View Full Version : Spag Bol for Bubs
Can anyone share with me their recipe for spag bol that they gave their bubs? My little boy (9months) has eaten it out of a jar but I am not sure what's ok to put in it if I make my own.
Thanks heaps if anyone is able to help me out!

Off the top of my head...this is what I used to make DD when she was that age. Quantities are very approximate, I cook by feel :)
About 150g of fine mince
tiny bit of finely diced onion or garlic
canned crushed tomatos (enough to make it the consistency you want)
1/2 tsp tomato paste
finely grated carrot or zucchini
handful of risoni or other small pasta
Just fry up the onions and mince in some olive oil. Add all the other ingredients (I would pre cook the pasta in water first and drain before adding).
You can also run a hand blender through the meat mixture if you want a smoother texture (before adding pasta).
This also freezes well. :)

Hi Tania!!
I make the world's best spag bol (or so I've been told!! :p ) but you'd need to leave some of the ingredients out for bubbas.
So you've inspired me to give a baby recipe a go!! Claire might have to give it a trial run for me later in the week!
(Make up your own quantities to taste, although if you want an idea of quantities PM me)
Beef mince
Finely grated onion
Finely grated carrot
Finely grated zucchini
A tin of tomatoes (I go for the already diced ones)
A small tin of tomato paste (I use the Coles Farmland one - it is exactly the right size & cheap!!)
Finely chopped fresh flat leaf (or italian) parsley
Thick spaghetti broken into smal pieces (or other pasta suitable for your child, such as penne or spirals or even bow ties!)
(If you want a bit more texture, you could finely dice the veggies instead)
(Also, I'm not sure when you can start giving babies mushrooms?? I'd normally add plenty of mushrooms to ours)
(For variety you can use different types of mince. Lamb mince works well, or even chicken mince)
Brown the mince in a small amount of olive oil
Add the onion
Add the tomatoes & cook until the juice from the tomatoes has reduced
Add the tomato paste
Reduce heat & simmer for approx 10 mins (depending upon quantity - you're looking for the meat to be well cooked & the sauce to have a richer, darker appearance)
Add the remaining vegetables
Cover & simmer on a low heat
After the bolognaise has been simmering for about 10 mins, start cooking the pasta - don't add oil to the water when cooking the pasta as this stops the sauce sticking well to the pasta
Before serving, stir in the parsley & serve the sauce mixed with the pasta & topped with grated tasty cheese (for kiddies - adults might want some parmesan)
It might seem as though you're cooking the sauce for a long time, but trust me - this is the secret to the best bolognaise!

:smiliedance: Thanks tania i was thinking this today! Ill have to try out the recipies:)
Thanks heaps everyone. I will be giving these a go. Our pasta sauce has lots of mushies in it too Fi - I wasn't sure about that either! We also have chilli and herbs and stuff, lots of things that sounded a bit dicey to me.
I'll give the recipes a go - might start tomorrow.
Thanks again.

My secret Spag Bol recipe uses tomato soup (heinz). Is this OK for bub?
