View Full Version : Catching 'the gay?'
has anybody ever come across people who are weird about their children being around gay people. My friend found out my male gay friend babysits for me sometimes and she got really uncomfortable. she asked me if I was sure he was safe.
safe from... catching 'the gay'?
I am surrounded by dumb rednecks, and most of my friends are gay or lesbian....and the dumb rednecks don't like me "telling the children".
Apparently if you don't tell your kids they won't go get gay.
People are freaks.

i couldnt give 2 hoots if coop is gay, whatever floats his boat, i will be happy for him regardless. some people talk bout it like its a contagious disease and its so so wrong. some gays are just nasty but then there are others out there who will drop everything to help you out and i know that for a fact.

Yeah there are some people who are still weirded out by the idea that their kids may 'catch' gay ... It seriously makes me laugh ...
Then you get the ones who assume because a guy is gay it would make them 'into' kids ... THAT peeves me to no end ... Yeah being gay automatically makes you a pedophile ... NOT :banghead:
My kids have no hope anyhows ... We have loads of friends & family who are openly gay ... So yeah they are sooo gonna 'catch' gay :sleeping:

Some people are just so ignorant and close minded. Its pathetic.
My BIL thought like this and he thought all gay guys were child molestors and now my 22 year old nephew (his son) is gay and he knows better now.
I haven't heard that one - hilariousness!
What I have heard is so many men don't want to be around gay men because they might "crack onto them":laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:
As if a gay man would want to crack onto a bigotted homophobe!
But lesbians can be 'hot' to them

we went to a wedding when DS was about 8 months. He had his soft doll with him. One of the people told me that I should be careful because if I let him play with dolls he will 'go gay'. ummm, seriously....

My friends and I were out for my birthday one year doing a pub crawl in Newtown.
We ventured into one of the gay pubs and when we left, my friend Darren (straight and not homophobic) was offended that a guy didn't try and chat him up

 I was told I wouldn't know what could happen, because DS likes the olour pink, as FIL know some "fruity people who like pink".

I have never heard an adult say that.
In fact I don't think I've heard it at all since about grade three, which was almost 20 years ago.
I wonder if they think they can catch stupid..
Or if they protect their daughter from playing with boys o they don't catch male.

Yeah some people are weird but thankfully, no one in my family of circle of friends.
I have many gay and lesbian friends and have even been looking for books on gay families for my children to read when they are older.

DH said the same thing about his son one day, if he's gay and he's happy so be it. DH said it would shock him, but he's be good.
I have 2 gay friends that are long term partners and they are great! I take them shopping because they are brutally honest about what looks good on you and you know they are not perving on you!
I can't believe people think you can "catch" gay??? What next?
she asked me if I was sure he was safe.
sigh. unfortunately to many people being gay and being a child molester seem to be the same thing, that you can't be one without the other. it's a very 1950's attitude that never seemed to die out. :(
this film kinda explains it, it was an "educationl" film in it's time.

I don't know if it's the education department, but most of my gay/lesbian friends are either teachers (3 male couples and 4 female couples) or childcare directors (2 female couples).
Am I worried my child will "turn gay"? Well, in all honesty, if she's that way inclined then she's that way inclined and introducing her to gay and lesbian couples won't change who she is, but it might make it easier for her to talk to me about it later in life, and it might make it easier for her to feel accepted.

Oh no! My mum is a lesbian does that mean that my kids will catch gay because she see's them once a week
Even if they did turn out to be gay i am their mother, i love them unconditionally.
When I was pregnant and people asked what gender I wanted, [why do they ask that??], I'd say "I want a boy or a lesbian". Seriously, I just hate Barbie dolls.
How can I get Esme to catch gay?? Are there special books I could buy her? If I refuse to let her wear pink and buy her ugly shoes will she grow up to be a lesbian? :p

I do not hate homophobes, I pity them, they are missing out.
What a stupid thing for your friend to think.
My DP and I have also talked about it and we don't give a rats behind if they are gay straight or just not interested in anyone at all.
I have good friends that are gay.
In that line of thinking a LOT of children are going to "catch gay" from their parents  dumb****s!

Oh my god NO!
I wouldn't care if my son turned out gay...Id have a shopping buddy . I asked DF and he said he would have no problem with a gay man looking after Lucas and he said the only thing he would be disappointed about if Lucas was gay is that we wouldn't get grandkids :p.
I cannot believe some people are so shallow minded!! Its 2009 people!

We lived with friends of mine who were gay - DD and I.
In that house there was me, DD, a straight male (who was possibly bisexual?), and 2 gay males in a relationship together.
Our house was always filled with gay guys and straight girls.
DD knew that 2 of them were together - she knew they were boyfriends who loved each other.
I'm quite glad she had that experience... it means she's been exposed to homosexuality young, and it was introduced to her as a normal, natural thing... it's not something strange she discovers later in life and is shocked to find out when all she's ever known is heterosexual couples.

I'm a preschool teacher I remember one stroy time experience when I was showing large picturres of families and we were talking about different families I got to one where it looked like there was two mums as there was two women the same age so I went with that, one kid said "two mums?" I said yep and that was it all the rest of the class didn't question it all or care :-)
I hope I didn't make all my kids catch the gay lol
it's such a child statement though "catch the gay" when my sister was about 8 a gay couple walked past us on the street and she said " I hope I don't get lesbianed when I grow up" I couldn't believe she said as we had close family friends who were gay and my dh and I were room mates with a gay family friend that she adored

Lol and there isn't any anti vitals for stupid
My MIL told my Mum that it was disgusting that my sister allowed her son (my nephew) to paint his finger nails as she had known a women who was also silly enough to allow it and it made her son gay. Yes it's true, he turned gay from painting his nails and having a doll  I guess there really is no hope for my son as he has painted nails, a doll, wears my high heels & lipstick, loves The Fairies etc etc he is gunna 'catch the gay' for sure *sigh*
PS SSP that comment your FIL made about 'fruity people' cracked me up, I've not heard that term for gay people before. When will people learn???

Thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard lol we grew up with gay aunty's and uncle's and my sister is gay, oh maybe she caught it off one of my aunty's lol what a joke. If anything growing up around gay people has made me a better person in that its taught me to be open mined and not to judge people just because they are different or have different preferences to me, would you judge someone for liking jam sandwiches and not peanut butter ones?
What I have heard is so many men don't want to be around gay men because they might "crack onto them"
As if a gay man would want to crack onto a bigotted homophobe!
DH did have a gay friend kiss him once, he said it was quite unexpected and he just politely explained that he wasn't interested. But you're right, guys are paranoid!
I wonder if they think they can catch stupid..
:laughing:Yeah, I'd be far more worried about letting your baby hang out with the friend that made this comment, as I think that sort of stupid is definitely catching. So many kids grow up to believe those sorts of prejudices because they hear it from family or friends, it's lovely to know your baby wont :)

I dont think some peoples problem is gay people turning their children gay I think they confuse homosexuals with child sex offenders.
I have a gay cousin and a gay uncle my aunt wouldn't let my uncle see her kids (incase he did something) funny thing is her son is a gay as can be  (even though he had nothing to do with my uncle)
My ex wont let my ds stay with my uncle as he thinks a gay person and a sex offender are 1 in the same :hissy::shame: Stupid I know, I wont let ds stay with my uncle cos he has $$$ art, glass tables and things in general and no idea of child safty.
Some people are just narrow minded and judgmental.
My parents had no such problems with my uncle I stayed over heaps as I got older(I'm not gay lol) I like his partner way more than my aunty and if I could choose relos he would be one for sure.

Thats really sad if people associate gay people with sex offenders. It makes me really angry actually! There sexual preference is for those of the same sex not children! Can people really be that narrow minded and brain dead to think such things!!!

I dont think people outright think that but I think some people in the back of their mind think that I know of a few people who have said that.
I am with you a gay person is attracted to another gay person (of the same sex) not a child nor narrow minded straight person the mind boggles at some people, how illogical and stupid.
I don't think your friend was worried so much about "catchin the gay" lol Some people are just a little unexposed to this sort of thing. MOST of my male friends are gay and I would have no problem leaving my DS with them but that's because I know them. To be honest, I would think twice about having a male (gay or not) look after DS if I didn't know them well. I think there is a bit of a public hysteria when it comes to homosexuality - especially gay men - and children. A lot of media coverage is given to male pedophiles mollesting young boys. I think if people don't have gay friends, they may put them all in the same basket, sadly :(

I must remember to tell one of my lesbian friends about this... she wears the best shoes I've ever seen, makeup, and gorgeous clothes, and makes 90% of the straight women I know look more 'stereotypically' lesbian than she is....
Bad news... you may get a lesbian daughter who LOVES Barbie dolls .....

Oh cr@p DD is doomed.... :p I am pretty certain DD would think it is strange for a girl and guy to kiss!
I have always had a tendency towards women, with my first steady gf at 16 (that reminds me I must ask mum where I caught it from.... :p).... and haven't been out with a guy since ex, but have seen a couple of girls....
My sister also has a long term partner of the same sex.... and most of my friends are gay.... or bi.....
SPC.... I'm kinda with you on this one.....Life would be so much easier in the teen years if P likes girls.... no chance of unplanned pregnancies at least! :p Actually I have 3 sisters, mum had no issues as teens with my and my next youngest sis (also gay) whereby she has had nothing but trouble with the younger two who have always been boy crazy.... so going on that record bring on "the gay"....
Oh and SPC... I love my heels too.... :p

Love it.... Yep take it from me, the new era of lesbians are very style conscious......it's exhausting really.... I'm too old to keep up with all that jazz!
I've come across it often. Our best friend is gay and DS just adores him. I've even seen another friend cringe when his Uncle Pete called him cute. Yes because if you're a man and gay you like little boys:rolleyes:. My old housemates and friends of are all gay and I spend quite a bit of time with them and I get the same thing. Be careful you don't want DS to think that's normal. No not at all:rolleyes:.
I find that people aren't concerned about my son 'catching gay' but more concerned that by being around it he's going to think it's acceptable. I'd much prefer my son be around a bunch of flamboyant queens then homophobic morons that's for sure!
