View Full Version : Ava's Little Red Botty
The challenges of being a first-time mummy....so different from corporate life...it;s wonderful.
My current obstacle: My precious possum, Ava, (3.5 weeks) has developed a very persistent bout of nappy rash. It looks so sore. So far I have been recommended washing her with warm water, drying thoroughly and applying a zinc based cream, however, it still isn't clearing.
I've also been giving her lots of 'air-time' sans nappy.
I have heard paw paw ointment is good, although others have recommended over-the-counter ointments. Any suggestions would be great....

Hey there
I have always used Vaseline on bub, both as a barrier, and as a sooth for nappy rash. It works a treat, have never needed to use any of the commercial stuff on offer. It is quite a bargain, cos Vaseline is sooooo cheap compared to these products and a tub lasts for ages.
Oh, and another thing. We use Alpha Keri bath oil for bub and as well as keeping the dry skin at bay, it helps to give a lovely (baby) soft bottom.
:)
I love paw paw ointment and swear by it for nappy rash and any other skin problem.

Thrush can quite often be mistaken by nappy rash, I would take her to your GP if the nappy rash doesn't start to clear in a day or 2 with creams.

Hi there
If the gold in a tube 'Desitin' (zinc based) doesn't work - then I'm with Kassiasmum. Take her to your GP as it could very well be thrush and it won't go away unless you use an antifungal cream on it.
Good luck

I use Sudocream at the moment but have Papaw ointment on hand just in case. Its really good for clearing up nappy rash as well as cuts and scrapes. If it doesn't clear up I'd do as others suggested and get her checked for thrush.
Im with Nicole on this one. I use vaseline on my dd and I find it fantastic!!! My daughter is 5 months old and has never suffered from nappy rash, so I am more than happy to continue using good old valesine on her little bot!
Thanks so much for all your suggestions/advice etc.
Ava's little red botty isn't so red anymore....I was also recommended to cleanse with sorbolene cream and water and then apply Bepathen cream (it has cleared up beautifully).
Glad to hear that your bubs bum is better :)
Just thought I'd add my two bobs worth and say that I found Lucas's Paw Paw ointment to be FANTASTIC!
My DS got his first bout of nappy rash at 9 months and I went to the chemist who sold me Daktarin cream and a pot of zinc based nappy paste. After a week of using them neither had worked and the rash seemed to be spreading. My Mother in Law bought me the Paw Paw ointment to try and within 2 days the rash was pretty much gone :D
