeding like crazy with a growth spurt.
She had diarrhea for a few weeks as a NB and she could poo 3 times in one feed, it was incredibly watery and contained a small amount of blood. She never, ever had a just wet nappy in those days.

 a litte Off Topic here, but I couldnt help laughing at your thread title.
Before having a baby, I could not imagine EVER having conversations with a whole load of women about Poo.
But on having bubs, I found myself talking about Poo on a very regular basis on bubhub, at mothersgroup, with various friends with children, parents, family .... it seemed to be a regular topic :p
I am pleased to say that at 3.5 and finally toilet trained, the poo conversations are at an end (or at least only a 'once in a blue moon') .... but for new mums - Get Used To It
Anyway - as you were.

thanks ladies for your responses! you have put my mind at ease :)
Katies mum - I know what you mean! When i was pregnant, my 'already mothers' friends would discuss all sorts of lovely topics and i would be "wow - some thing are better left unsaid" and now im joining in talking about poop, breasts, milk, sex life (none existent), vomit, boogie removal techniques...etc...haha!! and there are so many things that i said i wouldnt dare do that i have (silly things like BF in public, being pooped/peed on etc)
AAaahhh how motherhood changes you :)

Since we're talking about poo....
DS's were like you described until two days after he first ate solids.
The first bit was like a jellybean "cork"... once that was out the way, we had peanut butter, then came the curdled milk, and finally, the liquid... all in one single bowel motion.
Oh the joys!
