View Full Version : New to this.......Health Cover
hi there
am new to this forum and am hoping to move to Perth next year when our house in UK is sold and we have saved some more money (to cover the house price rise in WA!!!)
We may put off trying for another baby until we get to Australia but as will possibly be having a second c-section, am concerened about the cover if we were to go private. there is a 12 month waiting period when you take the cover out, so does that mean, if i got pregnant after 3/4 months, teh birth would be covered, but the pregnancy related costs like consultants appts and scans and checks would not??? is that right?
If i had to wait for 12 months to be fully covered for all scans, appts etc then my ds now would be nearly 5 before we had another baby and i didnt want such a long gap.
I suppose i could go medicare for that and private birth.......
How does it all work????
I am keen to go private for a very different birthing experience and to feel a bit more in control. Didn't feel this at all in UK!!!!!!!!
hope you can help

Hello
I have private health insurance with HBF. I didn't get the maternity cover as I found that it just wasn't worth paying for.
I had my baby at King Edward Memorial and they are a public hospital. I had no problems. I had an emergency c-section and my daughter was in the Special Care Nursery for 1 month ( she was born 31w5d).
I don't see the difference really in public or private patient care. I ended up in my own room and the doctors did a fantastic job.
If you want to look up some private health places try these.

There are heaps more but that should give you some idea. Hope it helps..

I just wanted to say that i have been with three different private health centre's.
And i have found that HIF seems to be working the best for us..
But everyone is different, good luck with whatever you do!
We are with SGIO for our health cover and have had no problems with them. Private health insurance doesn't cover your pre-natal appoinments etc, only the hospital stay and private OB costs associated with this. There is almost always a gap owing to your OB which is out of pocket to you. Some may be claimed back on medicare. As you are coming from the UK I don't know about coverage with medicare etc.
You can get pregnant during the 12month waiting period as long as the due date is after the waiting period is over. I have had a baby public and one private. And I much preferred private. But I love continuity of care etc, I didn't get that in the public system. I certainly felt more in control and informed with my own OB to ask questions and develop a relationship with.
However some people love the public system and the birthing units etc. which povide excellent midwife led care. It is a really personal choice i guess.
Hope this helps, good luck with your decision and move to Perth :D
