Hi, my 3yo is going through a stage and I am not sure what to do.

Previously, (since he was 2 until he nearly turned 3) he would wake at about 6.45, sleep arvo from 1.30-4.00 then bed by 7.30 and asleep by 8pm

Now he is waking at 6.00, sleep around 2-4, then is taking AGES to get to sleep at night!!! Its driving me crazy. Nothing has changed, I will do the same routine (books before bed, brush teeth etc) and then I will be lucky if I can get him into bed at 7.30/8.00, but often he will talk, whinge, and call out for me until he falls asleep around 9.00/9.30!

I thought perhaps he is going to not need his day sleep, so I tried it on sunday, and he has been so overtired ever since. So he really needs some sleep in the day..

Please can anyone tell me what I should be doing to get him to bed at the right time?? He has been more active (he got a bike for his b'day) so if anything he should be exhausted!

So it sounds like your DS is going through that tricky stage where they kinda do but don't really need the day sleep any more.
:hugs: He will transition.
My DS was the same at 3(now 3.5). When I first stopped putting him down for a day sleep, he was pretty tired (and cranky) late afternoon but he would go to bed earlier, and easier without the sleeps. To begin with I'd just put him down in the the day every few days instead and eventually drop it all together and he has slowly gotten used to it.

Thanks Mitake and a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to your beautiful baby :hugs:

Do you or anyone know what is the age to start taking them off the day sleeps? I am just worried about doing it, because when he didn't have a sleep on Sunday he has been really irritable since.

Thanks for the congrats:)

I don't think there is a set age to stop the naps it depends on the child.

Hard because they don't just drop it without the crankiness. It did take a little while for my DS to get used to it.
Maybe you could trial it for a fortnight, still letting him nap ever few days to catch up.
It really helped mt DS's night time sleep.
Hope the same happens for you:goodvibes:

I had to start cutting out DS' naps at 2y4m (3 months ago) because he wouldn't go to bed before 10:30pm. It happened by accident one day and I realised that he could cope without a nap. Now he sleeps from around 7pm to 7am each night, sometimes he'll even sleep 13 hours.

Oh yeah, and he gets a bit mental at the end of the day but he's out like a light at bedtime when I BF him to sleep at 7pm (sometimes 6:30). I can cope with the crankiness if I know he'll be asleep early.
