Is it when they're 6? or 7? or is it 15? LOL

Just curious, as I can't remember from my own childhood what age we were when Mum stopped having to say "Go to bed" or whatever. Does anyone know? Or do some kids start taking themselves to bed at an early age?

Sorry, weird question, I know. I'm just curious to know when I'll stop being so concerned about what time DS goes to bed. :o

Lol

I remember asking to go to bed when I was maybe about 5? So from a youngish age I was taking myself to bed.. but the funny thing is I would ask if I could go to bed yet!!! Am yet to hear another child do that

Forgot to say... we still have to tell DSS to go to bed... and he is 9.5.. and yes kicks up a stink sometimes about it.. Kids hey, who would want em? ;) jokes :p

 Can you come and have a chat to DS?? :D I'd love it if he started doing that!

Although I shouldn't complain, last night DS did initiate things. At about 8:15pm, after he had showered and I put his pj's on, he said "Time for stories and milk?" :goodvibes: He was fast asleep on the boob by 8:30pm.

My little man is much like me when I was a toddler - he actually asks ME if he can go to bed when he's tired.

His usual bed time is around 7 (he is a big sleeper - needs a good 11-12 hours for him to not be grumpy the next day) and last weekend I was going to let him stay up....

He was asleep on the lounge by 7.15  was sooooooooo cute!

I remember though, as I got older, I still had a set "bed time" but I always wanted to stay up so I think around maybe 12 or so I could go to bed when I wanted to or I would've been up all night :p

My DD1 puts herself to bed most nights and she is nearly 5, some nights she argues but she is pretty good. But she always says even tho she in bed she cant go to sleep till ive given her a kiss lol. (which i always do several times)

My DD1 occasionally asks to go to bed, but it's usually pretty close to her normal bedtime. The joys of having a consistent routine is that she just knows when it's getting close to bed time.

DS is 8.5 and while he will go to bed when he's told to, he still likes to be tucked in. I don't expect to have to stop the "tucking in" ritual until the teenage years.

And I fully expect to still have to be telling him to go to bed when he's a teenager too!

It depends very much on the child.

My 10yo stayed up late a couple nights, and discovered how difficult the next day was, and came to her own conclusion that she prefers to go to bed at a reasonable hour. She chooses when to go to bed most nights, but occasionally loses track of time and responds well to a reminder. :cloud9:

My 13yo, on the other hand, has to be sent to bed every night, and if not monitored, will get up again after everyone has gone to bed. I've lost track of the number of times I've gotten up to visit the bathroom around 2am or 3am, only to discover Miss13 all dressed and ready for school.

  Does she sleep walk? Either that or she's mighty keen!

I was always happy to go to bed from the time I could read on my own. The big stink was about 'lights out'. My sister and I both had secret torches so we could read under the covers

I do remember fights about that from a young age.

I always loved going to bed at night and still do. I was never a napper though. I remember fighting it at 3yo kindy and getting in trouble for keeping the others up. My DS is shaping up to be exactly the same I think.

My kids are almost 5 ad 7. Bed time is still usually an issues coz they want to stay up. Once they are in bed and me and my husband have both given them a kiss and cuddle, put on some relaxing music and lit a candle for them, they *usually* stay in bed, but they go thru phases where they just keep coming out!

If we didn't 'put' them to bed they would seriously stay up as long as possible, even if they are literally falling asleep. On hols with cousins (who go to bed whenever they want) they will still be up at 1am trying to stay awake!

I was the same tho, hated how mum and dad got to stay up later than me :)

Still have to argue with my 10 year old to go to bed. "Can I have 5 minutes?' blah blah every night, the answer is *always* no.

My youngest is nearly 3...he doesn't ask to go to bed yet..he falls asleep on the couch..but refuses to go to bed untill he's fully asleep.

Miss 4.5 always asks to go to bed at about 6.30-7pm.
Miss 8 has also always asked to go to bed...usually at 8pm now she's older...even at a young age I never had a prob with her and bedtime.
Master 10 knows his bedtime is 8.30pm..there is never an argument with any of them :)

No, she just decides that she cannot sleep, and gets up. Then she tries to offset the bad of being out of bed at night with the good of being all prepared and ready for school.

There have been days where, she's been going strong until abot 30 minutes before it is time to leave, at which point she falls asleep on the couch. Sometimes I've let her have the day off, sometimes I woke her and took her anyway. Neither option did much good. Now there is the blanket rule of: not allowed up before 5am.

My eldest will be 5 next month and we still have to put her to bed. She loves when me and Grant come in and tuck her in. Occasionally she might put herself to bed but she has to be pretty tired to do that.

I've never willingly gone to bed, I used to get up again after they had gone to bed.

It's only been the last 18 months that they have gone to bed at 8:30 (old person bedtime:p) and left me to my own devise which resulted in 3am bedtimes for months until I couldn't function anymore.:o

Now I just hang about enjoying the peice and quiet until I get tired and go to bed at the reasonable time of 11:30.
