Hi there,

I had that done with my first. I had 3 lots of gel applied over a course of 2 days i think...and nothing worked. So my Ob decided to go with the balloon.

As soon as he put the balloon in, i started contracting straight away! I had it put in about 7pm and had DS1 the next day at midday. The pains weren't bad enough that i couldn't sleep through them. The next morning at 9am, the dr examined me and the balloon just fell right out, as i had dilated even more than expected. Then they put the drip in at about 9.30am, to complete the induction.

It's very uncomfortable when they insert it...so try to relax as best you can. The rest is just as if you were birthing normally...normal pains..you can stand and move around etc.

HTH.

My hypnobirthing practitioner (who I'm now friends with) developed pre-eclampysia (sp) and she was induced with the water balloon and had a great labour.

I think it might be called a foley's catheter or something?

It basically opens up your cervix to 3cm or so I believe and then hopefully the cervix takes over on its own (and the balloon then falls out)

I am having a vbac and I've been told that if it was for some reaosn necessary to induce, then my hospital uses the balloon (won't use synto in a vbac)

Good luck for tomorrow!!

I was induced just over 2 weeks ago with the foleys catheter (balloon thing!)

It is quite uncomfortable ... but certainly doable ..

I had mine inserted the night before they were going to put the drip in (i had low fluid levels so they couldnt use the gel)... and as i got up to walk to maternity (about 1hour later) it fell out ... so definately worked in the dialating sense ... but it didnt start contractions or anything for me and i had to have the drip the next morning ...

so in short it worked in dialating my cervix quite quickly .. (wasnt dialated AT ALL before they inserted it) but didnt start the labour

Hope that mumbo jumbo helped :)
